Should I Buy The RED Scarlet?

first post

first post

Last official word on delivery besides the EPIC-S being moved to May '11...

This is my first post here. I'm looking to upgrade from my 7d/5d stuff to the scarlet. I sent an email to RED asking the them if they had a time frame for the fixed lens scarlet. the response I got was "...do not have an exact release date. However, our best ESTIMATE is early next year." So the time frame might have changed. I hope not though!
Hope this helps the discussion and please excuse me if it's not appropriate here.

When did you ask the RED team? Last year ?

Also they get very mad when people post details of private correspondence in a public forum

Jamie,
take a look at the panasonic GH2 aswell.
A bit smaller sensor, so no troe 25mm dof but almost, touch screen focus,...
And it handles video way better then the Canon. The datarates of the Canon video are a joke imho.

If you can get a GH2 (it's just now being released), it's a great buy. I just got one a few weeks ago (my local camera store shockingly had one in stock when I called). It's pretty universally regarded as the best all around value for stills and video at $800 body only or $1,500 with the video optimized 14-140 mm lens. It's kind of small, but it packs a hell of a punch electronically. And Panasonic is coming out with more video optimized lenses for it, supposedly. I bought it with the 14-140mm lens (which is pretty slow at f4-5.6 but has IBIS and and amazingly fast silent autofocus for a contrast detection autofocus system) and also picked up the 20mm/f1.7. With the GH2's good low light performance, the 20 mm lens can be used in very low light situations.

It also has a neat "tele-extend" feature where it reads only the middle 1920x1080 pixels in the 18mp sensor (versus downrezzing the full sensor down to 1920x1080), giving you an extra 2.6 zoom factor. Combine that with the 14-140 mm lens (equivalent to 280 mm full frame), and the darn thing ends up "coming with" the equivalent of a 728 mm telephoto lens for video. I was in Yellowstone for the holidays and got some nice wildlife video with the thing. Wish I'd brought a tripod.

Anyway, it's a great little camera to occupy me until Scarlet arrives.

Hey Folks,

Can it be confirmed that the fixed lens on the Scarlet will be the reported 14-140 lens and the specific specs for it ie. Number of elements, Type of glass and coatings, Max-min (fixed) Apature ect? As well as the Over and Under on the changes the fix lens (mount) will be adaptable to the RED,PL, Nikon or Canon lens mounts?

It's the GH2 that has a 14-140 mm micro four-thirds lens (FF equivalent to 28-280 mm).

Scarlet's 8x lens is reported to be FF35 Equivalent of 28mm-224mm.

Hello Job, when I said that the lens on the Scarlet would be similar to the one on the GH1/2 I was strictly referring to DOF characteristics.
