"The first working prototype of ARRI’s new Alexa 35mm digital camera was shown at an
AFC Micro Salon presentation on Saturday, February 13th at 10 am.
New test footage shot in Rome and inside St. Peter’s Basilica was screened."

AFAIK, the Alexa records internally [behind the door on the smart side].

Brook,

unfortunately Alexa can't record internally and there is still no any media shawn at the presentation in Paris.

Actually there is only 2 x HD-SDI out on back of the camera and that's how the footage screened at the show was recorded on a separate HD-SDI recorder device.

Arri Alexa shoots at St. Peter’s Basilica and Sistine Chapel in Rome.

I love how Arri have the rod support built into the camera, saves on weight and space.

Would like to see EPIC mock up with FF & Monitor as you have to have a monitor to see what your shooting and a FF to control the focus, else you're not going to make very good looking images :-)

Fair enough Sanjin, perhaps I've only heard conjecture.

Either way, I'm absolutely thrilled about both of these cameras. Cannot wait to start working with them.

At the BVE this weekend Arri told me the recording format for the Alexa would be internal and details would be released at NAB.
The mock up i saw of the Av Plus was very promising, its basicaly the same shape/size as an Arri 416. What i saw of the sensor was very impressive.

I'd put money on internal recording being the primary concept... probably a few options [maybe for RAW, video/RGB... even compressed RAW? Etc]. Pure speculation, but it's what I'm hoping for. Uncompressed inboard recording seems unrealistic, but who knows?

All other recording options are still at level of a pure speculation except HD-SDI:

"All three (Alexa) cameras will have a number of HD-SDI outputs, so all the regular HD recorders can be used."

A quote from Marc Shipman-Mueller - ARRI Product Manager for Cameras & Lenses.

Sanjin's cut and paste flurry and conjecture aside, you are of course correct. We have public stated this, AND it has been on our www.arridigital.com website for some time. http://www.arridigital.com/teaser

While I guess it does have some merit I have always wondered what the "sport" of conjecture about stuff that will be made public very soon is all about.

Not revealing the complete media, format and workflow until April isn't a stunt, its a business necessity, we have contracts and NDAs with other company(s) that need to all have everything ready and working on day 1 when we deliver ALEXA. If people or companies want to be "off balance" as a result it's their privilege, I just dont understand it when it gets past casual conversation over a beer.

There will be PLENTY of time to react-to or embrace ALEXA when she comes out in public. Plenty of time.

Let's just say that I'm pretty impressed so far.

internal as the main option doesn't make sense at it would mean tying up the camera to get the data off which would stop the shoot.

Recording inside the camera with removable media could be considered internal.

Having a recorder attached to the camera could be considered on board recording.

Everything doesn't HAVE to be optional.

Stay open and stay tuned:-)

One issue that is not conjecture is that options for high bandwidth recording to physically smaller devices is a fast moving arena. Props to RED for changing perceptions of what makes sense in terms of size and compression ratios.

If ARRI, or anyone else, can proffer an uncompressed on-board recording topology that suits real world environments there are still plenty of interested parties. That said, I truly believe that RED is on the right track, "proper" compression of sensor data is a rational strategy. Perhaps a module capable of uncompressed output for studio greenscreen work will eventually be offered for the modular cameras (Epic, Scarlet) if there is enough demand. RED's willingness to listen to their user base (like on this forum) is exceptional and much appreciated.

FWIW RED has had a very viable 4K to CF card unit in the field for almost 2.5 years, its called the RedOne. I anticipate that ARRI with all its resources and close to 3 years of technological advancement in the interim will have some excellent options by April. I also believe that the Epic will benefit from many of the same innovations when it hits the streets.

Oh crap, now I'm in conjecture mode too :out:

Cheers - #19

Interesting,

when "Sanjin's cut and paste flurry" then the official company representative(s) or the forum moderator(s) are immediately jumping in.

It's like in a live show...

and a bit about a monitoring :seeya::yikes::coolgleamA:

Stay tuned.

Arri has fantastic design - absolutely user friendly.

If by that you mean access to buttons then, it looks like it. If by that you mean friendly to the operator, then I strongly disagree. From these pictures, it looks like the camera is suffering from the same problems that the Red does- it is a square brick that is unfriendly to hold and operate. That is a huge step in the opposite direction from the other Arri camera's (film). One thing that has always impressed me with Arri, is how ergonomic and natural their cameras feel. Even the pistol grip feel like it is an extension of my hand. I hope that with their new digital line of cameras they keep moving in that direction and not in the brick direction of Red ...

Arri, if you are listening: keep as much of the design from your film cameras as possible. Operators everywhere will sing your praises if you do. :)

An internal recording option is planned by ARRI but they aren't ready to announce what it will be, that's all.

There is no reason to assume it isn't going to happen so there is no reason to keep harping on this notion that it is only "conjecture". There is no reason to hint or imply anything. This is much ado about nothing. There is no conspiracy here. ARRI is just working out the details, that's all. Adding a memory card recording capacity is nothing new these days.

I have to agree with you if your referring to how it "looks like it feels", however, everyone that I have been with that put her on their shoulder, was surprised how comfortable she felt.

Sony's SRW9000 looks crazy big and bulky but feels pretty decent on the shoulder and the Apple iPad looks kinda awkward but I had one in my hands last week and it felt wonderful, so please hold on until you put ALEXA on your shoulder then we'll see how you feel about her.

To riff off the old saying, ALEXA's built for comfort AND for speed
