  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What would really be the point? I'm not sure why anyone would want to buy RED through B&H because they don't charge significantly below list prices in my experience.

Might as well buy direct from RED.

I think Jim and crew have earned our full wire transfer :).

Of course if RED wants to sell through B&H to avoid having to deal with tiresome logistics problems they don't have the staff to deal with, that might actually make sense ...

Which is the most up to date 'official' reference I know; it must be pretty current because it lists the matte box which was only announced a couple of months ago

Stage 1 = EPIC-M; correct? Price is $28k, you get the brain, modules, EVF etc. etc.

And by the above quote RED are, contrary to the impression given in the above document, selling those to people who are NOT existing RED owners, and they're shipping now.

Stage 4 = EPIC-X brain only, $28k.

The obvious question is, why on earth would anyone go for stage 4, hopefully shipping by end of summer, when they can order EPIC-M now and get more gear sooner for the same price?!

Is there something I'm missing here??

I'm just going by that; I hadn't remotely considered the EPIC-M program so I haven't been paying much attention to the details (apart from looking at some of the footage and going **LUST**! :smile5: )

What Brent said. I don't have time to dig around but the most direct quote I can find (in this thread) would be from an Epic-M owner. This is what I always understood:

That release is almost a year and a half old. At that time Stage 1 included a pre-production Epic-X ... not the machined Epic-M.

The Epic-M was a Epic model not to be conceived for more than a year later.

My favorite line from that Stage 1 release is this ...

Ahhhh OK... sure sounded the same, machined and all that... it IS confusing if you don't keep up with all the threads!

So the $58k program DOES exist, despite not being listed on the document I referenced?

EPIC-M is... same hardware as Tattoo, different price point? Or a 'production' machined version, as opposed to the 'prototype' EPIC-X hardware listed as 'Tattoo / Stage 1', which is why EPIC-M isn't included in the list of stages?

Tattoo was a low run, I don't think they were sold, but more or less used as test cameras. It was during this testing that a bit of length was added to the Epic Body. They then created a few more "tattoo" cameras (again, not sold).

Epic M was conceived later, when RED wanted to get more cameras into testers hands, but with final boards. Epic-X will be the same camera, but run off of the official production line.

It is frustrating that everything changes, except, we all know and expect everything to change. I'm in for the ride, and love shooting on RED when I can or it's warranted. Epic will be my camera of choice* as soon as I can shoot on it.

All cameras are good for some things and others are good for others. An Epic and a Scarlet will be an awesome set to do all sorts of things with. From eng, or long for documentary to full cinema.
 
when can Stage 3 people put a deposit down? I'd imagine that we can sign up for it officially before NAB since you'll be taking orders for Epic-x at NAB?

I really don't want to miss the boat for Stage 3...
 
Thanks for the updates Jim and Jarred (and Brent). This stuff is so much more helpful than you maybe imagine.

One question: Canon and Nikon mounts - still shipping at the same time as the cameras?
 
I know there's few of us but where does stage 3.5 fit in the schedule?

By end of summer as well?

Question! to the RED Team! Any idea on when red.com/store will be updated to accept Deposits on Epic X for those of us that will want to place a deposit and wont be able to do it at NAB 2011?? or will we have to get in contact with RED by phone? or Email?
