  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

12 Seconds....

+13 is the codename for the new Epic prototypes that are slightly longer than the original prototypes.

Can somebody pull out the RED dictionary and explain this to me?

During the summer EPIC test phase for cooling purposes (and probably other good reasons... like more power for HDRx) the EPIC size was increased by 13mm in length compared to the first prototypes made during the spring (LUCKY, CRACKPOT...).

This new "EPIC +13" is the one RED just started producing for final testing and if nothing goes bad it should be the "mother" of all the EPIC-X we will all receive in a few months...

Graeme,

From my (uninformed) perspective I've felt for awhile now that the design requirement to configure Epic into a DSLR-type formfactor has hamstrung some of the camera's late-stage progress.

Stills is nice, but if it has to be compromised a little to release a timely/improved motion camera, then sobeit.

That said, I think the still (no pun intended) rather small size of EPIC is a real advantage for the camera.

4 seconds for a 64gb SSD mag.

12 seconds for boot, 4 to format. in +-20 seconds you are shooting (depending how fast you are in the menus)...this is really great!

And I second Bloom, "any word on RED One SSD upgrade?" My RED is off to the mothership for the MX, it would be great to have it come back with a SSD....(dreaming)....

A mere 12 seconds for all the srs bzns Epic brings sounds great to me, especially for narrative shooting.

Unfortunately it threatens to kill my dreams of Scarlet S35 also replacing my DSLR. But I'll wait to hear about wake-from-sleep-time and sleep-battery-life before I give up.

That sounds awesome. I love when the cameras start up really quickly. Cant wait to get it.
Now the question is when can I put the money for it? when stage 4 will be available for me? if possible I'd like to make the payment before the end of the year for taxes purposes. Just wondering.

12 seconds should be a nice placeholder until that lofty lower goal is reached. You guys are just never satisfied, are you?

What is affecting the startup times? Is it optimizations? Is there a theoretical limit on Epic? In other words, is it still conceivable that you could hit the lower single digits or do you not see that as a possibility at this point?

For commercials, features, TV shows, corporate the 10-12 second boot up time will be great, perfectly acceptable. Single digits even better, but really not a showstopper either way.

Documentary, sports, nature, etc. a much bigger factor. Single digits, especially lower single digits would be huge for those markets and my guess is will sell even more cameras because that will be a major problem solved for them.

Cool news guys. Getting better all the time.

The start up time is more than acceptable seeing that the Epic is a computer in a box. And for doc shooters I am sure you will leave your cam on standby. Great work RED, you guys make it fun to do what we do.
