  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Well, Robby D has his style and that seems to be the way he likes it or so I've been reading. You can certainly see a lot of post tweakage in Island Fever 3 and 4 along with tons of filtering in much of his other work. I think it's done for the purpose of being artistic. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't but the guy is always willing to do what it takes to get the money shots in his work and he's definitely one of the nicer folks in the business.

Yeah, I figured that out. I am not saying that it's not good (perhaps "cheap" might sound a bit harsh), simply, my opinion is that, if you get a certain kind of gear, you should also match its quality with proper grading etc. Of course, it's not something you HAVE TO (yours the equipment, yours the decisions) and I am sure that movie is definetly going to sell (especially on Blue Ray), so kudos for the people behind it.

Yet, I still see it as a waste of potential...but that's just me.

As far as additional REDs in the adult entertainment industry goes, I've heard rumors that Vivid and Wicked both have access to cameras now but I know there is at least one RED production kit being rented out solely for adult entertainment productions by an adult entertainment post production facility that got their gear at the beginning of the year.

Jarred, I totally commend your decision. We are artists first, and censorship has no place in the arts. It doesn't matter whether it's Robert Mapplethorpe, Andres Serrano or Larry Flynt... we must fight to protect every artist's right to creative expression.

BTW, I'm shooting something that has some nudity in it on a RED, and have been declined the privilege of screening it at a certain forum due to a strict no-nudity requirement. It's kind of breathtaking when you're censored, a little like what Henry Miller must have felt like when Tropic of Cancer was banned.

Anyway, this thread has valuable to me as a filmmaker. By watching the trailer, I could see that blemishes are much more noticeable on one of the actress's butts than shot on SD:

From the footage, I learned quite a bit... I learned that we gotta spend more on makeup! And I learned that I must insist on decent lenses and lighting. Finally, it was reinforced that decent actors, who can actually act... are worth their weight in silver. At least in an indie. Finally, must... find... brilliant... color grading.

In other words, it is only by watching porno's shot with a RED that we can learn how to shoot stuff that does NOT look like a porno.
 
My first thoughts after watching the trailer involved all of the industry's make-up artists protesting about the RED footage's high detail and how they now have to go through hell to mask imperfections...

Joone can you answer about lenses used, lighting and give us a little info on the technical side of the project compared to non RED work?

Also, if you have some dialogue scenes (ie, just a few seconds, nothing to give away the plot (?) or any money shots) in R3D for us to study?

Hahaha - well, that's not just limitated to porn and RED my man. I did a fashion shoot the other day with my EX1 and 720p was already enough to underline all the defects in the skin (as the model wasn't that young anymore).

I actually watched part of this (out of pure curiousity of course...) and have to say that it was some of the worst looking Red footage ever. Subject matter aside, it was poorly lit, out of focus half the time, poorly compressed, and overall didn't even look like it was shot on Red. They could've shot it on a PD150 and I wouldn't have noticed any difference. Sorry Joone, it's certainly a nice porn, but not Red-worthy...

agreed. Watched the trailer and it looks very poor. Why isn't there a market for well made pornography?

Because the men who make the films (and most who watch) don't love women. It too often combines sex-driven disfunctional relationships with violence, control, and demeaning treatment of women. To start, there is nothing beautiful about sex in a porn film.

When was the last time you heard someone sincerely say "I love you" during a sex scene in a porn film? When was the last time you heard someone say "Oh God, I hope I make you pregnant with our beautiful, talented children" when getting of near the end of a sex scene, or call a women a life-creating goddess, more than a few seconds of after-play, or even thank her?

As a result, I am disgusted with nearly all the porn I've ever seen.

Because Hollywood is afraid to dip their dirty little fingers in it. They're scared of getting spanked by the giant Christian Viacom hand.

I'm not old enough to remember, but I think "Hollywood" was a little more liberal a few decades ago.

Is it only me that immediately thought, when reading this...and he must have seen a lot, and keeps watching to hopefully see something redeeming, nothing after hundred's of hours LOL
