  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

2 More Canon CN Lenses

I would say that FAIL is a major understatement. Really disappointed by that 14mm. :(

Aren't these just rehoused stills with a better coating? Not a complete redesign?

Looks like they might find it tough against Zeiss 15mm T2.9 and new 135mm T2.1....

and why the hell wouldn't they focus on a 18mm f1.4/1.5, 35mm f1.4/1.5, and a 100mm f1.4/1.5?!?! Wouldn't that make most sense for their current cine prime set?

Oh man, this is not even a let down anymore. This is just plain ridiculous.

Too bad the RED primes are waving good bye.

wish they would bring them back but smaller and lighter. Similar to Ultra Prime and Super Speeds. Now that would be awesome.

I wonder how much would Full frame 18mm T1.5 Cost and Weight??

why does a cine lens need to cover FF? The standard is s35. FF is a DSLR thing but cool to have if you can. It would be the most expensive to manufacture for sure. If they did a s35 18mm t1.5, it would sell like crazy to those who can't afford the high end cine glass like master primes, leicas, cookes, etc. A t1.5 ff lens would just be a huge bonus.

Amen!

I wouldn't scoff at these lenses right now. Both Canon and Zeiss are making glass that cover full frame Mysterium X and Dragon. To me these are viable options and perform pretty darn well for their price versus performance ratio. Not to mention they are rather compact as well.

I agree that a CN-E 14mm T3.1 is not "ideal" however. It will have a very hard time competing against the Zeiss Compact Prime CP.2 15mm T2.9 on every performance level.

The Canon CN-E use the same optical elements as their still FF35 counter parts (same deal for Zeiss). However, their internal mechanics, housings, and lens coatings are different. One thing I noticed when comparing the CN-E 85mm T1.3 version against the 85mm f/1.2L for instance is that the highlight roll off seemed more "contained" and has a smoother feel to it. More suitable for cinema use in my opinion. I only have experience with the CN-E 24mm T1.5, 50mm T1.3, and 85mm T1.3. I can say from a resolving and color reproduction standpoint I like what I see.

18mm is a problem though. There is a real lack of speedier 18mm glass in the still world. It's common for us who work with cinema glass, but for whatever reason 18mm never really sold well in FF35 land. There were a few 18mm f/3.5 lenses, one of which was transformed into the Zeiss CP.2 version. Nikon even made/makes an 18mm f/2.8, but it's not the most popular girl at the ball. Last year Nikon published a patent for an 18mm f/1.4 design (as well as a 20mm f/1.4). I'm a little shocked Nikon isn't getting into the cinema prime game. I'm a little more shocked that Sigma hasn't made a move either.

Canon hasn't mentioned a peep about an 18mm design however. Which still is very odd considering the size and performance of that old Canon K35 18mm T1.5. If they can somehow capture that lightning in a bottle with some modern coatings and newer elements we would all be happy. It makes me think that the design was lost when Alexandria burned down.

There is a new 35mm design on the way. It hasn't been announced. Canon at one point explored a 35mm f/1.2 design. I have been told that a CN-E 35mm "is on the way", but they made no comment regarding a transmission value. T1.3 or T1.5 and that would be solid.

From what I have learned the CN-E prototypes are made by hand by a very small team and have to be deconstructed before mass market production. They have been doing a lot of tinkering with the internal focusing mechanics to get these lenses to work well for motion picture use. I am not a fan of this "trickle" release mindset though.

I imagine the next CN-E primes after the 14mm and 135mm will be a 35mm, 100mm Macro, and one of their super telephoto lenses (likely the 200mm f/2 or 300mm f/2.8).

also, don't let the numbers fool you. 14mm T/3.1 is less than half a stop from a 15mm T/2.9... The half stop between a T/2.8 and T/4 I think is a T/3.3.

Canon lenses

I don't get Canon's lens folks. They are being begged for some really basic lenses to be improved like the 50 1.4 and 35 1.4 which are very long-in-the-tooth and for an IS 24-70. Most of their primes are so neglected that the new zooms out-perform them. Instead they are releasing a $16,000 200-400 mm zoom.

On the Cine front why don't they look in their own archives and start where they left-off with k35s.

They are apparently working on a 50mm 1.4 that is optically stabilized.

Agreed. My only question is if the K35s have sufficient coverage for the 4K mode on Canon's 1DC, which is between S35 and FF size - 1.3 crop from FF size I think?

Why?
Lets wait for Dragon and other bigger sensor cameras to come.
