  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

OK. This is basically a stress test from shoot to post.

More or less "no light"

It was also rainy/foggy...

Still a happy puppy, though.

Next up... whatever I finish first, but probably the greenscreen stuff.

Please do requests, but I'm not promissing to comply.

Gunleik,

Concerning requests /

Our Bics ignited we stompt the rafters ..."Stairway to Heaven"!

Joking aside.

I think you are on to something and not to make abrupt transitions thus disenchanting the happy puppy I think keep going with integrating elements as you have begun to do...Does that make any sence?

Basically people places and things together in various combinations so it doesnt become so much science that it kills the romance...I think that is key to your work and experimentaion...And to our responces, it appeals to our desire to believe that there is something more beyond what can simply be measured...An Essence or Soul of things.

Some very nice shots.

What compression settings did you use? It looked sort of blocky, which could just be a matter of the bitrate or chosen codec or whatever.

What ASA?

Was the footage pushed in RAW processing?

I noticed the compression issues, too, will look into it as the issues are in the webcompression.

The ASA/exposure is not pushed beyond 320 in RC

Used the default Compressor settings, limiting bitrate to 5000 (which could be the reason. Usually I think the export with QT converions works better than Compressor, but It would be nice to make compressor work)

The lenses are Superspeeds, mostly wide open... But a pretty beat up set. I think they're T 1.3, and I've read several times that they behave better if you stop'em down, but that wasn't part of this test :)

This is "graded" in the field, thus no proper monitoring...

As to dogday
I'm prep'ing for my first commercial RED shoot next weekend... And then I'm sorta booked for a while, so I just try to do these tests one by one to get my hands wet....

:)

Thanks!

I see a lot of compression artifacts in there, the typical "keyframe every 24 frame" problem and a lot of scaling problems. Also some vertical banding going on. Could you post a 4k jpeg export of every scene?

I can post 2k jpegs (as all post is done from 2k dpx), maybe on Monday.

I'll also check stuff on more proper monitoring.

Have to add, though that all/most crap comes from web-compression...

gunleik,

I'd like to see the sunrise in a graveyard to see how it handles that change in exposures with all the shadows being cast by the headstones. weird I know but you did ask :) LOL

Nice tests,

but I'm looking forward to get "almost" a similar result with "superspeed" STILL lenses like a f1.4 from Leica, Nikkor and Zeiss.

Sanjin. You'll have to post those tests, as I "only" have PL mount...

The subjects @ hand isn't as impressive as the nature shoots, but this was intended as a stress test :)

My Birger EF mount should arrive very soon.

About IMS PST universal mount still waiting for news after NAB.

shimmering shadow noise ? what causes it ?

G ... would be good to know what setting you used for some of the clips ?

I do not shoot much 'dark' stuff but I did run some tests and I did notice the same 'shimmering noise' in the shadow areas.
Vertical banding is clearly visible in the shot of the man selling artwork on the fly-over (at 00:00:50ish).

In my case I stuck with 320ASA and lifted in RedCine but have found the 'shimmering noise' in the shadows quite strong (when compared to the rest of the frame).

Anybody out there (with a housing) tried low light underwater work ? I'm interested to hear if the amount of BLUE makes things worse ?

Perhaps build 16 will come to the rescue ...

It's a good stress test... but I think other cameras deal with underexposure noise better as of build 15. Take a look at these on a better monitor.

There's a lot of noise in these shots that I'm not certain how to correct for (and it's not web compression causing what I'm seeing). There's almost always something underexposed in any shot. You can't really light it up most of these shots. You should be able to go out at night and get a relatively clean result despite things being underexposed.

Take a look at the mythbusters video. Sorry to say, but it's noisy as hell and I personally never would have let it out of the office. But that's me. The camera on Ted is so far gone they tried to save it by crushing it so far that the idea of matching both cameras was probably out of the question. And that was LIT. The final shot in that episode reveals the true state of what that camera got on the big screen.

But then I watch something like that "feel my pain" video and it looks really, really good. That was build 7. It seems like somewhere RED actually picked up noise and you start hearing people talk about it. Like when they tried to stretch the exposure latitude they actually revealed noise. Give me 8 clean stops instead.

I'm hoping build 16 is all about cleaning this up. Jim has said RedCode is being rewritten from the ground up. If they get clean underexposure going then it'll be much easier to shoot and process things. And it'll truly be the killer camera it is.

I will do a proper monitoring when I get back, I should maybe pull this untill then...

But all of these shots are underexposed in one way or the other, deliberately so. Which other cameras perform better?

(Just curious here, not inquisitory voice...)

I did say "I think", right? I need test more precisely to be fair. But I've seen some pretty clean cameras. I'm also waiting for build 16 for that test. RED is somehow capable of smooth underexposed areas because I believe we've seen it.

Sounds good. Thanks for doing that.

Compression sucks - no doubt about it. And it just doesn't give people a clear picture of what's possible with the RED. Compression techniques is a field of it's own and I'm looking forward to do a lot of low light and motion tests when I get my RED. I'm planning a motorcycle mount for it :red_bandana:

Ah... you're talking about other REDs? :)

When you're talking about "8 clean stops" I have to disagree...

In these shots there's really so little light that you basically would not have any image (@ least on the dude on the bridge) without quite a good DR. I'm sorta happy actually. Haven't been able to pull these kind of shots out of the mud with anything else I've used.

For quite a few of these shots, the 1600 asa setting was needed to even see anything on the preview. Still they've been developed in RC @ nothing more (and sometimes less) than 320 asa.

Most/all are wide open @ T 1.3

As far as I remember, the shutter was 1/48, but I have a bad short time memory. (Graeme, whisky, cigarettes... You know...)

as far as mythbusters go, this is not the main thing I'll be showing clients on a demo, but I like the idea. It's cool to show that you can work with it (easier) than P2, but it doesn't really give the clients an ideoa of the strenngth of the format...

Don't you have your own cam to do that test with? -:)

Like the idea, though...

Ah, well there are a lot of variables there so just keep playing around and so will I :-)

So far I haven't been precise enough in my tests to really say much with confidence (other than that I can get some really stunning stuff out of the camera). I enjoy all your posts here Gunleik. Great attitude and keep up the good work! This stuff is fun no matter what.
