Virtual Production. Do we now have the Holo Deck?

The Australian Cinematographer Society Technology Committee has created a video discussing the basics of virtual production and specifically its use, challenges and impact for cinematographers. Virtual Production is likely to either fundamentally change the way we use chroma screens or completely replace them. Cinematographers working in the medium to high budget worlds are now likely face shooting in a LED volume sooner rather than later with over 100 LED Studios being built globally in 2020. While there is a fair amount of information discussing the 3D game software Unreal and the use of Virtual Production for Mandalorian we decided to make a video that looks specifically at Virtual Production through the lens of cinematography. We threw some of our best DOPs into a LED volume shoot and we share their experience as well as talking to people with a deep understanding of the process. Its great holiday viewing !
