  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

You think the Gunner is placed where it could be a handle? Looking at the shoulder mount and imagining it on my shoulder it seems like the gunner would be just in front of your shoulder making it difficult to reach with your hand.

You are the run and gun expert though so if you think it is possible I will believe you!

No, you misunderstood my post. The Gunner and the handle are separate. Look at the render again. The Gunner is in the foreground and the adjustable handle is next to it, but on the other side of the Gunner, sticking out at a 45 degree angle in the render. The handle goes all the way up and disappears on the far side of the the lens, exactly where a servozoom unit would be to interface with the lens zoom gear.

The name "Gunner" may be a derivative from a device that enables "run n' gun" production, in essence, a "Run n' Gunner"

So what's the next step

So what's the next step

How does one go about making a reservation, book any of the stages. Will the website store updated for taking bookings soon?

There is something in those renders of the RED Electronic FF lens that nobody has picked up yet.... something that is actually pretty incredible ( and a first )

I noticed that it seems the focus markers are... I don't know, LED illuminated? The 3'6" is highlighted in red as the selection while all other markers are white. I don't know if someone has pointed that out yet. ACs would love that.

I also have no clue what the [VC], On, and Off switch next to the MF/AF switch is.

I think you misinterpreted the "option" option. I don't think you wait out option 1 , then option 2 and then finally option 3 - I believe that when it comes to your turn in the cue, you make a choice of one of the options (though option 1, I'm sure will be gone by the time it reaches 1590). Or did miss something in the announcement?

Cheers,
Dale

I think this is correct. Except Option 1 is not something we choose. RED will offer option one to a select group of people.

On the Redmote render there is a histogram, So does this imply complete wireless remote control of the camera so say an assistant can control and monitor iris and other set ups, rather like a vide camera CCU ?

Only my guess.

It was about a month ago when I mentioned that it was a really good thing to be a RED ONE owner... :-)

actually some of the older nikon lenses don't have an AF motor in them, so the motor was built into the camera. Some of the newer cheaper nikon DSLRS lack that motor and thus can only manually focus those lenses.

I suppose that's true.. My bad on that. I guess what threw me off was the comment about only the DX lenses being supported for AF on the newer cameras. Which is not the case.

I think that is incorrect. I'm pretty sure you can use your RED ONE as credit towards any camera body. It's the Epic-X package that just is most immediate and probably has the best value (if it's what you're looking for).

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Just read the announcement, it's rather clear on the matter.

What are you talking about? All the Nikkor AF lenses work on all the Nikon DSLRs I've ever tried, including my lenses I own and use on my Nikon DSLRs almost daily. Maybe I missed something with the D60, but all is fine with the D40, D70, D2[X], D3, D90, etc..

nikon have 2 different focus drive methods, AF spline driven system where the motor is in the camera and all contact pin/ ultrasonic motor in the lens system.

the D60, D40/D40X dont have the spline drive system so theres a few lenses from the 80's - 90's they cant drive.

The newer AF-I (internal motor) lenses (appx '92 on) obviously are driven by contacts not the spline. so the no doubt all electronic mount that red are designing will not drive the autofocus of probably any nikon AF lens before 1992 ish? ...could be wrong.. its happened before :-)

so, anybody who identified the foremost part of the gunner? to me its a "gun mic". it seems so obvious considering the name, but I can't find any statements on that. I don't get the deal with the sliders but to me it looks like an encased (slide-out?) mic. or is that an already known fact and I missed it? ;)

I hope your correct but I can't read it that way (I have tried)..

(Thinking positively) Maybe they will do it in chunks:

the first 500 get their camera from an option 2 choice then they get thier option 3 camera AS the next 500 get option 2 cameras... This would be good. The option 2 guys get the priority Jim is wanting and early adopters don't end up with an Epic after much much later adopters...

If Epic is a more complicated camera than red (seems so) I assume the it will not fly out of the factory. Without doing it in chunks it could mean a guy with camera (for argument sake) 250 and 251 not receiving a Epic till many many months (maybe over a year) after some guy with camera 4000ish.

Actual as I think through this example I realise that this scenario would probably trouble the Red sensibility so I guess they will find a solution.

kind regards

Hmmm...I'll make some guesses on that:

My guess is that the handle grip on the other side of the Gunner and lens has a powered servozoom unit that interfaces with the lens gears. This servozoom unit functions like the servozoom on a B4 2/3" HD EFP/ENG zoom, with multi-speed zoom rocker lever, start/stop switch, and a lever or button to switch between powered zoom and manual zoom capability. Most of this is on the other side of the render we can't see. The grip for the servozoom portion is the 45 degree handle (lower left side of render), which is adjustable to about any angle you need. This setup enables lightweight run n' gun shooting of motion and stills subjects, in a camera setup with the functionality of an EFP/ENG camera system...in short it is a true next generation hybrid motion and stills setup. This could effectively make any RED Electronic Lens a 3-Way Lens - stills and EFP/Hybrid when used with the Gunner/Servozoom, or manual cine when used without the Gunner/Servozoom unit.

Power and interface to the gunner and servozoom unit is supplied through the two cables that plug into the lower front of the camera. The Gunner houses electronics that help in AF functions - laser rangefinder, etc.

The above is all just purely my own guesses...I have no insider knowledge from RED on this whatsoever. If the above guesses are in any way accurate, I'm a way happy camper :)

Far more elaborate guess than my initial stab at it that did notice the interface with the lens gears. The whole concept, if true would be brilliant. It will certainly make me want to get the first Scarlet out the chute - looks to be the 2/3rds though I just may wait for the S35.

Start up time
They stated under 2 seconds.
Shutter lag
Well consider that it's an entirely digital shutter and that the camera is constantly capturing frames for the viewfinder, whether you hit the shutter or not...
Shutter speed range(min-max)
Also I think they said somewhere on here that the new Reds would support long exposures.
Autofocus (will it hunt in low light it or will it make me happy?)
Will the RAW still format be usable in something like LightRoom?
Still question marks but I wouldn't worry about lightroom support, that's a much smaller technical challenge than what they've already overcome with R3Ds in the past two years.
Right now I have to carry my HPX500, 5DMII, 1DMIII and related gear... my back is getting sore...
Right there with you. I just want one camera at a time. I often handhold my Red with a Red drive and red brick on ET vDocks. Having that functionality right on modules will improve things dramatically.

Jim

sigh... that's true. but you skipped one really important point (while implying that you mentioned that because of the "epiX") : it already was before the announcement of the epic ;)

...

whoops missed that part. sounds really reasonable...

A question: The heat vent on the brain(s) appears to leave the innards open to all the flotsam and jetsam of the atmosphere - dust, sand, smog, cats and dogs. You Red guys seem to think of everything. Please tell me that this wont be a concern.

Jarred said in an earlier post that the venting and intake of the camera is sealed of from the electronics. Also the fans can be changed by the user if it brakes.

The conduit for the fan is contained. As in it is a tunnel through the brain with no access to the innards. Flotsam and jetsam will find no sanctuary in the innards of a DSMC.

On to Jarred's goading:

First the electronic lens is different that the models purposed in the earlier announcement. It is a 24 - something with actual geared ring(S) and vibration control. I hope the iris is can be controlled in at least 1/3 stop increments.

The fact that the focus mark is red only for the one that is on the mark might mean that they light up or simply change color when active. By the by, nice precise witness mark.

And yes it looks like the handle on the other side might give you rocker controls and maybe more.

Is the auto focus able to lock and track a selected point and track focus on that selection.

Jarreds response
... The RED Electronic FF lenses are designed with motion tracking and motion recording as a foundation however, so the performance of those lenses in both motor speed, lens noise, breathing, etc. will far exceed ( we believe ) other electronic lenses on the market...

Is this AF video with face recognition?

With JJ announcing electronic control nikon mount for all scarlets including 2/3
does this mean we can have AF video with nikon lenses on the 2/3 interchangeable?
(while compensating for enormous crop factor)
