RED is a trademark...

This is a very important and relevant question, so I hope someone from Red will answer directly...

In addition to redographer.com, I also registered red137.com.

I would think that in the case of red137.com, I am advertising a specific camera, and not tying an association to Red the company.

I am also *not* using Red137 as the name of my company, just as a placemarker on the internet.

Is this acceptable?

Hey Thor.. unfortunately as per your description that indeed is a violation of the trademark. ( leveraging our trademark for advertising purposes).

email me jarred @ red.com so we can sort it out.

I'm beginning to think every on the board registered a domain name with the word RED in it. jarred I think you should bring us all out for a drink

Hi,

Has anyone here used a readhead?

You and others need to get over it. Its trademarked if you want to take a battle to court go ahead. Yes there are lots of products and companies using RED in product names or lingo, but we are talking about something different here.

Again instead of constantly coming up with semantics about it, just use some of that creativity to make something of your own. Why the need to capitalize on the RED name? Why make it difficult for RED to protect itself? Why would any fans and owners want to incur legal costs on both sides?

Any decent DP should sell based on their style, know how and art, not what camera they use or the need to capitalize on RED's fame and trademark.

Think of a new name instead of being babies about it. If you are not using the name, stop thinking of stupid similarities to prove how cleaver you think you are. We all can think of things with RED in the title, your not special.

Why not take the time of think of something or a name that is original instead of why its okay in your head to leverage a successful brand.

I suppose I should have called my company Moviecam Compact Owner.com or Aaton XTR Prod rentals.com because I went out and bought a few? No.

LAME.

Hi,

If that is aimed at me? I don't have or ever have had any company or domain name with the word red in it.

I have just pointed out that the name red and even a company called red alert have been arround for a much longer time than Red one.

I sell my services by the quality of my work, the majority of my income is derived from shooting 35mm film. I am over it!

I think I'm going to start a sunglasses company and call them iREDleys...wonder if I'll get in trouble...

just curious - in some slavic languages word red is not the name of the color, but the word for "order", a "line" etc. so what is happening if someone is naming his company in another language using word which is no way connected with any color, but graphically looks similar?

or to use phonetic equivalent of RED, in languages where latin alfabeth is not used - arabic, japanese, chinese etc. languages? to produce similar sound with different signs/ letters, but the meaning is the same?

Something also that needs to be considered is the act of communication. If advertisers cant advertise that they have red associated services won't that slow down the process of people searching for those services? I mean this is a niche market at the moment and i think it's a mistake to cut down on that communication; for the sake of the growth of red cam company. For example a producer has heard about red and does a search for a consultant or hire services but can't find the information. He/She may not proceed to check it out if the they can't find the info... I believe that the trademark issue has to be defined more so people know exactly where they stand in relation. Maybe a more clearly defined statement is needed?
