  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Birger Lens Mount Reservations

Jim wasn't in the thread I'm referring to. There are some PL mount guys that continually argue that SLR lenses aren't practical to be used in professional productions. I think their definition of "pro" somehow includes PL in the definition. My definition of "pro" is anything that looks professionally done regardless of the gear used.

Those aren't two related statements, Joelnet...I was movin' on to the mystery of the ET mount.

But since you bring it up: what happened on that thread was that someone claimed that the quality of Arri Master Primes was overstated and that cine lens users were elitist. An unfortunately divisive discussion ensued, as typically happens when ungrounded accusations of elitism are promiscuously flung about.

The discussion wasn't about whether PL versus SLR are "pro" enough or not, although there was discussion and differing opinions about whether they are equally suitable to all applications.

The majority of the folks on that thread either use/ or plan to use/ or are open to using both types of lenses, so it was really somewhat of a non-discussion...I just feel cautious about having that discussion characterized as a division along the lines of PL v. SLR people - it really wasn't. The division was more of a clash of personalities rather than a clear disagreement about which type of lenses are superior...

I just wouldn't bother recapitulating that vibe, it's destructive...which is why I was trying to steer you away from that representation, so we can all be more constructive in how we talk about lenses than that thread was.

The proof is in the pudding, in the quality of the footage that you shoot and the quality stories that you tell, period. Lens is just a means to an end. And something pretty for your collection.

Looking for advice on wide angle lenses.

Looking for advice on wide angle lenses.

I need a wide angle (rectilinear) lens for use on my Birger mount (whenever it shows up damn it). My experience is shooting with "full frame" lenses. I own most of the Canon L-series primes and zooms. I have no experience shooting with EF-S (APS-C coverage) lenses. Alas I need something wider than 18mm and sadly, I can not afford an ARRI 8R. My thoughts so far are:

Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM
Tokina AT-X 116 PRO DX AF 11-16mm f/2.8
Canon EF 14mm f/2.8 II USM
Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8 II USM (which I already own)

I need to keep the rig as light as possible so I won't be using a mattebox with this set-up. I need to know if the APS-C lenses will vignette with an ND filter screwed on the front.

Anyone with experience shooting with the Canon 10-22mm or Tokina 11-16mm please chime in and maybe post some wide end and wide open images.

Thanks

I just got off the phone with Erik. He said there are quite a few mounts going out today, and that they will be rolling out even more over the next couple of days.

He sounded like he was in good spirits and asked me to relay the message that he will be giving an update as soon as possible, and to be patient and let them focus on getting mounts out until then. He did also mention that things are going well with fixing lens support for lenses such as the 85mm 1.2. He also said that the mac application is now fully functional, and working better than the original PC version. Exciting stuff! Hang in there everybody!

Did he say how much is "quite a few mounts"?

Got a message mine 107.260438 #54 will be shipping today as well. Great!

Got now also the Fedex tracking number -it gets even better.

Glen,

Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM -- I chose this option for myself.

Tokina AT-X 116 PRO DX AF 11-16mm f/2.8 -- Nice lens but only a 5mm zoom range is very limiting. Having F/2.8 is great however the one lens I tried was not quite as sharp as the best 10-22mm wide open (out of 3 new lenses). It was very even across the frame however and if you get a sharp one this is a good lens that will fit in nicely with your 16-35mm.

Canon EF 14mm f/2.8 II USM -- Too expensive for only a little wider than your 16-35mm and very, very hard to filter without a mattebox

I need to keep the rig as light as possible so I won't be using a mattebox with this set-up. I need to know if the APS-C lenses will vignette with an ND filter screwed on the front. -- Standardize using Series 9 filters and get rings for each lens. That will allow for 2-3 filters on any of the above except the 14mm which has no threads on front.

Here's some quick tests of the L series lenses. They were provided my my friend Tom Raymond. A first rate still photographer http://www.freshairphoto.com/flash.html who has about 10 or 12 of the lenses I desire. He was heading out tomorrow for a couple weeks, so I tested the lenses without collimating the Birger mount.
It still worked beautifully.

I tested 4 lenses (shown) but did not include the tilt shift. It is designed mainly for architectural applications.

This was shot in a small corner of the studio (shown) with natural light only. The window was built for that purpose.

As we know, the 85mm 1.2 prime is not controlled yet. I set it with a 5D and was able to adjust focus by dollying the tripod a few inches. You can see the difference in DOF with the 1.2 ND added. This is a great lens and I hope the control issue can be resolved.

The stills appear softer that the video. I will try to get the QT files up tomorrow.

My thanks to Randy and Tamara for the impromptu modeling.

I hope to test more in the days to come.

Thanks for the pics. :)

Is the 2nd shot 85mm 1.2? The third shot looks like it, but the 2nd doesn't.

The last two were both from the 85mm. the last had shallow DOF because of the added ND.
I'm not sure where the iris was set on the two 85mm shots. I should have noted it from the 5D. My bad.

no prob. at first i thought it might have been a 50 or a smaller aperture on the 85. the reason i even wanted to be sure is that I've been really curious about the 85 and if i really need it because i already have the 70-200 L. i think me wanting the 85 too is just lens lust. :)

I keep thinking F/1.2 on a 85mm sounds really, really shallow for moving images. A nice F1.4 would be plenty. A manual focus Nikon 85mm 1.4 (with EF adapter) might be a good way to go. I've got an 85mm 1.8 Nikon AF lens now. Works well, but focus is touchy because it's AF so I'm thinking of replacing that.

Same situation here and I bought the Tokina. Crucial factors: I own the 16-35 so no need for anything >16mm; f/2.8 throughout zoom range; I compared several images from the Tokina with the 10-22mm and the Tokina was sharper both in the middle and in the corners and vigenetted less (it is easier to build a lens with a 5mm zoom range); the EF 14mm is not wide enough and hard to filter.

who can we believe?

You guys talking about lenses - how about starting a new thread entitled "lenses for the Birger mount" or something. This thread is already messy/bloated/overloaded as it is.

Lets keep this thread to discussions about the physical lens mount and pancakes.

As to pancakes, obviously (and scientifically proven in multiple independent international tests) pancakes are best with: Nutella, vanilla sauce, mashed apples, French apricot jam, sugar&lemon or indeed blueberries.

As to reservations, does anyone keep track on who is the highest reservation holder to have received a mount, and who is lowest not to?

Making me hungry.
