  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

1.8" SSD Module

This is solid state (that God for that bumps and such wont harm it), and I understand the concern, but I wouldn't have the EPIC sitting out over night without some kinda cover on it.

The sand storm situation is interesting, but I'm sure there is some solution for it?
I would think these cams are weather sealed too?
 
I had a good play on Friday with an Epic (non working).
Air comes in through a vent under the lens, and out the top.
Heatsinks are clearly visible inside the body under the (plastic) curved lid.
Ted explained to me that water can enter the top of the camera, and not come into contact with electronics, and out the bottom somehow (going around the electronics), though there are no visible escape holes.
 
dust and moister is an issue for sure but I think more so is the media being dislodged while in use. I can't stress how important the recording media is, it is after all what is capturing the images and if it stops working and say gets bent then the camera is pretty useless with no means of recording the images.

But like Jarred said we don't know the whole picture so I'm sure explanations will come with time and improvements will happen with Tattoo cameras in the field as this is important stuff to get right.

So, in essence, using Epic when it's raining makes the camera liquid cooled for a moment :)
 
That's actually encouraging though I will still have insurance and do what I have to so that the camera is protected.
I would like to here some more details on this water flow system though.

When it comes down to it, Red as a company is clearly focused on making their cameras as modular and as flexible as possible. For them, that means taking into account both speed/performance and security in any number of ways.

Clearly there are ways for Red to favor security over performance (in this case protecting the media vs. making it more easily accessible for reloading). If you look at the decisions they've made thus far I think you'll notice a pattern of a thoughtful balance between any conflicting factors.

With the exposed SSD I think they've essentially chosen to make the module small and the media as light and accessible as possible, knowing that if someone has a concern about the security of the media (bumps/moisture/etc) it can be remedied with an aftermarket bracket or cover to fit the specific situation. Modularity doesn't end at the OEM level unless it's limiting.

Conversely, if the camera is living in a studio and won't be doing much dancing then ease of use takes precedence over robustness and the default configuration needs nothing supplemental.

Personally, I think the Alexa strikes the best balance.

I really can't believe what a big deal people are making about the ssd mag sticking out.

First of all people...If you want something that's super flush get the CF card Module or the Side CF card Module instead.

Second, most people that will be using the ssd module will be using an advanced enough configuration that there will surely be other stuff sticking out further from the camera than the mag (evf, lcd, matte box, wires) I mean even the RED volt XL's look like they stick out farther but I heard no complaints about that?

Yes, but if you bust one of those, you won't lose an hour's worth of footage.

I am not too worried about it. But it would be nice to have something that won't bust easily, or have to go out and buy a third party accessory (aka: ET HD-SDI breakout box)

Guys, RED may be right. It might not be an issue at all... and all will be fine. If so, we're in business. But the Tattoo program exists specifically to figure these sorts of things out. So if it does turn out to be an issue, I'm sure RED will redesign it before it gets released to the masses. In my eyes, that's the purpose of the Tattoo program... to prevent decisions that don't make sense to the filmmaking community at large from making it into the final product. But as we've all learned before, sometimes these things aren't apparent on the drawing board. We'll see when we have it in hand... and this time, it won't be too late! :)

I'm withholding judgment until I've used it and spent time with it.
 
What about something like this (made of plastic) for a solution? It's just an add-on, so wouldn't require any complex re-engineering on Red's part.

Seriously. This is a total non-issue on a camera that looks to be maybe 5" at the thickest point on the body. In fact, it is probably the fact that the body is so narrow they have to do this. Maybe RED should just go back to the drawing board and widen the camera by another 2 or 3 inches so the entire drive can be swallowed by the module. I mean, the lenses are wider than the camera body not to mention the aforementioned matte-box. Sometimes I hate that RED has such an open forum because it encourages people to whine about things they have not seen, touched or used in the flesh. Jim and Jarred are stronger men than me.

I totally agree people may be over reacting a little but that's the thing with feature film professionals - it's their job to cover all the bases. A fuck up on set could cost the production more than the camera's worth and that's when producers start to say, "What the hell, let's just get an Arri". That's when your investment in a Red kit starts to pinch unfairly.

These cameras are (as far as we all know) not even beta yet, so now is the right time to raise these concerns. Yes, some people have less than ideal manners but constructive criticism at this stage can only be helpful.

If one little 5 gram plastic moulding like I proposed could help, then why not do it? However, if it does require a rethink to put the slot at the bottom or whatever, pre-beta would seem like a good time to know about it.

to repeat again it is a design sort of issue (media card safety) just because I showed that before here that the main competitors

as well known brands like an Arri and Aaton take care about it.

One more possible story:

3C. You shoot handheld and couple of times you suddenly hit the media card during your movements and camera stopped

recording (media slot error).

Then you'll get in a big fight with director and producer just because of repeating of those shots.

Probably the next time you will not be hired by those guys and it means you are fired from their productions maybe forever.

Just because your chosen and recommended camera fuc** you up couple of times during those important shots.

RED should immediately redesigned this thing and with Epic to offer more rugged, safe and robust solution to protect

media cards, drive and whatever is in that way important to have safe recording in any sort of shooting and weather situation.
 
I wonder what normal people in this world would think of us if they stumbled across this thread somehow by accident..

Not sure if they would be impressed by the amount of passion that one can have over a safety latch for a memory card , or instead if they would be absolutely horrified by the amount of passion that one can have over a safety latch for a memory card ..

I always felt that RED as a brand inspired living on the edge of passion.
It's part of why we like you guys as a company.
