  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

$1299 Seiki UHDTV 50" SE50UY04 - Bought it today

ok.... we got the Seiki 4k screen and the Oppo player, but the screen wont accept 4k rez and stays on auto...do we need special cables to get the right signal from the line quadrupler to the screen

No. The OPPO seems to like the ferrite core HDMI cables that came with the unit when used with the Seiki. Now, here's the deal: The OPPO is "supposed" to pass the 4K up-scaled signal from the HDMI 1 output using the Marvell processor. There are some sort of sync/handshake issues going on with the Marvell processed 4K signal out of HDMI 1 into the Seiki. There was a firmware update last week by OPPO to allow the 4K up-scaled signal to by-pass the Marvell processor and HDMI 1 and to allow the signal instead to be output from HDMI 2 (contrary to what the manual says). Connect your OPPO to the internet and make sure you download/install the firmware update. Once you have done that, connect the OPPO HDMI cable to HDMI 2 output on the OPPO. Connect the other end of the OPPO cable to HDMI 1 or 2 of the Seiki (there seem to be issues with HDMI 3 of the Seiki and the OPPO.) Also, on the OPPO remote control, hit the resolution button and make sure it is set to 4K not auto. Hopefully, that will do the trick for you.

As I mentioned earlier, the OPPO service guys told me they had ordered a Seiki panel, so I am sure they will sort it all out.

And, if the OPPO still refuses to work .... get a Sony BDP-S790. It works flawlessly and is half the price of the OPPO.

My friend has his SEIKI up and running. Can also confirm sync issues. He's having them on all 3 HDMI inputs when running 4K from a Sony S790 as well as the AJA Hi5. AJA box isn't as problematic as the Sony BD player, but still occasionally loses sync. Via his PC with an ATI video card (not sure exactly which one, 7950 3GB I think, 4K works fine with no sync drop-outs. I believe his 4K he's pumping via the AJA box is is from the Kona 3G and/ or the 4K KiPro (Quad?). It's all Canon C500 footage. Going to try and stop by and look at his setup tonight...

I've asked some pointed questions on the AMD Developer forums about scaling methods in their drivers. Also, asked about ensuring 10bit (or better) DEEPCOLOR output to the HDMI.

This will all be moot once Redray ships. :)

Hmmm ... strange. My Sony works perfectly on all 3 Seiki HDMI inputs-w-all 3 cables that I have tried: the blue Seiki, the ferrite core OPPO and the Monoprice RedMere. It is hooked up right now-w-the RedMere to HDMI 3. Has he tried feeding the Hi5-4K from a Kona3G? I did update the firmware on the Sony as well as the OPPO. If he hasn't updated the Sony firmware, he may want to give that a try and see if that helps.

I like that you made the 4k versions available for download for 2 dollars, I bought the spring one and it looks sweet on this TV.
 
Hey, that firmware wasn't there the other day... Downloading now, will try to install it in a bit, but I'm on my way out. Already seems promising since it has to do with HDMI timings within the EDID. Awesome, that's like addressing the problem just by the title. :)


Saw my friend's SEIKI and it's running better now. He was using some existing cables because he didn't want to pull all of his stuff out of a rack. We pulled the S790 out anyway and tried with the blue SEIKI cable and no more sync issues on any inputs, same for the PCI w/ ATI GPU. Still a few glitches with the AJA.

I have an AJA 4K converter on order. I figure I may as well so I can use the SEIKI with the Kona 3G and/ or current Rocket card. Not sure how best to set up for both. Don't really want to order two of them, but switching 4 x SDI isn't exactly convenient.
 
The firmware update is an img file. I followed Seiki's instructions and it wouldn't load from my thumb drive. I guess I will try it with another thumb drive. I am "sure" AJA will sort out any issues/glitches-w-the Kona 3G / Hi5-4K & the Seiki. I will ask my friends over at AJA if there is any effective way to split those mini BNC's. I

OK, firmware update instructions on their web site don't work. Put the IMG file on a FAT-32 formatted USB drive and make sure it's the only file on there. Recommend formatting and then copying it over. Plug it into the rear USB port next to the power connector. If the TV doesn't do the update automatically when you plug it in, then turn it on. Go into service menu (menu button, then press 0 four times). You can update the software from there.

So far it seems to have fixed my sync issues with HDMI input 3. <knock wood> But I only did the update about 20 minutes ago. Will keep testing.

Thanks to Mr. Kyte for pointing out the firmware update. Beauty of a first post. ;)


 
Thank Jeff. That did the trick. (I even went so far as to unpack the image file and try that ... FWIW the firmware was written on 4/27/13 ... so its hot off the press.)

Loving this monitor. Not only is it a thrill (for me and my clients) to watch our content in full-4K... Gaming (not that I have the time) is an unbelievably cool perk. 4K screenshots from Bioshock Infinite.

Is this screen not too big to use it as a main screen ? I have a 30" now and think to change for this one but it will be too big no for a desktop screen ?
