  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

$1299 Seiki UHDTV 50" SE50UY04 - Bought it today

That's interesting. I don't see that 311.06 version on the Nvidia site.
I'm running Win7 64bit. Maybe that does not exist for my configuration ?

On a GTX 660ti I noticed stutter on UHD h.264 files when using driver 314.22 and 320.18, however with the initial 311.06 driver, playback is smooth for everything I've thrown at it.

Although if I run an application that uses 3D acceleration and changes the desktop resolution upon start, no matter for how long, once I exit the program and try to play a UHD video, the slight stutter will be evident again and only a reboot will restore the smooth playback.
 
OK. So got the GTX680 Mac Edition, installed it into my Mac Pro 2009. Got the active DP to HDMI adapter, updated FW in the Seiki and all I can get is 1920 x 1080... A little help?

Nevermind... works with the DVI-I output through my Gefen rig. Monitor still shows 1920x2160 @ 30Hz but it's really giving me 3840 across. Can't figure it out.

Playing from SSD , cpu is barely loaded. GTX670.
Which player are you getting smooth results with ? Any special settings ?

There doesn't yet exist an active DP -> HDMI adapter that can do full HDMI 1.4 bandwidth. The most I was able to get was a 27Hz (@238Mhz pixelclock) over DP -> HDMI and that required custom modelines and it was somewhat unstable (lost sync several times per hour) as its basically overclocking the thing. A real active DP -> HDMI 1.4 adapter is coming out sometime in the next month (according to bizlink).
 
When you play 4k footage with that cable, it only runs at 24hz. This will give you terrible jittery motion in your image. You really should get one rated for atleast 60hz (be better off getting 120hz) I didnt see what your origional problem was, but the cable will give you many problems with motion.

Finally able to do the full 30Hz on linux. Nvidia updated their drivers but the drivers are still utterly broken depending on EDID and making it impossible to do any higher or do any custom modes.

So far using that cable I have had no problems doing 30Hz for several hours with no loss of sync (I was losing sync quite a bit when I was overclocking an active DP -> HDMI adapter.

IIRC linux nvidia drivers could use custom EDID file (though probably rather for other cases, eg. when display has broken EDID support or connected via some crappy KVM switch not passing normally EDID through, or for display/mode to be set with it switched off) - maybe that can be used to work around that?
I haven't used that myself, as i had other vendor videocards, but remembering found examples for that with nvidia drivers, when searching how to force EDID with mine ..

Primarily using VLC 2.0.4 with the output module set to Direct3D (setting it back to default made no difference). I have also tried and had no problems with MPC, WMP12 and QT7 all with default settings (other than filetype association). Maybe a clean install of the driver would help, or testing on a clean install of windows? Sorry, I wish I could be of more help.


Also, I was wondering if anyone would be willing to download and temporarily install this Cyberlink Bluray Advisor http://www.cyberlink.com/prog/bd-support/diagnosis.do and see if it passes or fails for HDCP while the Seiki is set to UHD. It fails for me, but I'd like to know if it's just me. Thanks

Hmm... You actually should not be getting 3840 across, if it works, it would be 1920 across as the monitor is reporting because the display won't process the secondary DVI link from the dual-link output.

Not sure why some peoples' Macs are letting them select the proper resolution and some are not. The DP to HDMI adapter may have something to do with it, if it has active electronics in it. Not familiar with most of these other than the passive adapter types, which are typically what you want unless your system doesn't support HDMI signaling directly. Did the video card not include a passive DP to HDMI adapter?

If for some reason you can't get it to work out of the GTX card after playing with the settings, you may need to go to a utility like SwitchResX -- or you can tweak display resolution profiles manually. IMO the Switchresx utility is unnecessary unless you find yourself constantly switching resolutions on the fly. For just hooking up a monitor at native res, you can usually add in modes and timings manually if the system isn't picking them up and offering on its own.

Their drivers are really broken. I have used some really advance display configurations for a lot of years on nvidia/linux. I made a custom EDID in the weird format that the linux drivers use for my catleap q270 to get 100Hz at lower (scaled) resolutions so very familiar with that. My laptop originally was reading EDID ok so I dumped the EDID via my laptop and used the custom edid file in xorg.conf and now it looked like (from the logs) that it was reading EDID but still no output.

Keep in mind using any modeline < 165 Mhz worked just fine with no EDID but as soon as u go to 165.01 Mhz and above you get 'no signal' on the monitor and no output. This is including a 24 Hz modeline I had when I was using a DP -> HDMI adapter which worked (just a bit unstable). It wasn't until I switched from HDMI1 -> HDMI 2 and my desktop started reading EDID before the display worked at >165 Mhz pixelclock. Nvidia obviously made the higher pixelclock/HDMI 1.4 modes dependent on reading EDID off the physical monitor whichi s retarded IMHO. I will try modifying the EDID (which I am very familiar with doing) with custom modes but I seriously doubt it will work due to the way the hdmi 1.4 support was added to the driver.

I am majorly disappointed to say the least... This was after waiting 3 weeks for them to get their drivers to support it in the first place when its been supported on windows drivers for years.

All the 4K panel demos/reviews for PC use seem to be with AMD cards so I guess that is the way to go.

Should work fine with the passive adapter *if* the card/ drivers support the proper signaling out of the DP connector... But that's a pretty big "if" it seems.

I don't know how broken the drivers truly are, I think the mode(s) just needs to be manually added... Daniel says his 680 Mac edition has an HDMI port and I did some looking and yep, it's there (thought it had one).
 
So, here are some really crappy iPhone photos to show you what's going on. I made a chart in Photoshop that is 3840 x 2160 with a red border, and put the RED logo in to show that it is really a circle and not an ellipse. I'm getting edge to edge at 100% in Photoshop but the display still thinks it's getting 1920 x 2160 @30 Hz (and BTW - saying its DVI...) My hacking skills aren't that keen and I know enough about EDID to be dangerous, so I won't go into any of that. My guess, however, is that the monitor "knows" the signal is originating from a DVI port? Dunno...

Also, BTW - I am running the EVGA Mac Edition GTX680 and tried the HDMI port first. 1920x1080. Maybe I'll try it again now with my chart... Also, tried the StarTech DP to HDMI adapter that houkouonchi mentioned in an earlier post (which now I guess worked with an EDID hack?) Also 1920x1080. Now that I think about it though, all the Mac would let me send to it was it's 1080p selection. I'll try SwitchResX that Jeff mentioned...

Anyway, for now, I'm going to get back to editing. BTW - this shit looks great with a Rocket card at full res!

You may need to use SwitchResX to force a 3840x2160@30Hz image out of the HDMI port of your GTX 680 Mac edition...but I've heard OS X 10.8.4 will have native support for this card (when it's released).

Mac drivers are broken on nvidia (my macbook retina has a HDMI port too) but it only works in linux/windows. That tom guy said he had a workaround for his mabook retina through a driver hack. He might be able to help you with a fix too.

My comment earlier was if you only have display port there is nothing that you can do IMHO. The passive adapters do not work for hdmi 1.4 on nvidia machines under linux Mac OS X or windows. I have tried them already.
