  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

1st X......

Congrats John!

Since I had the chance to shoot several days with an EPIC M, I was incredibly impresst how this camera flatters shadows and lights and I realy can't wait anymore. Every day without an EPIC is a lost day (sorry for that my beloved RED 222...you are still a great camera and the last 4 years I never had ANY problems with you)

After RED1, EPIC X will again revolutionize the filmbusiness, not as much for the big player, they always had the money for huge teams, technique and whatever they need, but for small companies: In talented hands EPIC gives you the ability to shoot big screen cinema even for clients with small budgets. And that's a good argument to generate new business. So, let the show begin as fast as possible. Need this masterpiece NOW! ;-)

Congratulations John,

I hadn't realized you were the same John Cordell that I worked with Back with Brad and Ludwig and particularly Rick back in the I.E. days.

Good on you!, and best wishes for your future projects,

Steve

Big moment. We all waited so long for it. Congrats RED team you finally made it happen.
I feel like 4 years ago. Everything is coming together now. What a great day.

green with envy :cryin: :cryin: :cryin:

Congrats and enjoy!

That is a good point.

I'm a little lost. Is there a summary of the different models etc ie epic m, epic x, etc. What is the difference? The same with the Scarlet when it comes out. I think this will be my camera.

top plate is completely cosmetic. You will send your M in at your convenience to get your M updated to all the little updated bits in awhile when we start the M update program.

Hey Jarred,

May I ask what the "update bits" are please? I thought it was just cosmetic?

The new cooling system inside, they managed to drop the weight on the Ms before the X production,

but decided to wait until after X launches and they are smooth sailing to begin the changes on the M bodies...

Its in that post about the change in weight

EPIC-M - Pre-production, hand-machined 5K cameras that are something of a collector's item. If you own EPIC-M you are generally considered a big friend of RED. Functionally identical to EPIC-X. A bit under 50% more expensive than EPIC-X. The main advantage is that you can get one tomorrow if you want one, while it's still going to be months before the back orders for EPIC-X are worked out of the system.

EPIC-X - Production EPIC 5K cameras, built on the just-finished assembly line.

EPIC-S - Production detuned EPIC 5K cameras - built on the same assembly line, using the same sensor and form factor, but with a weaker processor that supports lower frame rates. Significantly cheaper than EPIC-X. It's not clear whether these are still going to be produced. If they are, and you can afford roughly $22k+ for a complete setup instead of $45k+ for an EPIC-X, this camera may be a better deal than Scarlet since it provides a future-proof 5K image.

Scarlet - New camera with 3K (2/3) sensor. Scarlet fixed has a fixed zoom lens. Scarlet interchangeable has interchangeable lenses. Scarlet fixed will be by far the cheapest package. Working package will cost about $6k + media cost. Unfortunately, media is pretty expensive and so the camera will wind up being close to $10k out the door.

Hope that helps anyone who's still confused.

Don't think anyone needs to worry about whether S will or will not be produced rather when..
