Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)
I have purchased a new Mac laptop and a Mac Studio and I am still finding Red Cards formatted in UDF take a long time to mount and unmount. There was some talk of extra UDF drivers you could install to speed up the process. Is there a way of getting these UDF Volumes to respond more quickly?
I have a shoot coming up and we plan to finish in HDR and we will also have access to the Sony BVMHX310 HDR monitor on the day. Has anyone set up a Monstro or any Red camera for HDR monitoring? Reading the manual I assume in Output Transform I select Rec2020 as my Colour Space and HDR2084 as my...
The Australian Cinematographer Society Technology Committee has created a video discussing the basics of virtual production and specifically its use, challenges and impact for cinematographers. Virtual Production is likely to either fundamentally change the way we use chroma screens or...
I am helping out on a small project which is being cut on Premiere and there is alot of resizing but when I import into Resolve either .XML or .AAF from Premiere the project is rebuilt with everything but the R3D resizing. Resolve says it can't read the resizing and will import the clips as...
I have started designing a cinematography exercise for personal enjoyment. I am very interested in the look of early colour photography such as autochrome and hand tinted black and white photography. Also considering emulating the looks from early black and white and I came across some photoshop...
I have just finished running a series of tests on a preproduction model of the Sony FX9 and surprisingly the Auto Focus system proved effective, configurable, smart and practical. It’s main technical limitation is it presently only works with Sony E mount lenses. I also understand the new Canon...
Presently watching "the Boys" on Amazon Prime and congratulations to all the cinematographers involved. It looks fantastic and a wonderful use of the 2.35 aspect ratio. Again the Monstro camera shows itself as the first class camera it is.
I can't find anything about the cinematography process...
I was wondering if anyone was using the new Canon EOS R as a Directors Viewfinder? Shooting with a Monstro the sensor size would be very close in 16x9 and the articulated rear LCD would be very handy. With the EF to RF mount adaptor my CN-E lenses would work. In video mode the 1.8 crop makes it...
I can't find on Apple or Blackmagic's website a cable or box that I can plug into my USB-C connection on my iMac 2017 so as to output HDMI or SDI to a broadcast monitor. Can someone suggest a device that will do this job? Blackmagic used to make a thunderbolt to SDI min box I used on my previous...
I am very interested in anybody's camera setups that are using eyepiece levellers and how they have built their rig. Would love to see any images or thoughts on how they went about it?
I was hoping to set up my rig with an EPL (eyepiece Leveller) such as the one from Wooden Camera...
I am familiar with setting the back focus of a camera with a zoom lens but I am wondering what the procedure is and is it possible using Prime lenses? I rarely use zoom lenses and generally I use my EF Mount Canon CNEs or PL Primes on larger budgets. Without easy access to a zoom could I set my...
I do not understand Red's approach on the placement and treatment in the menu’s of the way shutter speed responds to changes if frames per second (FPS.) Originally found in the menu tree under "Display" Red have now changed its position so its now found in "Overlays." Neither position is...
The Australian Cinematographers Society has a large collection of vintage lenses and cameras in its library. In the 35mm format there are these sets (below) that have piqued our interest and we are considering shooting some “fun" tests with modern cameras.
Set of Super Baltars a 20,25,35,50...
Just a little heads up for anyone prepping a Monstro Package or buying a Monstro camera that 4"x4" filters just don't cover. A 4"x4" filter struggles to even cover a 50mm lens ! 4"x5.6" filters are probably as small as you want to go. I do not have any 138mm rounds to test but if you are using...
I would like to suggest its time for the revolution to start putting the reactionary dogs ups against the wall and make a clean start. Since FW v7 it takes 75 seconds for my Monstro to start and menus are sluggish. Nearly six seconds to zoom into an image for a focus check and over 8 seconds to...
For Many years I have used the PAID application on my Mac to generate Invoices. PAID was designed for crew members and it also allowed me to make summaries and reports to give to my accountant but the software has not been supported for years and 10.13.3 has finally broken it. There is a...
I see on IMDB that Star Trek Discovery is recoreded on Redcode Raw so I assume it is shot on a Red Weapon Dragon. Is this the case as there is suprisingly litte I could find on the web. The only evidence I found was a set monitor showing an Alexa menu.
Can anyone explain or point to me some resources on effectively using the three wheels under CDL in RedcineX ? The traditional three wheels in colour grading are obvious but CDL is somehow using them differently. It would be great if there are videos online showing people using them but I can...
I am involved with the Technical Committee for the Australian Cinematographers Society and I am planning both a presentation and video looking into the nature of large sensor cinematography.
We already have the amazing Arri65, the imminent release of Sony’s Venice and now Red’s Monstro’s are...
While everybody is getting excited by the new iMac Pro as a professional cinematographer rather than a post production professional the iMac Pro looks like overkill with a serious price tag to match. I was wondering what people thought of the new iMac line up? I was looking at an up-specced...
