  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

$1299 Seiki UHDTV 50" SE50UY04 - Bought it today

So is it worth waiting 12 days or are you still going to return the monitor?

I can hold out for twelve more days, that is, if the adapter ships on time. If not, I'll return the monitor before the 30 day return policy expires and then re-purchase if/when reviews surface of the monitors working with the adapters.
 
I'm running this display on my Windows workstation out of a GTX 580 via HDMI, but I'm getting a weird flicker that's especially noticeable on white backgrounds.
I forced the card to output 3840x2160@30Hz, with CVT blanking, but it looks like backlight flicker, or something.
Anybody else notice this?

In some situations i have seen something similar but only on windows and not long term.

Any reason you are using CVT reduced blanking? That could be part of it? Do you see it if you run at 31 Hz?

I noticed that too... the frame rate from the video seems OK to me... far from the 17Hz some people are complaining about!

At 1080p, the Seiki works well. Doesn't look great, but it works. The shortcomings of the Seiki at 1080p have been well documented on this thread. However, I didn't buy the Seiki for 1080p. I bought it for UHD. At 17Hz, the Seiki is useless. Hopefully the Accell adapters will rectify the problem.
 
How can you tell its 1080p? I know it said zoom 1080p but I think that was part of the video? The OSD for info never came up once.

Also do people recognize the software being used to play the video as Mac OS X only? My macbook pro retina works just fine at 4k under windows. The problem is only under Mac OS X.

I know the feeling. I was stuck at 17 Hz or unstable 24 Hz with a over-clocked DP -> HDMI adapter for over 3 weeks. I bought the thing when it just came out and it didnt work in its full glory on my configuration until 5/24 when nvidia fixed their drivers on linux.

The thing is a lot better at 31Hz let me tell you.

I was just curious how people were able to tell what resolution the guy was actually running at from that video. It was a bit unclear to me thats all.

I am around. PM me if you want the patch to remove HDMI limits in OS X. I will release it to the general public soon.

I am able to get up to 4K @ 25 Hz from HDMI port on 13" rMBP and up to 4K @ 31 Hz from HDMI port on 15" rMBP.

Maximum refresh rate on older Mac hardware varies, though at least you are not being artificially limited to 165 MHz anymore.

that just means those are the top searches for Seiki, not that it is available or will be soon.
 
What codecs are you playing 4K content back from?

I don't know of a way to play RED footage on linux so for regular h264 or vc1 I am just using mplayer + vdpau. Works great uses 0 cpu (for the 10-15ish 4k files I have access to).

I play low def (720p and 1080p) content the same way. I actualy wrote a script that looks at the framerate and changes the refresh rate depending on the type of file being played so the playback is smooth. It switches between 23.98 Hz for Film content, 25 Hz for PAL and 30Hz for NTSC and I use 31Hz @ 4k for desktop/normal usage.
