  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

So it seems that expensive shipping from US is only option. Anyone can hint on cheapest way to do that?
 
Seiki, or their parent company to be more precise, told me in an email that they will launch European 4K models in the near future. They already announced their 4K models at IBC, in the Netherlands, last year.

So I recommend everyone hold your horses -- especially as importing a non-CE certified TV (and US Seikis are not CE-certified) into the EU could result in the TV being returned to the US at your expense. You can also choose to have it destroyed ;)
 
I wonder how near that 'near future' might be. If less then half a year, then probably worth waiting, if not .. choices, choices.

Yeah, I know. I spent a couple of days researching various options for importing a Seiki from the US. Cheapest shipping option was 350 Euros and would have taken a couple of weeks. FedEx quote was 650 Euros. Missing CE certificate was the last nail in that coffin so I figured I'm better off waiting for the EU models.
 
The OPPO 103 seems to like the ferrite core OPPO HDMI cables the best. After the OPPO + Seiki firmware upgrades (audio issues aside) the OPPO has been working fine on 3 Seiki HDMI inputs. The Sony BDP-S790 on the other hand has worked flawlessly from day one using all 3 cables: the Seiki blue cables, the OPPO ferrites, and the Monoprice Redmere cables, going into all three HDMI inputs. I am currently using the Sony and the RedMeres with no issues, other than the audio. The OPPO has been put back in the home theater room. I wouldn't be surprised to see a patch or new firmware to deal with the audio real soon.

Interesting, some of the displays don't have slight flicker in 4k mode? I see a very slight flicker when in 4k 30hz mode, but not in 1080p 60hz mode. I've played video clips in both modes and some scene's have flicker in 4K that don't appear when the set is in 1080p mode. Here's an example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VR-w55zWfJM at 3:45 a few of the rocks flicker quite noticeably, but only in 4k mode. By split the difference do you mean it flickers with one source and not the other?
 
Anyone figure out any calibration settings to improve shadow details? Watching anything with dark scenes mine seems to black out shadows where you can't see much detail in them.

I used an Xrite eye to do the calibration and build a profile. Helped with the colors as well, the reds are a bit off on these monitors by default.

Tried to get the Seiki to play nice with a K5000 for Mac with the latest drivers we could find but no love. Agree with others that the 1080 internal scaling is poor. Seems like this no frills panel is best fed its native 3840 by 2160 with all scaling done upstream. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, as your computer or other outboard device should give you greater control over scaling parameters along with greater processing horsepower. The other key to getting a decent image appears to be adjusting color at the service menu level which requires some patience.

The good news is that I have seen pretty darn good images off the calibrated Seiki at Neil's shop so while its not a grade 1 reference monitor by any means, its much better than the price might suggest.

I got the Seiki running with my older Quadro 4000 Mac card. Coming off the DVI out though the Gefen GTB-HDMI-3DTV setup that seems to make the Seiki happier with the signal level it receives. The Display info reports that it is getting 1920x 2160/30Hz but I made a chart in Photoshop and it fills the screen at the correct size/ aspect ratio.

Ran out and bought a GTX680 card yesterday from Fry's but haven't gotten it to work yet. I'm guessing its the power supply and may have to externally power the card. Any other thoughts on this are appreciated. (Jeff? ;-)
 
Ron, the GTX 680 definetly needs an external power lead directly from the PSU, so that should be relatively easily solved :)

Thoughts? Return the 680 card and get the actual Mac version of the card. Depending on which PC variant you bought, it may be a power supply or other issue. You also need to be on OSX 10.8.3 to fully utilize the GeForce 600 / Kepler series cards.

Yep, it uses two 6 pin connectors directly from the power supply that connect near the back of the card. They make adapters for it so you don't need to buy a new PSU.

As soon as I get my AKA Kona 3G and Hi-5 4K that is what I intend to do. Another slick-n-quick alternative is to use Stacey Spears' excellent calibration disc. He has a new one out, but I used his old disc, "Spears & Munsil HIgh-Definition Benchmark Blu-ray Edition" to get by for the time being. As I mentioned earlier, I noticed some clipping in the red channel. Hopefully it is something that David can tweak in the service menu.

Thanks, Jeff. Yeah, I was looking for instant gratification and went for the 680 after reading several forums claiming the PC version would work with 10.8.3 which is where I'm at.

Def planning on having David out as soon as I get this all dialed in. Aja Hi5-4K and BMD Ultra Studio 4K ordered and just waiting.

Put this together today using the Seiki with 4K out from the Mac and used RCX for the grade (very challenging due to the low light conditions and variable water color)

Hey guys, I finally got my Seiki 50" delivered to me in Dubai (bought from Tiger Direct in the US) and so far it's a great display! I've even managed to force my Mac to output 3840x2160 in HiDPI mode (Retina) which makes this an even better option as a desktop monitor because still images and videos play in native res and everything else is scaled very nicely by the OS. On my MacBook Pro (retina) I'm limited to 17Hz as mentioned by others, but I've ordered a GTX680 Mac Edition for my Mac Pro that will be the primary machine I use this display with.

If you say so =P I Have a macbook pro retina and i specifically disable HiDPI mode as it seams like just a complete waste of the display and screen real-state for me.

A guy on my thread on hardforums said he was able to patch the driver to do 31Hz on a macbook pro retina on mac os:
