  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

1st X......

EPIC-X question:

I know things change, however, RED originally said that when EPIC ships, it would be feature complete (not that it wouldn't still be upgradeable via firmware, just that it would have all the basic features that were planned (both still and video - DSMC). The idea was that EPIC would not be released like the RED ONE as a work in progress.

Then the tragedy in Japan happened and, as a result, the EPIC-M program was launched, which for many reasons occurred similar to the RED ONE program. The Cameras started shipping and significant features got added (and still are being implemented) every week.

This is not a problem at all, and I applaud RED for their outstanding work and for getting the Cameras out ASAP.

I'm just curious if the EPIC-X program means that the Cameras will be somewhat feature complete (playback, programmable rack focus, DSMC still features (shoot stills, mark stills while shooting video, etc.) or is the plan now that EPIC-X will also add these previously announced features via firmware over time?

Again, this is more of a question out of curiosity. We are extremely happy RED EPIC-M customers. However RED continues the program is fine with me. Just curious what the EPIC-X plan moving forward is.

Epic-M and Epic-X are the same camera, with same firmware. If you own an Epic-M, then you already know what the Epic-X will be like.

My understanding is that additional features (stills mode, playback) are being added rapidly, but that the baseline feature-set (ie - enough to shoot a feature with) is all there and working well. As an M customer, you'll have a more informed opinion on that I'm sure.

Yes, I'm aware of that. That's not what I'm asking.

I'm wondering if EPIC-X (which also means EPIC-M) will have all of the DSMC features upon shipping (now/very soon) or will it also have these features updated over the next few months (which is my guess).

No worries either way - just like to get an idea on the timeline of these features.

Well, considering that Epic-X is actually shipping and you haven't received a firmware update for your M to enable said features... I think the answer is fairly obvious, yeah? My personal un-informed guess is that Red will have as much enabled as soon as is humanly possible.

The bulk of my work is stills, but I'm not letting the lack of many Still features hold back my M order. I'll just use the same workflow I apply to R1 stills. Good enough for now with even better on the horizon.

I'm wondering if its possible for the person in charged of the Epic X delivery Notification to Post the numbers of orders (Quantity) that have been fulfilled through out the week, or maybe the end of the week or month. For those of us that are on Stage 3 and stage 4 like me to give us and insight and we can Guesstimate around when it will be possible for us to be able to get our Epic X's. I personally completely understand if you guys don't feel comfortable for any reason or other providing this information. On the other Hand it will help us a great deal in the decision making department for those of us who have pending projects for the next 6 months ahead. Thank you very much for everything RED is doing.

You can try to guesstimate with these lists. Keep in mind that production is supposed to ramp up quicker than it did with the Red One.

Howdy RED,

I assume you don't wanna give any specifics about how many E X's you really build per day, and everybody tries to 'guesstimate' where we are at, especially since the number changes on a weekly scale if not faster, just like Curran mentioned.

But in order to avoid the mails you want to be avoided, like 'when is mine ready...' etc., it would help to get a rough number.
Anything that helps those needing to carefully forecast their expenses.
I guess I am not the only one who can't shell out the amount from one day to another.
It makes a big difference if we are talking October, November or December.

Epic-X orders are moving quickly... My buddy Andrew got his email 5 days ago. He is number 127. I just got my email yesterday and I'm 363... They will be at Stage 3 in no time at all...

I'm more excited than the Red One days...

#378 here. Got my email a few days ago. Can't wait to get it! Fingers crossed the Canon mount and Smart Side Handle aren't far behind, as I need both to be truly independent.... don't own any PL glass any more.

First Epic-X in Japan!

Cheers from Tokyo,

Paul :)

...and it's shipped! Got Fedex notice just now.

#378, original Red One delivered on Valentine's Day 2008.

Cheers from Tokyo,

Paul :)

Congrats Paul!!

John Cordell just picked up his Epic-X moments ago...

heh heh heh.. I don't know who is happier in this photo... John for receiving the first X..... or Brent for finally handing over the first X. :)

I know one thing for sure, that kid aint happy. He looks downright angry.

This is kind of brutal ;in that its like standing in a very long line and seeing those that have come from the front of the line with their cameras in hand and you don't even see the front of the line, or your wondering if they will be out of cameras when you get there. All exciting, and Reduser is like the guy standing next to you in the line and you ask questions of the folks around you and make new friends.
Congrats Corrado.
