  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

10 Scarlet Questions with Joseph Hutson... Take 2.

Will the Scarlet Removable have anamorphic modes like the RED One? I assume s16 1.3x anamorphic lenses could be used with full res 3k at normal 16:9, and 2x would be a little over 2k using 4:3.

I've got a wee question about Scarlet which occurred to me while I was filming last week. I'd been hired to make a promo film, which involves filming lot's of short interviews, and many brief shots, so 3k RAW onto SSD would be perfect. BUT my client's client also asked us to stream long presentations live and record hours of it. Now, unless you've got vast amounts of money for numerous spare SSD's, and an Epic x with the appropriate module (in which case why would you be standing doing a boring job like that?), you're going to need (I imagine) 720p H.264 encoding in camera and some way to output HD or actually just SD by, say firewire, so it can be processed, streamed, recorded etc by a laptop in real time. Will that kind of feature be enabled in Scarlet fixed? It's the kind of thing that doesn't need to be done perfectly; by the time it's streamed or massively compressed for later delivery, no one is going to notice the odd artifact, or care for that matter. But the client does care very much that it can be recorded/streamed at all. That's a deal breaker for them sadly.

Dont expect that to be happen in camera.... But look at the thread about the proxy-module, RED is working on something, but now with lower priority because there are already a few external devices that do exactly what you're asking for (with terradeck's cubes being my favorites).
 
One solution for H.264 streaming is the Teradek Cube. Streams live wired or wireless via Ethernet from HDMI or HDSDI input. Scarlet supports HDMI output on the brain and should be configurable for 720p or 1080p. Scarlet will not do this in camera, though it will output standard HD digital video for external monitoring, encoding, or recording.

Nice one, thanks Maik and David. Teredak looks good. But unless this is going to be a core business, it's an expensive solution. H.264/HDV/DV etc via firewire and encoded on the laptop is free.. :hurray: It must be difficult and expensive for RED to include. Does anyone know why? Because it's in so many consumer products one assumes it's a simple feature..
 
Well, its against RED's philosophy. EPIC and Scarlet are RAW-cameras, the codec is one of its biggest pros. ;)
Including a h264-encoder means compromises (additional hw, higher power-consumption, licence costs for the codec itself) and we all know RED isn't the company that likes compromises.

For the realtime-processing of a HD-signal via laptop, thats possible. Scarlet has a HDMI-output and there are some external capture-boxes that you can use (like a Matrox MXO2 to name one).

That was me, and I agree 100%... I was below par physically that day, but still a Red One is a mighty camera to lug up a volcano. I'm not going anywhere remote unless and until I get my EPIC and/or Scarlet Fixed! Well... I might just lug the RED into Puʻu ʻŌʻō if it looks like doing something interesting, not much uphill there!

PS yes I checked later Michael and the back focus *was* off! Bloody amateur mistake on my part. I reset back focus and shot some stuff in the UK that was pin sharp.

Many thanks to Joseph and Jarred for an interesting and informative thread. It led me back to Take 1, which featured...

Kind of... the side"cosmetic" pieces on Scarlet are removable.. and you can get different finishes. I can't remember if we officially mentioned that before for the 2/3"...... but you can. But please... No pink. "

Is that still the plan? Will it be possible to order custom finishes for EPIC too? It obviously can be done - yes I've seen your white one Jarred and liked it!

For me I think maybe any of the numerous add-on recorders: Ninja/BlackMagic/Sound Devices/etc. will be a must have. At least until SSDs get cheaper! These recorders will go a long way towards long recording sessions and projects that don't demand 3K rez.

I don't know, you can always shoot with higher compression and use the scaled down 1080p-mode. So there is enough room to reduce file-sizes, while still having the advantages of RED-RAW and in-camera recording.

And remember, RED's RGB-codec is in the works too.

Don't fear the RED-RAW-codec just because it can(!) produce lots of data. ;-)

I'm sure this will sound like a very basic question, but:

What is current line-up of modules looking like?

I'm familiar with those listed in the (now antiquated) scarlet features, add-ons list: http://red.cachefly.net/N30/Nov30th.jpg . I had heard about the possibility of dropping the base I/O module in lieu of offering the pro version only. There was also talk of a proxy module some time ago that seems to have picked up again. Thanks for any light you might be able to shed on this.
 
The first rear modules that will be available is the 4-Battery Module and the PRO-IO.

Is there a replacement for the smaller IO in the works?
 
Play back... ? without having to put a module on. is this the plan still ?

I can live with the EPIC exactly as it is... (minus not having playback)

if I can only have instant playback viewing 120fps, & 300fps a second after I shoot, I'd never say another word. The camera would be perfect !..
 
Is a second line of slower/cheaper REDMAGs, aiming mainly at Scarlet-Users, something worth considering for RED?

I think this would make the camera extremely popular for both run and gun and doc-drama work.
I had planned on purchasing the fixed but if this is an option the interchangeable would be an extremely attractive option for me.
