  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

$1099 Small HD AC 7" OLED is new Standard to beat

All right! Way to go Small HD. I just read on another forum that someone who was having issues like the ones people were describing above have been recently remedied. Coolness...
 
Stepping in here to say that this is my first SmallHD purchase (I have used the DP4 and 6 in the field) and I am blown away by the customer support. I got an e-mail yesterday from support saying that they saw my forum post and wanted to assure me about the quality of the DP7 when it releases:

The DP7 will be completely milled aluminum like the DP6 was and will have four mounting points instead of two like the AC7.

This was from an e-mail from the CEO and CTO in December, so of course things could change but I had to step in and say kudos to SmallHD on customer service and attention to detail!

Seriously though thats great to here, hopefully it all gets sorted and the DP7 lives up to the name the DP6 helped build.
 
Love what you guys are doing Reed. SmallHD has amazing customer support and I love my DP6 I dont even feel the need to upgrade at this point, but when I do it'll be the DP7.
 
I'm also disapointed by the AC7 quality (mine is LCD+SDI) :

First it appears a green gradient at the left side when it has been on since more than half an hour… I think that's a warming problem ?


Second, on the smallHD, my image is cropped ! (HDSDI from Scarlet, I see more area on my Red TouchScreen that on the SmallHD)


Third, It looks like I doesn't have all the latitude of my signal, I can't see on AC7 details in shadow and highlights that I can see not only on my RED touchscreen but also on my bad quality hdmi monitor… (Like Jean)


Four, the screen protection are not well think because it's not sealed, so in 2 days I already get dust between the screen and the protection.

And I can also add the sunhood problem... hard to put in...

It's a too bad to sell a "newer" screen that is worse than the older one at almost the same price (even if it's an other line of product).
I didn't buy an DP6 month ago because I was waiting for the new model... imagine how disapointed I am !

I contacted the support service... I will keep you informed...

I explained this to them a week or two ago so I imagine they are working on a fix. It actually only seems to happen with P not Psf signals. You can set up a custom scale preset to show all the picture if you are desperate.

I had a very good response from SmallHD !

They apologize and offer me to send me a new screen.

I did more test to be sure that the new one will not have the same issues.
here the not very accurate iphone pictures but obvious enough !

The weird thing is that every problems that I have in my video signal are in HDSDI, when I plug in HDMI I doesn't have the green gradient, It is not cropped and I have detail in shadow and highlights ! Perfect image ! If i bought the HDMI version I would be happy. But I idd buy the HDSDI version...

In order :
SmallHD via HDMI (clean image)
SmallHD chip chart test
SmallHD gradient test
SmallHD green gradient issue after 30 minutes
SmallHD via HDSDI (contrasted image, I couldn't get better with the settings)

I did received the email for returning the screen as they now releasing firmware only for those who returned the screen (!)
I have been keeping asking what the new screen will bring to me without any answer for now.

Here are few of my questions
The sun hood can't be attached more than 10 seconds to the screen, do you have fixed this design?


There is a clear signal difference between HDM and SDI input? did you fix the firmware ?


The oled screen is super soft and impossible to get clear sharp focus (compare to DP6). Changing the sharpness button do not change anything. Is the new upgrade is sharper? or is it a OLED technology issue?


When you go from black level, switching high to low, there is a huge difference on the white balance, all image is shifted to green. did you fix the firmware ?


Displaying[FONT=arial, sans-serif] a scene, the white are burned sooner and black details disappearing also earlier than on the DP6 which should be the opposite with OLEd technology, Is the new upgrade will fix this?[/FONT]


Wait and see... I also ask to get refund instead of just a new firmware which I don't think will fix the hood or softness or black level issues.

Please contact our support staff for answers to all of these questions. That is the fastest way to get accurate information. In summary... We have upgraded the sunhood and everyone with an existing sunhood will get the new version. All the other issues mentioned above are resolved via the free upgrade. We will also gladly provide a refund.

Thanks for sharing these great news, If all the issues are fixed I don't see the point of a refund! I did ask your team about this few days ago without answer and I know this website will speed up a bit.
I'm glad the sharpness will be fixed and so be able o use is for focus pulling.
 
I just got my AC7 OLED.
Beautiful display, crazy color saturation and it's way brighter then the RED touch and much much higher contrast and actual black blacks.
The plastic shell seems tough enough and it's really lightweight. Ideally it won't be getting dropped or thrown around and judging by the video even that appears like it won't be to much of an issue ;)

My biggest concern is it is not remotely weather sealed and I'm wondering what's going to happen if it gets any snow, rain or dirt blown inside...

I updated to the osv4.0.1 and the image it is not lining up correctly out of the EPIC SDI out.
If you set the aspect to 16x9 and go to Tools>Custom Scale, you can change the settings to: HSTART=542, VSTART=510, HSIZE=818 and VSIZE=470 and that seems to correct it.

Oh and for whatever reason I was expecting it to be a Touch Screen which it isn't, but that's not really an issue, it's easy to change settings with the scroll wheel and 3 buttons.

I love the high quality D-Tap power cable and sturdy BNC connections.

So other then weather sealing I would say it is a well built, lightweight, beautiful HD OLED monitor.

I may have to pick one of these bad boys up. Just wish it had a higher brightness so I can trade out my marshall monitor on my steadicam rig. I know they have a higher brightness one, but it's significantly more expensive. May just put the hood on. hehe

It effectively seems brighter then the REDtouch monitor because of the much higher contrast. I haven't had a chance to play with it in bright sunlight yet but is really nice indoors.

As for weather proofing I've just resorted to putting a clear plastic bag over it in nasty weather.

So far I'm loving mine! :)
