  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

$1299 Seiki UHDTV 50" SE50UY04 - Bought it today

OK. I was just informed by Seiki that new firmware has been released. I have installed it and audio is now back! No pictures issues with the RedMere cables. Here is the link to the firmware:

Thanks. I will update mine with borked audio when I get home. Where you getting issues with redmere cables earlier? I am using like a 60 foot redmere cable and have issues but I think its more because of the active DP -> HDMI adapter causing the issue more than anything.

Pushing 1080p, let alone 4K, over 60 feet of HDMI is just asking for troubles. :D Make sure you have a signal booster there. You are also likely to burn out your cable -- happens to us all the time on our AV installs with long runs. We have shifted over to using HDBASE-T baluns for most runs longer than 25 feet. Just lasts longer and solves a lot of issues. The Monoprice HDBASE-T unit is actually pretty good in a pinch for less than $200. Otherwise, the Gefen ones seem to be tops. Have not tried either with 4K material, but they pass HDMI 1.3a FHD3D without a hiccup.

I've downloaded the new firmware, but have yet to install it. Will do so this evening...

Well the machine driving it is in a rack in another room. The cable was rated for 4k:

Any reason this shouldn't work? I have used a 50 foot dual link DVI cable from monoprice for many years without issue.

When you play 4k footage with that cable, it only runs at 24hz. This will give you terrible jittery motion in your image. You really should get one rated for atleast 60hz (be better off getting 120hz) I didnt see what your origional problem was, but the cable will give you many problems with motion.

Nvidia popped out new drivers today. HDMI and VDPAU (hardware accelerated video decoding) now work at UHD resolution for the Kepler cards on Linux.

You're getting a decent amount of juice out of that machine then. Technically, the HDMI spec isn't supposed to go over 15m / 45 feet without using an amplified booster. The bad side of that is most 24 to 28 gauge HDMI cables are very fragile and the connections within the connector ends themselves literally burn up or break up under load. Consider yourself lucky if it's working. We burn 'em up all the time here. Have completely quit installing HDMI cable runs over 25 feet. Run everything over that distance on a single CAT-6 cable these days. And in over 100 HDBASE-T balun installs, we have only had one failure, a power supply needed to be swapped out. With long-run HDMI, several brands -- Ethereal, AudioQuest, RAM, MonoPrice, etc.. we would probably fail 1 out of every 5 in the first 18 months. Unfortunately, it just seems to be the way they work. Sometimes we get lucky and we get a "strong" cable or a good combination. I have a 50 foot cable in my home that's been going strong for nearly 6 years with only an in-line passive booster in it. Knocking wood...

Yep, still has sync issues here on HDMI 3 as well. 1 and 2 HDMI inputs are fine. Sound works again.

Does anyone here know if this is available in UK/Europe? Or has anyone successfully imported?
Several, including me, have asked here and at other forums. As of now no news about that. You have to understand that because of size and weight shipping it's very expensive (+$450-750), you'll also have to pay fees at local custom and will have no warranty. Some very few have shipped over the pond despite all that, but for most these extra costs almost doubling price/no warranty (+risks of damage when shipping) means no-go.

BTW, about those new firmwares .. shouldn't mention/small desc./links to download for them be put in opening post?

That is just what the cable is rated for likely for standards.

I think the most important thing about a cable working or not would come down to how much bandwidth you are pushing through it (GB/s or pixelclock Mhz).

The Active DP -> HDMI adapter that is coming out lists its rated for 297 Mhz. The Modelines for all 3 modes (24 Hz, 25Hz and 30Hz) are all 297 Mhz with various levels of reduced blanking. Coincidence? I think not but this means the 24 Hz mode and the 30 Hz mode are basically the same bandwidth over the cable. I assume these modes are some kind of standard to work properly with bluray players and other hardware stuff as well which is probably why the active DP adapter for 4k also happens to be rated for 297 Mhz... Too much of a coincidence. So I don't think its going to be any difference on the cable whether I am pushing 24 Hz or 30Hz if they are both 297 Mhz:

The second value after the resolution in quotes is the pixelclock (in MHz)

The cable has nothing to do with the refresh rate the monitor runs at. This depends on the video card hardware and EDID of the display. The cable could make a difference on whether or not you can display the signal at all or whether it is stable or not though...

With heavy reduced timings I was able to even get 27hz over this cable with only around 237 Mhz of bandwidth. However due to broken nvidia drivers I am somewhat forced to run off a DP adapter which can not do full spec HDMI and I am pretty sure said adapter is flaking out causing me sync issues even at 23.97 Hz which is what I am running now. Video looks just fine at 23.97 Hz as most of my video is film framerate (23.976).

I'm getting HDCP errors while trying to play bluray discs in PowerDVD 12 and also live TV in Windows Media Center.

If I lower the Seiki to 1080p everything works fine, it's only at UHD that the HDCP errors arise.

Has anyone else tried a software-based bluray player or WMC successfully on the Seiki?

Also, would this be more likely an issue with the TV or with the video card?

Curious that Seiki has not posted this most recent bios update on their website... unless I'm looking in the wrong place.

Hard to say right off, but I'm thinking it's more likely an issue with the video card and drivers. It may not support proper HDCP handshaking at UHD resolution. :/

Which video card/ drivers are you using?

I'm using an Nvidia GTX 660ti and have tried the initial driver (311.06), 314.22, and the latest 320.18 with no luck.

It could also be the player software. I seem to recall WinDVD having issues with 2560x1600 on 30" displays in the past. Somehow I doubt it's the monitor as HDCP is integral to HDMI and upconverting blu-ray players are playing just fine. Just out of curiosity, have you tried different HDMI inputs and cables with your SEIKI? It seems the common issue is sync dropouts with HDMI #3 on the SEIKI. I wonder if it could be something like that, but the player softwares are reporting HDCP issues because they have to renegotiate the HDCP handshake.

Thanks for your help narrowing things down. I tried a few different cables, different inputs, DVI to HDMI adapter, and the two latest firmwares for the set, all to no avail unfortunately. I also tried a few HDCP advisor utilities and all of them fail at "Video Connection Type: Digital (without HDCP)".

I think you might just be right with your initial thought about it being the video card/driver. I wish I had another one to test, but no other card I own (including a GTX 480) will output UHD even with forced custom resolution. I put in a support ticket with Nvidia, but from previous experience I don't expect much help from them with something like this.

I'm not so sure it's the software because every program that I've tried results in the same HDCP error. I actually don't really care too much about the bluray player software, I just want to be able to run live TV through WMC in a window.

Good 4K client viewing ?
I'm still trying to get that with my Seiki's.
My playback still judders here and there on compressed playback. Amazing detail, but the judders make it unprofessional as a 'show off' presentation.
We are talking motion pictures , I would hope!
Playing r3d's is useless in my opinion, I want to show final edited and processed long play material.

So at this point nobody can play long format UHD media glitch free on the Seiki. Please correct me if I'm missing something here.
I am actually starting to feel that Red Users for the most part do not finish in 4K at this time. They have never seen their work at 4K playing on an affordable system.
I base my deduction on the lack of people inquiring about this playback problem. I seem to be the only one squawking about it.
While I'm on a bit of a rant... this partially explains the positive image evaluations from the magic lantern 5DIII raw hack. I displayed the sample file on the Seiki and it looked like low res 1080 crap.
But if you are used to seeing 1080, I guess it looks fabulous.
I've only been looking at sharp UHD for the last 3 weeks. It really does change your perspective. HD looks as bad as SD did. I'm not making this up.
Ok, I feel better now ... ;)

So

On a GTX 660ti I noticed stutter on UHD h.264 files when using driver 314.22 and 320.18, however with the initial 311.06 driver, playback is smooth for everything I've thrown at it.

Although if I run an application that uses 3D acceleration and changes the desktop resolution upon start, no matter for how long, once I exit the program and try to play a UHD video, the slight stutter will be evident again and only a reboot will restore the smooth playback.
