  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Because the focus marks are actually an OLED screen...

Someone buy this man a beer...

How about this? Not only does the witness mark show the current focused distance, but additional witness marks could be shown on either side showing depth of field right on the distance scale for whatever T-stop is currently set. Kind of a poor man's ARRI LDS built right into the lens...?

This OLED tech could really be amazing. Say you're doing scripted work, and you have three marks for an actor (10, 15, and 20ft) You quickly plug those in on the REDmote, and than only those distances show up over on the lens, equally spaced over the entire curve of the focus ring. You'd really have pretty amazingly detailed control.
Peace,

-Harry

Yes, and being able to quickly add custom marks would be awesome too for the focus puller. They could for example appear each in a different color and with a different number / letter. Could be very helpful.

Bingo. Especially if the color of the lens mark matched the color of the tape mark on the floor. :)
Peace,

-Harry

It makes sense, the higher resolution these cameras get the more precise control is going to be needed. Im no focus puller but not sure if existing mechanical control is going to be good enough from a technology point of view.

Thanks! Is not possible to use all the technology of the 8x guts and turn it into a mounting lens? I know it sounds easy, but is probably really complex. I'm just really keen to use RED's zoom glass.

Thanks for the update that the lens is ready, but not the camera.

PLEASE POST THE PHOTOS WHEN YOU can, be amazing to see what the camera entails. :emote_happyhappy:

this gets asked again and again and the answer again and again is that fixed means fixed.

I speculated that it was just LED backlit yesterday, because I completely forgot about the existence of OLED and its characteristics to be malleable (So it can follow the contour of the lens).

All I have to say is, genius. Supposing we can make the focus marks on the display itself. No more using those stupid white disks and having to soak them in bleach because the marker never comes off. I think someone else mentioned this, but I have an old Voigtlander from the 50s that actually has red markers for depth of field. This would also be a great feature on the OLED screen.

Touch Screen Mechanics

Touch Screen Mechanics

Well, then while you're at it, why not this one ?
http://techresearch.intel.com/articles/None/1813.htm

Well, thats fine with me! but i just figured that USB (EDIT :: 3.0 - backwards compatible) is already a widespread existing standard that people are familiar with... so it would be a more likely addition... anyway...

OLED on the focus marks is kicking my ass right now... question on the touch focus mechanism => I assume that you will be able to select a point on the frame which it will analyze, then you will be able to do some sort of {perhaps} iphone-esque slider (with focus marks above it) so one can control the speed of the focus change, where 0 on the slide line is your current focus and based on an analysis of circles of confusion... your camera can approximate the end point?

OR

that kind of a system (slide line) could be implemented for values that are already set (IE the enire range of the lens, in a free focus mode) so there are no variables (as there would be in any moving touch focus environment, and last time i checked the camera still doesnt have any depth reading capabilities...

So im still confused about the utility of the touch focus screen... if we want to control the speed of the focus... the camera would have to be constantly analyzing and re-guessing as you change the focus to see if its hit its optimal mark, so any linear representation of this change would be, o some degree, a guess... at least the way i understand auto focus...

so are we going to have ACs still doing focus pulls, then whipping out the tap screen to have the camera fine tune it at the end of the pull?

Sorry if this has been covered before... still learning!

But I will also be rooting Canon, Sony, Nikon, Pani.

I'm kind of amazed that Canon hasn't put a big sensor in a camcorder yet. They're an in-house business with a lot of resources. They're going to a lot of effort setting up their DSLRs to shoot video, but don't seem to want to take that big step and design a large sensor camcorder from scratch. Either that or their development cycle is really long.

I'm sure RED has put a lot of testing and thought into the Touchscreen focus thing and will be very curious how this works and feels and of course how smooth it is. if you can use a stylus of some sort to drag in which you could touch it to an actors face and just follow the face (for example) and it would stay in focus whether they move from 14ft to 5ft that would be awesome. Or be able to just program in start ft a and end ft b over x period of time would also be cool. I'm most curious to see how this feature works but if it works really well it will be one of the most interesting features of the entire feature set. Just like everything, functionality, feel and consistency is key.

Just a reminder.. if you wanna bitch.. do it in the complaint department. If you do it here.. your threads will just be deleted so you are wasting your time.

Dont worry.. people still read the complaint department, your message will be heard.

Hehe, funny... I called out the OLED screen yesterday, but what do I know. :prrr:

oops i missed that one.. too many posts :)

Dont forget as well.. one lens = Metric and Imperial. For some people that work/rent internationally, thats a pretty big point.

Lots of incredible things you can do once you make lens marks a non-fixed asset.

hehe one can tell ;) this thread is overflowing...

there's tons of assumptions about the oled in the last 20 mins ;) metric/imperial being one of them. thanks a lot for confirming ;) then markings were mentioned a couple of times :) any hints on these?

also on the way on how to control the beast... redmote or solo?

.....I'll settle for a TATTOO!

Just don't get one while drunk....
