  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

10 Scarlet Questions with Joseph Hutson... Take 2.

Doesn't make much sense to use lenses optimized for 35mm format cameras on a 16mm sized format.

David, it does if you are shooting wildlife, where for a couple of decades the 'standard' lens for 16/S16 was a converted 300mm 2.8 Canon. There are still masses out there. Users benefitted from the 'telephoto effect' of using a 35mm lens on the smaller format and also using only the centre of the 35mm image circle.

But ain't it bad to crop in on every single lens inperfection one can throw at an image? Cause we are still talking about a higher resolution device which will show those things. Probably depends on what level you look but it won't always be good anough to use glass which is made for a way bigger image circle right? Maybe by the time this is out there it would be great to make survey that rates what glass is acceptable.

With the ability to import lens data to editing programs, and with the image stabilization data being part of that data, will some editing programs give inferior image stabilization? You hinted about new stabilization features coming to Premiere, will it come to AVID and FCP via plugins? Or will some editing environments be superior in their handling of important metadata?

Lots of people are currently switching editing platforms and the roadmap for full RED utilization will be important part of the total camera system.

we don't make the stabilization algorithms inside premier.. they do.

Sorry if I missed this Jarred.
Is there a replacement for the smaller IO in the works?

Couldn't find the exact thread where this was discussed. The message of which alluding that the smaller, 'Base IO', was not going to be produced. Only the Pro IO was.

Would we be safe in assuming that other modules that have been announced are in the pipeline - Pro REDmote, Proxy Module? Sorry for pestering for answer. Those two give you so much flexibility on set, they're every exciting to think about.

Play back... ? without having to put a module on. is this the plan still ?

no playback support without the new playback module. unfortunately it is about the size of 2 x PRO/IO modules. Should be shipping next summer if everything goes well.

Ha ha ha I kid I kid.... Playback is a software firmware ( free ) upgrade that should be coming shortly :)

Post of the month... Haha!

ohhh....not so funny in the late 90'....anyone remember the Betacam SP VTR playback adaptor for the Sony BetaSP camcorders?

absolutely....

I assume there's already some kind of a motion detection algorithm in the works possibly, for the "more normal" HDRx motion blur... if there is, would it be possible to pass the motion vectors to a compositing app, in combination with the lens and motion sensor data?

That would make a pretty nifty basis for all kinds of cool stuff...

late 90's? have you seen the current F35 playback recorder? heh heh heh

haha, can that take a vhs? it's hard to find a good vcr these days... glad to see they're keeping it alive.

How is everything coming together? Is there any news on when shipping might begin (notice "might", as in "the latest prediction as of today")?

The tethered controller on the back of that recorder is sure sexy. It looks the old style Sonos controller from like 7 years ago, but with a few extra pastel (WTF?) colored buttons. That's hot.

Jarred... You guys are missing out on a whole demographic of people who still think you need super-expensive and bulky gear to get professional results. If you guys made a Super-Sized-XL Proxy Recorder and Playback Module, that was as 20% larger than the EPIC brain and weighted about as much, you would sell a shipload of them.

Hehe... I just had a discussion today with a local "broadcast engineer" who didn't know the difference between a megabit and a megabyte... They're out there.

Good point, but you're shooting through the center of the image circle. Not only is the lens at its sharpest, but the light does not have to bend nearly as much as does light entering at the edge. It's this bending of the world's light to meet a rectangular sensor that creates problems.

Shooting through the center, you'll see less of every lens aberration--distortion, spherical aberration, chromatic aberration, coma, etc. Stop down, and you're experiencing the absolute best image the lens can produce.

From earlier in this thread ...

Is it true that the Canon mount for Epic can be bought to use on the Scarlet Removable (Scarlet Cinema) so that we could control a canon mount Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 ?

Jarred just answered this one (indirectly) in another thread. Thanks Jarred

I predict the 11-16mm will be an extremely popular zoom to be used on the scarlet 2/3 removeable

Haha!! Good one! ;D

But in all seriousness though, it's just an amazing thought that you'll be able to shoot with such a compact 5K(The EPIC) and 3K(SCARLET) MOTION PICTURE CAMERA and still have playback in the same tiny box! ...Awesome!!

Maybe I missed a post on the subject, but is there any word on what accessories will be included with the Scarlet Fixed package?

The DSMC side handle (for the battery), SSD module (since CF as a base is out), and 5" LCD (since 2.8" is out) seem like necessities to have a bare-bones functional camera configuration.

Then, a RED Station will be essential, too, as will a 64 GB SSD (or CF to SSD adapter and some CF cards), but I wouldn't expect those in the package.

Is REDmote expected to be in the package? It is pretty much irresistable.
