  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

$1299 Seiki UHDTV 50" SE50UY04 - Bought it today

There is pro and there is pro. Getting a good TV and calibrating it is best for now. There are screens above $10k that might be more. But if you want 32 inch monitor, then calibrating a Viewsonic, Asus, Sharp, or Dell is out there. One of the guys might be able to point to something better.

I think with seiki, they profess to build cheapest screens, they get from a old oem monitor manufacturer, used to have two fullhd capable CRT monitor by them. Maybe they use the cheapest parts, so because they are uhd30p maxed out, maybe till the parts run out, and then go to some other low end parts with 60p capable. But that might take months to even years. Unfortunately it is what it is, the solution, spend more money to get more.
 
The real solution is for Red to make laservue like laser projector display for $2k-$4k, such that you can take the projector out to project a 3 meter wide screen. Redray not needed. A business will need multiple displays but often only one Redray player.
 
All understood but what I need is a 50" screen and from looking around they are pretty much all 60hz or 120hz and they are all consumer TV's if I want something in the 50" or above range. It's a bit odd that barco has not made a 4k pro screen I think. I have a top grade samsung screen now that I really do not like it's super slow for response time and can not really deal with things like "cut to black" as it then it kind of fades from bright to black. And it got far to much shit in it that I do not want to pay for, I do not need 3D glasses or smart TV, shit speakers, or different refresh moods that makes progressive frames look like soap etc. Also do the internal scaling tools is not really wanted. Better to feed with a correct signal. So I guess I wait, hopefully there will be one coming that does not have all the mumbojumbo stuff in it. But I'm afraid it's like apple that they only do a 60hz versions of these 4k displays.

This has all been covered and debated at length in this thread. It has never been $965 before. Was $1,299 and $1,499.

I know, it's still quite an amazing deal if you want a big computer screen or such.

HDMI 2.0 models coming Spring 2014

Seiki Digital Like most brands, Seiki is working on introducing HDMI 2.0 models as soon as possible. You can expect models to be available around 2nd quarter next year, if not sooner.

I highly recommend waiting until new HDMI 2.0 models release
next spring for compatibility purposes (apply same logic to new Apple product releases as well),
but if you need a UHD set today under $1000 it still has
some usefulness at 2160p 30fps with existing HDMI 1.4 interfaces and devices...
 
I'm not sure what I was seeing, but I was at the smpte show and at the bmd booth there was a cool guy, can't remember his name (think he was an old time original davinci brain) or product he was demoing, showing like a clipster type deal, play anything custom box. Anyway he had it hooked up to the 50" seiki and when he played a 23.98 4k clip, the seiki info window would pop up saying "24 /3840". What's up with that? I thought it only did 30?
 
I think we have a rebranded seiki 50" in sweden from andersson. It looks very similar or perhaps identical.

It says 24, but the monitor still runs at 30 internally. So you get uneven playback.
I posted a youtube video showing this, and it has been covered at length now.
Other than that, it's a great monitor.
 
If you have a video card or other source that can do good upscales and/or frame rate conversions upstream from the Seiki then you can avoid it's rudimentary internal signal processing issues. That said, since max refresh is 31Hz (nominal 30 or 29.97) you won't get the same result as when a 24 or 25fps signal is actually bumped to 60Hz refresh (nominal 59.94).

All frame rate conversions create some temporal artifacts. Ultra fast display refresh rates (like 240Hz) can make them imperceptible, but create a whole new "look" many despise. When 24 or 25fps is displayed at 50 or 60Hz, the brief "hesitations" in the motion cadence are less noticeable than at 30Hz - not to mention a motion characteristic most of us are much more conditioned to. I think this is likely the reason that some viewers see a more pronounced judder characteristic on the Seiki.

IAC, I do think the Seiki can serve a valuable role in a professional UHD/4K production environment. That said, if the limitations of these first gen models clash with your use case(s) then it might not be the answer you're looking for.

Can readers post about what they are using as input to the seiki? I have seen some posts that redray does not drive seiki and then others that it works fine. Likewise for various blackmagic products. And obviously original poster was driving with a particular graphics card (which was?). If this is covered in another, let me know. Looking for Mac thunderbolt or other output to drive the seiki at 4k for FCP x / premiere / resolve preview (will not edit with).

Ive never gotten any signal dropouts on my retina macbook but I am not running OS X and I have only used it a few hours at a time.
