  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Karuta - Japonica

Great stuff Paul!

Great shots. Love the shallow dof. The overcast day really works for the little robot.

Just curious, don't take this question wrong, but are you planning on any digital makeup... softening, glow, etc?
I'm thinking about adding glow to the piece to soften the highlights a little but I'll wait until the edit is done to determine the creative grade.

Cheers,

Paul

Every day I come here and every day I'm impressed... no exception today!

I said that with Build 16 we would stand up to any 12MP DSLR. I stand corrected. Seems we are already there with B15.

Great shot Paul.. Can't wait for the graded version.

If I'm allowed to make a suggestion, you should tell the colorist to watch the movie "Memoirs Of A Geisha" first before grading your footage.
IMHO, it's a good reference.

Thanks Jim, that means a lot coming from you! :)

I've gone and put three of the shots through Photoshop for a little secondary grading. You can download the full size versions by clicking on each image (16bit PNG files, sRGB colour space, around 28MB each). As you can see, even at full resolution they hold up fantastically well to any DSLR in the equivalent megapixel range.

Can't wait to use Build 16!

Cheers!

I'll let myself know! :)

I've seen "Memoirs of a Geisha" - it's a gorgeously shot movie and deserving of the Oscar for Best Cinematography. Only problem for me is the story.... I nicknamed it "Days of Our Kimonos" after watching it, in honour of the (in)famous soap opera "Days of Our Lives", because that's what it felt like to me! :)

Cheers,

Paul

My humble opinion is that your work looks so sharply good that adding some glow is useless if not "destructive".

very Clean looking. I like the shots of the robot but some of the shots of the woman are laking a bit of depth IMHO.

Still very good, you have a distinct style to your work, if we all did the same thing it would get boring.

like a surgery work!
Impresive Photo.
Ultra prime rules for this.
really beauty!!!

The photography looks fantastic Paul! Congradulations!

Just curious... On your website you mention that you used "ARRI Ultra Prime and Red lenses only". Obviously most of your shots were done with the 85mm and 135mm primes, but I was just wondering if any of the images you uploaded here were shot using the RED zoom?

Finally, I really enjoyed listening to you on "Red Centre". Can't wait to see the finished clip!

Thanks for your time!

Best Regards, Chris!

None of the stills posted were done with the Red lens - in fact only one shot in the entire music video was done with the Red 18-50 and that's purely because I needed a wide angle closing shot. Unfortunately it suffers a little in noise compared to the rest due to shooting at night with available (city) light only, but no one will care once the clip is finished as they'll be watching everything else before that and winding up with it as the video fades to black....

Sorry it isn't up yet, I'm still editing as I have been working almost 30 days solid for clients and haven't been able to give it the attention it deserves. Rest assured it's close to completion now and as soon as it's done it'll be posted here in its entirety at 1080p.

Thanks again!

Paul
