Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)
I'm very pleased to finally present this video in full high definition for your viewing pleasure!!!
For those who want to know specifics, this was shot using Build 15 way back in June of last year with zero lighting, in order to demonstrate Red's capabilities and be a tech demo for us (as well as being a great music video in its own right obviously!).
In putting the final video together I decided that because it was a tech demo, I wanted to grade this entirely in RedCine in order to prove to people that it is more than capable of getting to 99% of a full grading suite's quality with zero cost to the client. So there are no secondaries tweaks or additional noise reduction etc, just what I could get out of RedCine's colour panel.
Editing was done entirely within the CS4 suite using Premiere Pro CS4, After Effects CS4 and Encore CS4 along with the Red plug-in. Workflow consisted of editing the R3D files on the timeline, noting the shots used in the final edit, rendering those to 1920x1080 TIFF sequences from RedCine after colour correction, then using After Effects to convert those sequences back to uncompressed AVI files for timeline replacement as well as stabilisation for a couple of shots. From there the sequence was sent to Media Encoder to create the various formats and output the Blu-ray and DVD versions for final disc creation. There are still some areas of the workflow that could use better automation but for shorts, music videos and commercials it is more than viable to cut and create a high quality product on your home PC, today!
Please feel free to mirror the above file in order to stop my web server being reduced to a smouldering heap....
I will be putting a smaller 1280x720 version up soon for those of you with older computers, as well as an iPhone version just for fun, so stay tuned.
Enjoy and please give your feedback, good or bad, here so I can learn for future videos.
Remember to view this under Rec.709 conditions for the most accurate playback colour. Gamma issues on the Mac will cause this to look overbright if you haven't compensated for it....
Thanks to my staff, Musetex, Flower Robotics and of course Karuta for helping bring this vision to life. I couldn't have done it without you!
I chose a natural colour grade for this video based on your feedback in this thread and also because I wanted to show how naturalistic Red's image could look before any creative colour grading was applied.
Also this was done entirely on the PC for those curious - no Macs were harmed during the making of this video!!
....and finally, an iPhone version!! Grab this to conveniently miss all the times I buzzed focus in the days before 1:1 focus check existed, combined with Ultra-Primes wide open! :innocent:
This can also be played on regular computers, so if you want to see the music video before committing to downloading the high resolution versions you should grab this version to help you decide!
You're right on the exposure problem for the night shots - we had no lights and used the Red 18-50 T3 (wide shot) and the Ultra-Prime 85 T1.9 (closeups) but at ISO320 they were severely underexposed. The night shots were done guerrilla style as we didn't have permission to shoot in the middle of Shinjuku!
I also didn't apply any noise reduction on this so perhaps I should revisit it and see what I can clear up. This was a tech demo and test so we wanted to see what we could get with nothing - I have to say that even though it's a bit noisy it's pretty good when watched in motion on the big screen.
