  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Should I Buy The RED Scarlet?

If I had $3,000 and I wanted a sweet rig to shoot some videos with, I would buy a Canon 5D MKII and a sweet lens. Unless of course the Scarlet fixed was out, which it's not so it really can't be considered unless this post is transported into the future.

Thanks Aaron for your reply!

I've been checking out the Canon 5D MKII (per your advice) and it does seem like a smoke'n piece of geer indeed! :sifone:

Now I can wait till the Scarlet is out as well. I'm not in a hurry since I'm knee deep in music production at the moment. Like.. if I had to wait 3 to 4 months then shoot that's fine as well.

Just two months ago I worked on a movie set (shooting behind-the-scenes footage) where they used three Canon 5d MkII's to shoot this western being made out here in the Arizona desert. The footage I got to see was pretty darn good. The real test will be when they show it to us on the big screen.

If the Scarlet turns out to be a bit too high in price, I might look into the Canon 5D Mk II. I'm a Nikon person so I might also wait and see if the rumors are true about Nikon coming out with a 1080P DSLR, since I have many Nikon lenses already.

I've been checking out threads on the Canon5D MKII vs. the Panasonic HPX170.

(One guy had this to say.)

"Please review the 100s upon 1000s of music videos that show up on all the music telvision channels
such as MTV and MTV2 everyday, there you'll find
videos shot with the HVX200 and now the HPX170 all day long.

I have so many friends that have tried the Canon route and have failed.
They tried to achieve everything in one simple purchase but fell short ten times over.

Want great looking music videos, look at what some of the pros did with a DVX100 and HVX200 on this forum... you'll loose your mind."

(and another said...)

"You just have to realize that shooting video on the 5D MKII is very limited.
If you can work within its limitations, you can get great stuff but the 170 is
MUCH more flexible and professional as a video tool. In my mind, music videos are
lit with a full crew, usually on a stage so the low light capability of the Canon
wouldn't really benefit you there. Shallow depth of field is useful but overrated
and you can get shallow depth of field with the 170 by using a 35mm adapter."

Of course the guy who posted the thread is now thinking about waiting on the Red!

The Panasonic AG-HPX170 looks nice but to pay over 5k for a camera with a 1/3" sensor...

I would think the Canon5D MKII would workout great shooting music videos. Aren't the bands lipsycing anyway? So you don't need a camera with good sound or sound at all?

Nikon did drop the ball with the D300s... but! I believe it has better built in sound than the Canon 5D. Down the road you add that to Nikon's next release that's a 1080P camera... There you have it! But I'm sure Canon is working on their next camera that will have better sound.

Thanks Russ for your reply!

The Canon 5D MKII still looks good for the money. I'd LOVE to get the RED and hope it comes out soon, but if not, probably in like 3 months or so I want a camera for sure.

As for the music video things... mostly it will be my music I shoot. So yeah... lip sinking will be the norm like shooting the video while I'm listening to a track as I'm walking down the beach, street, or something to keep myself in time with the actual track.

The next thing would be which editing software to get? It would be good to do slow motion and some special effects (nothing real fancy) but a few bells and whistles would be nice.

Isn't if for MAC only?

Yes, Mac only... Then your next option should be Adobe Premiere Pro CS4. I've used the CS3 version and it's pretty nice and easy to use. I'm not crazy about Adobe as a company. They have a bad habit of discontinuing products that they get you hooked on, then they dump it... Don't get me started now :ack2:

Like what?

Photoshop? (Nope)
Flash? (nope)
Premiere? (nope)
AE? (nope)
Dreamweaver? (nope)
Cold Fusion? (nope)
Acrobat? (nope)
Illustrator? (nope)
In Design? (nope)

Big GoLive or Pagemaker fan?

This is another reason to not buy the 5D II; It only shoots 30 frames per second. The HPX170 for example goes up to 60.

As for editing software, I would look at Sony Vegas. It makes it really easy to do anything you can imagine. It can do anything Final Cut can do, but it is a whole lot more intuitive, so unless you use it a whole lot, it is easier to figure out how to do things.

That is ridiculous.

The 5dII has better latitude, better DOF and just a better image than the HPX170.

Hell, I am a Panasonic fan (HPX500 and HVX200) and on image quality alone my 5dMkii KILLS my two Panasonic video cameras.

Thanks Matt! Good points!

Of course I'm a newbie so this is all a new to me (but I like it!)

Jamie

Yep! Golive, PressReady and there was that Flash like app.

I would hardly call 3 apps in like 20 years an epidemic of product turn over. :)

The camera is on the verge of being released. The Scarlets brother Epic is going to be rolled out in one form or another for the next few months. Sometime along the process Scarlet will be released. My personal feeling on timing is to have one by May. But it should clearly state, that is an unofficial estimate by me, who does NOT have any insider info just feeling the pulse of the boards.

Peace.

Last official word on delivery besides the EPIC-S being moved to May '11...

Depending on EPIC orders...

Feb. to begin EPIC-X production and April to begin EPIC-S production. Scarlet right in there somewhere.

That could change depending on a lot of things.

Jim

Jamie,
take a look at the panasonic GH2 aswell.
A bit smaller sensor, so no troe 25mm dof but almost, touch screen focus,...
And it handles video way better then the Canon. The datarates of the Canon video are a joke imho.
