  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

17-50mm RED Pro Zoom...

Exactly. RED are in this for the long haul. Why wouldn't Jim use his resources to design and produce his own lenses? He certainly has experience with R&D in optics of another kind.
..

Hi,

If something exists thats suitable, it makes sense to adapt it. You don't need to reinvent the wheel!

Less then half the price of the century/canon 17-35 2.8 conversion...
There's a used one on ebay for 10000 right now....

We are gonna see a lot of the current 18-50s for sale from private owners very soon.

Dont worry guys.. full specs will be released shortly.

Thats kinda a good thing- the 18-50 isnt really that bad of a lens. Sure the mechanics are bad and it breaths and it doesnt hold focus all that well. But considering that the old 18-50's will sold for much cheaper, its not that bad of a buy for around $3k (used).

WOW! Now why couldn't the announcement come before Christmas? I woulda told the wife to cancel the golf clubs! That's ok my bday is coming up!

SPECS PLEASE... No rush just asking :001_rolleyes:

So in this case of RED's new 17-50mm zoom lens could be that Jim "bought" from Tamrom that "stock" of glass and

If by "stock" you mean purchasing glass element inventory from them then I'd bet anything against it.

The only thing my logic and limited knowledge allows me to believe is the possible use of a smart idea protected by intellectual property law.

Looks like the budget is going to make me choose between the 18mm RPP and this lens for now. At the moment, I'm more attracted to this new zoom.

Hells yea Jeff!

Sanjin,

I have used that Tamron 17-50 lens and it's a complete piece of crap. Both optically and mechanically. There is no way RED is basing anything off of that turd.

ROFL... but what if the basic optical formula is a solid foundation poorly executed by Tamaron in the interest of profit?

Exactly. RED are in this for the long haul. Why wouldn't Jim use his resources to design and produce his own lenses?

My reasoning also considers improvement upon the original design.

See, I never took a single optics lesson... very upset about that though I had an excellent education. Also, I hear the phrase "defy physics" all the time. Putting both of these together makes me (speculate on top of speculation) that there may not be that many designs out there that limit the use of multiple complex aespherics that would make such aggressive pricing impossible.

But, even (IF) this were true, there would be no Tamaron in this lens at all... only someone's brain fruit. There is amazing talent everywhere. Unfortunately not everyone with great promise finds their best placement... all speculation... and not even relevant so (Jim or other Red team members) feel free to delete this whole off-topic rant... since it is only for selfish self-enlightenment purposes.

And the T1.8 later!!! :dr00l:

Any chance of individual RED pro primes to complement this lens? 85mm and 100mm would make a good range.

We will start selling Individual RPP's in the store tomorrow.

$4250 each for the 25mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm and 100mm.

What I don't understand is how older used RED lenses are going down in price- while other used lenses are holding their used values. I sold my old 300 for around half the purchase price.

That's an interesting point Vladimir. You'll never find a used Master or Ultra prime for half price used, unless the owner has suffered a serious head injury. And it's not like Red lenses are cheap, low quality stuff. Could it be because they're still a comparatively new name in the lens world?

I don't know.
18-50 is sharp enough for the money. It's mechanically clunky, yes. But if you need a cheap run and gun PL lens for when renting A grade glass is not an option, it works just fine. It's in essence a variable prime.
I'm just slightly miffed that we've never got a heads up.....

.....or maybe I'm just a little bitter because I haven't waited for the 17-50.

Lesson learned!

BTW, 17-50 does look very yummy and yes, I will probably buy it. :)

We are giving a months heads up... 30 days longer than Apple! I bought 3 more G4 towers one week before the new G5's were announced. Ouch.
