  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

That's pretty interesting because the conversations I have had with RED personnel at NAB would not have lead me to that same conclusion. Hmmmm... (do you have a link to where that broadcast might be on line somewhere?

No unfortunately I do not have the link, it was a live feed, I dont know if it is posted permanently somewhere, but I mis-stated, he said it is not going to be made as of now, but he used the "never say never" line saying it could come back...but with epic, epic-x and scarlet fixed lens...and then the development of red dragon...if they do decide to make it, how long will it take for it to get into our hands?

I think you are reading a lot into what you are hearing and what you are not hearing. I have spent a few hours hanging around the RED booth the last couple of days and, by listening closely to a variety of different conversations and presentations, one can pick up a lot. I won't attribute anything to any one person because I don't want to get anyone in trouble for leaning over any lines but you can believe me or not, as you like.

I was told that Scarlet is finished - period; hardware and firmware. Right now it is all about production. I was told they could almost produce a substantial number of cameras very quickly right now but for the shortage of a couple key parts. And, even at that, they will not announce that they are ready to take orders until they actual have an inventory of at least several thousand or more cameras that they can ship immediately. The Scarlet was working in the booth and I was told there were actually a couple dozen in existence, shooting flawlessly. The camera in the boot was pretty much constantly on for hours at a time - true, it was not recording, just feeding the monitor; with a really gorgeous picture. And it was shooting at ISOs of 2000 and 4000 when I paid attention.

I was told and heard more than once that RED was trying to hold the $6K price point for a shooting "kit" but they couldn't make any promises until they had all the parts finally sourced and could look at production more closely. Still no absolute answer on whether that includes SSD or CF as the default. It would seem that that kits would include the side handle, the 5 inch monitor, the REDmote and a battery but no media.

As for the Scarlet cinema (interchangeable), they were proudly showing and talking about the mini-primes. I was told the Epic-Xs were the very top priority but after those were flowing, the Fixed would definitely ship next and the cinema would ship sometime thereafter. Can't really be sure what the priority is between Epic-S and Scarlet Cinema as I didn't ask about that and didn't pick anything up. But, I can say that nothing I heard would suggest that the Scarlet Cinema was canceled or even indefinitely postponed.

Of course, none of this is "official" as I have no special inside track to RED. It is just my interpretation of what I heard and a little bit of what I think I heard between the lines. No more, no less. It got me, at the same time, both excited - because Scarlet does look so very great, and a little disappointed because, like a lot of folks, I was hoping to put a deposit at NAB. So, we wait as patiently as we can. :undecided:

I sure hope your right man! For where my company is right now, and the projects I work on, its like the three bears. The scarlet fix is too cold, the epic-s is too hot, but the scarlet 2/3 interchangeable...is juuuust right! (lol...i know...im lame :conehead: ) Thank you for your opinion Terry! Your optimism makes me feel better about it. :)
 
Regarding the interchangeable Scarlet, in a video that Cinema5D posted, Ted basically said that the interchangeable model is now the Epic-S. Here's a link to their video on YouTube queued up to where he mentions the interchangeable model:

I'm not sure you are correctly interpreting Ted's statement here. It may be that he is talking about the Scarlet S35 model having morphed into the Epic-S, which is entirely true. I don't think he was responding to what I think you were asking about which was the Scarlet Cine-16 or whatever the model with mini-primes is called. I think I saw a photo posted yesterday of mini-primes in a viewing case inside the booth, and the only use for those lenses would be on the 3K Scarlet Cine camera.

I didn't shoot the video or anything, I just saw the link here in the forums.

But, yeah, by all means, this could be a misunderstanding on Ted's part on what he was being asked. The question was about a bigger sensor for the Scarlet, so it's possible he was only referring to that.

And I saw the primes photo too, which does seem to establish that an interchangeable Scarlet is still in the works. Good point.

I guess when Ted said, "...the interchangeable Scarlet we were working on..." he was probably referring to the model with the larger sensor (the S35). I was just confused because he says, "...the Scarlet has a fixed 8x zoom."

hm very interesting.....the Epic-S does make sense for people looking foe a 'low-budget' interchangeable RED camera. Glad I switched my choice to the fixed Scarlet a while ago, otherwise I'd be pulling my hair out haha
 
Why are people so willing to jump to the conclusion that RED would abandon millions of dollars in development money, this late in the game, based on an ambiguous word or two in an off-hand statement. "Everything is subject to change..." but some things just don't make much sense. :undecided:
