  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

$1099 Small HD AC 7" OLED is new Standard to beat

has somebody had the chance to try it?
if it can display all the menus i'm buying it straight away

the dp7 series does an amazing amount of things that you may or may not need.

a 2699 monitor that does bidirectional cross conversion, has all or most of the features of a $6000 leader waveform' can record h.264 dailies and mor, grom a trusted industry leader like smallhd seems like a good deal to me.
 
I'm disappointed that they only have top and bottom mounting points, without the left and right side points of the DP6, DP7, and I believe DP4. Minor thing, but frustrating for a lot of mounting scenarios.
 
In my opinion, Active matrix OLEDs offer the best video you’re going to see from any display technology. It's great if you’re an on-set colorist or something. If not then I am happy with LCD for following reason (Please correct me if I am wrong,);

OLEDs are emissive, similar to plasma displays and cathode ray tubes. They degrade over time.
OLED won’t fade/wear/deteriorate evenly…so re-calibrating will be a constant need.
OLEDs use power as a function of the specific image being displayed.
OLEDs are difficult to see in bright sunlight.

Currently I am leaning toward to AC7 - SDI ($899). Can some please Let me know if I'm on the right track.
 
Well just got an AC7 and am working on sending it back because part of the casing wasn't sealed properly, so it has artifacts, but I'm sure it's uncommon. I'm wondering if anyone else has gotten theirs yet.
 
I few years ago bought very first issued Small HD monitor named DP1 ... Inside I found very simple logic board adapted from Chinese or Korean branded TV set and cheap LCD panel from HYDIS ( Hyundai - Korea ).
Only one was really good - solid aluminum body ...
Now I think that SmallHD OLED 7,7 was made from Samsung Amoled that used on Samsung Galaxy Tab 7,7 . ( street price about $400 ) .

I think ( and hope ) that RED need upgrade RED PRO LCD 7 with newly LCD panels , because on market now very much good IPS lcd and OLED panels ( See Amazon Kindle Fire ) ... Need only new LCD panel in original desing RED Pro LCD 7 with touch control ... We ready pay for upgrade of our RED Pro LCD with new panel .
 
I have the 9" red monitor which is great. How useful do you guys think it would be to have a second monitor like this for a focus puller? I almost get the feeling that the 9" is big enough for the both of us, but I may be wrong.
One benefit I could see is that I could focus on framing and exposure while the focus puller could have a strong edge mode or similar.
However the 7.7" is a bit smaller than the 9" so maybe a bit toucher to pull focus...

On the topic of OLED:

I was super excited about getting the small hd OLED and the Sony OLED. Then I read a few threads from colorists and such which are making me rethink switching from LCD. Mostly, hardly anyone will be watching content (as of now) on OLED displays. Since the perceived difference (in the lows mostly) is so great, color grading/exposure decisions may be made that are a detriment when viewed on an LCD. I'm not limiting this to RED, as I use lots of cameras. Also, before someone chimes in, YES I know your not supposed to make exposure decisions in the field based on a monitor but of course it's fantastic when everything matches for the most part, on-set to post. Thoughts?

As a Focus Puller myself, I'd say it's extremely useful. It's always going to come down to the situation, but sharing a monitor isn't optimal in my opinion for anything other than a locked off shot, and even then, like you said, i still think you each want a monitor so you can do your own thing i.e, focus assist on one, while checking framing and exposure on the other.

As far as the size goes, i personally think even 7.7" is too big for a focus puller. But note that your focus puller should never rely solely on the monitor. The monitor is an assistant to the focus puller, if your focus puller relies solely on the monitor, it will eventually bite him in the ass so to speak in terms of being slightly behind the action and not allowing himself to learn how to judge distance.

I just bought a 7" LCD AC7 and am excited to get my hands on it, but i would have honestly been fine purchasing a 5" model if it was offered.

I did received my AC7 on the 1st of January and did some testing. It's the OLED HDMI and SDI version
First it's not a DP6 except for the menu which are very similar and screen resolution.

But all the strong aspect i liked on the DP6 are now plastic feeling,
Yes I understand the weight issue, but it really feel that it should never fall under any circumstance My DP6 is really a piece of rock, this one will be damage if I let it around some metal gear in a bag. the screen is not a bit inside as the DP6, but more like a Ipad mini style.

At first the firmware was a complete failure with huge difference between HDMI and SDI input, they now released a new one (3-1-3) which fix most of this.
Still my picture out of the box is super green and I trying to get it right without so much success. The oled black is black and huge improvement over the DP6 one for sure.

Another issue is the lost of screw hole on both side, that was super nice from the DP6 to rig it anywhere , now, it's look a bit more fragile and with less option.
they still also keep in place the HDMI connector close to the border, so you may need to cut some large HDMI plug to make it fit on it.

There are now 4 large hole on both side for letting the screen cool down (?), but make it very sensitive to the rain as you can see inside components from these. Yes the screen was never design to get under the rain, but the metal body was enough to cool it, now they need to make hole on the body, again, not that good to me. Even vertical, the bottom hole facing the sky all the way... You never know what to expect some day.


Last issue and that the main one... No Sunhood?! Ok, there is one, but no way to put it in place.
It's not obvious on their website, but they changed the 4 holes and quite strong system they had on the DP6 for a weird clip on the side system where half of a milimiter on the plastic is suppose to hold the tension of 15 cm neoprene fabric?! After making all my team member testing this, no one succeed and I ask also SmallHD to send me a video to let me know how they are making it holding more than 5 second and I still waiting for this one!
They said that they are working on extra piece to add to the system, but even with this new one, I can't understand such flaw in the design. As the DP7 announced monitor is sharing the same system, I'm very concern about having it working.
So you have to know that the AC7 is not coming with a working hood, be prepare to cut some paper if you are shooting outside!
As I adress these issue to them, they said they are ready to refund me (great!)

So overall, I'm clearly not impressed by this monitor at all. On the paper and the 3D view and wrong video you can see on the website, it's look superb in your hand, that's another story.

I'm still waiting some new deliver from them about the sunhood fixing system... Maybe you should also wait and see how this monitor will finally be designed. This is a non working prototype for now.
