  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Just curious, would you buy a 1000FPS (@4k) Red Dragon for 40-50K$? Vision Research dominates the high speed arena, but their prices are astronomical. I'm really hoping Red will release a lower cost high speed camera some day, even if it requires a bigger form factor.

+1, or even a high speed burst mode would be fine, sustained shooting probably requires a substantially different kind of camera at that speed

If i have to do high fps, I prefer the rental way.
This is specialty thing that a production is ok renting as an extra.

Though on a Red side :
I often have to deal with directors or producers that shoot everything slow mo, 5k 120. If I tell them we can do even 500fps, we will see a landslide of medias sales, and an avalanche of music video with things bursting in flames... Could be nice for the brand.
 
Leave the 1000-2000 fps stuff to Vision Research and Weisscam since this is indeed a specialty thing. But 500-750 fps would be great as an add on either in burst mode or not.
 
my hope is that RED will put high speed camera into the "i can buy" world, very hard to rationalize a 150k+ buy for the phantom 4K when you are not a rental house, drop that figure enough and it could make sense for ad/music video/doc/sport productions who now like to own their equipment.
 
Btw, would there be an accessory, like a specialized detection sensor to put on a GpI trigger, if there is indeed a high fps burst mode coming.

Or a GpI, motion, sound or heat detector, for explosions stunts... ? it would be handy If burst is limited in time I wouldn't want to miss my click.
 
This is, by far, the most important missing feature from Red cameras: a "Very High Frame Rate" burst mode. Could be 1000 frames/s for 10 seconds @4K with a compression ratio of 10:1. This kind of burst could fit into a 16GB buffer (RAM) before being written down to the SSD. Should it be impossible to compress the frames before buffering them, then, I'd be OK with a 64GB buffer holding 4 seconds of uncompressed 1000fps@4K...

Could easily and dramatically increase RED camera's value and market penetration...

I would be more interested in an updated "high frame rate" version from the Epic Dragon, rather than a new camera-sensor, even if that new sensor added 2 more stops of DR... And I am 100% certain many people would share the same interest.
 
Can we add a burst mode option to the current camera as well?

I'd be all about getting a higher end RED but i'd also like to see a bit of a bump in frame rates in the current model Epic and or Dragon. I'd even pay for the different firmware/hardware required. Maybe an upgrade?

I mean even though its at 2K/1080 the FS700 shoots full time 1080 60p. But can do bursts of 120/240.

What could we realistically expect at our current resolutions for say 9 seconds?

Either that or could we keep the current body and pay for an upgrade to get to the High speed camera? Rather than 40-50k for a new body, a 20-30K Epic upgrade?

Think the poll needs more options!
 
500fps at 4k is more than enough It would be great in a 10 sec burst

A 10 sec burst mode would be great addition, but I'll guess that the limitation is in the Dragon sensor frequency clock speed. You get a lot done i 10 sec in 500-750 fps.
 
I'd honestly be stoked on a 240-300fps burst at 4K. Not sure i'd have a use for much more than that, but am sure others would.

Perhaps you could pay based on hardware or firmware for how much of a bump in frame rates you want rather than All or nothing?
