Acceptable usernames are:
Full Name (First and last, or first, middle, last, etc, etc)
First initial and Last Name
First Name and Last inititial.

That's cool they respect our privacy by allowing just your last name initial. I'm not famous just want to be google proof.

Hello,

my username is my real first name. Do I have to modify it including also my last name?
Thanks and greetings

Lorenzo Barichella

Sally Shamas is my real name , but may i ask why ?!?

I tried to update my name within the edit profile section, but it is only for changing email and password. How can I change it?

I don't see an explanation from RED that tells us why this is needed. Why this and why now? Can't (and I know nothing about forum administration) you simply set up some system where we include our real names in our profile and then choose to hide these from the public but make them available to the admins?

Also don't RED already know who I am based on my email registration details that I confirmed when I first signed up.

I love these forums but can't see any justification for use of real names instead of the system we currently have. No other forum I use needs me to use my real name and I've never had a problem.

Just trying to understand the justification.

I think it might have something to do with your parents.

Joking aside I agree that privacy is important. Is there not a way to keep nicknames but have real names on the account that only RED can see?

Come June 1st I shall be shutting down my account as I disagree with this policy. I'll just be reading posts instead but the unfortunate thing about that is that I shall not be able to see picture attachments. Never mind.

My guess is it's a corporate thing. Competition logging on and trashing the RED name perhaps in subtle and not so subtle ways? Still the 'true' members shouldn't suffer because of that.

All those arguments have been brought forward many moons ago.

If you are that worried about privacy, you shouldn't be using the Internet at all. Besides, use your full first name and the initial from the last one.

Time to accept and move on.

Everyone of these DP's clients will now be able to google thier name and read a post that says something like "how do I shoot this" or "my Red keeps shuting down" it doesn't give your client a lot of confidence in your skills or camera.

Well, why should clients or potential clients of such DPs be kept away from such information? If a DP needs to fools his clients or potential clients, it's only his fault. It is only fair if and there is nothing bad about a DP sking a technicla question. Some DPs have plenty of chance for showing how bad they are by showing how artistically poor and full of silly prejudices they are, and when they load their websites and movies with their miserable clichès and meaningless results anyway. Not only when they talk to anybody privately they have plenty of chance to expose their thought.
That's much worse and on that basis they be leaded away from jobs by their clients. If clients don't like them they won't get the job anyway. Their results and global reputation a a person can harm him much more than a honest question or claims like "how do I shoot this" or "my Red keeps shuting down"
It's not much a clients business if a DP's own Red Camera shuts down. If he's a good, and HONEST DP, he'll rightly say: the format is excellent, and possibly one of the best; I have his kind of experience with it." He'll just omit saying his very own has that problem, since he'll do the right thing and suggest to rent the camera from someone instead of using his own.
Or will he be so stupid to try fool his client and risk to have problems on the set???????
Because if that's the case, then he's not an honest an reliable DP and he does deserve to be exposed as he is.

I agree that privacy is of the most importance, but then you are not going to tell the world what you think about your neighbor on Reduser.net. Here you almost only talk about the camera and other tools, cinema, and movies. You build your reputation over time and by your results and by what you say. So a DP should not say stupid things anyway.
Who's got something to hide even about such topics?
Please let me reply 4 times:
Who's got something to hide?
Who's got something to hide?

Are you afraid of someone looking for you with google and get here discovering that that day you fall off into a 300000 watt light? So what? It can happen to every one.
People would pay to be seen on tv and exhibit their lowest just to become famous, so what's the problem.
Only impostors have something to hide.

Real names on the bottom of the post are not ok, unless you are a sponsor who may use company names as usernames and their real name in the signature.

If you have a fake name Contact Jason@landmine.tv to update your username, so you can keep all your old posts and not need to make a new account.

Christian Edwards may of PM'd many of you already with a warning, he will be going in to lock those unmodified accounts come June 1st, and randomly going through and blocking out fake names as he has time.

I've sent my name change 8 times by now but heard nothing except for this notice?

Tetsuo,

There is nothing wrong with asking questions, I'm all for it, it's how clients and others can interpret those questions that can cause some big problems. Imagine trying to raise $500k for your first feature and your investors googled you and didn't like the responses to questions you had from others and decide to pull the plug on you because of it. Or your client who was paying you $3,500 a day just figured out how to do it himself for cheaper etc. Hundreds of reasons why it can come back to haunt someone.

I think this pretty much ended when Jason said we can use our first name and last initial so it's no longer an issue.

All is good!

If you are that worried about privacy, you shouldn't be using the Internet at all.

So those who are worried about privacy shouldn't be using the internet? Strange logic. ALWAYS be worried about privacy. In this day and age information is abused on a regular basis. Anybody who does not keep an eye on these issues is a fool. Society is becoming entrenched in data management values and we need to realise that. You are assessed by the data you put out into the world and that can be a very false picture and open to stupid interpretations.

And to those who shout loudest that those who worry about privacy have something to hide, well yes I have something to hide. My private life...is...exactly....that. Private. Is that bad? When are people going to learn that when you allow orgs and governing bodies complete freedom to look into your private information it is abused...every time, without fail. Jeez, learn from history why don't you?

But that's more of a general issue and doesn't necessarily apply to the reduser question. The issue to me is clear. Can I voice my opinion without fear of reprisal or abuse? When my real name is attached other dangers suddenly become real too. Business can be affected as well as personal stuff. I don't mind attaching my real name to my posts but I see the enforcement of it the thin end of a dodgy wedge.

My name is Jonathon Sendall

Not that I'm too bothered, but why not have a rule that real name has to be in the signature?

I'm not sure what is driving this and ultimately what Red is trying to accomplish, but it certainly seems a little absurd to me.

How is Red going to verify that the name I give them is my real name? (or for that matter how will they verify that my parents didn't hate me and my first name really isn't "Green"!)

Jarred.
Maybe you should close this forum and leave it as is with only its "search" options (which are not so great),
Then open a new clean forum with new rules.
After all you Red used this forum as a marketing tool and set its rules for that. It is not fair to come now to people and tell them they have to expose themselves after allowing them for quite a while not to/

Would it make any sense to have one "bogus" name allowed to post .... perhaps under "anonymous" or "guest" ..... or "troll" ....

Yes, that was based on prior posts by Jarred. He may need to amend or clarify... Definitely First initial and Last name will be ok, though First name last initial... Jarred may want to step in and be the final word on that for you guys.

Oh... and I have over 700 of these as I type (I'm sure with many more on the way)... So please don't hound me asking why i haven't changed it yet... :) I will try my very best to get everyone done a day early or so, that way anyone who has sent me a request either via pm or email will have the opportunity to know if I did indeed miss them or not.

later.
