  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Komodo-X

Hello,
I arrived a little unexpectedly here, and I haven't followed the discussion entirely,
But I would like to know if there is an upgrade path planned for Komodo owners to switch to Komodo-X ?

For me, the main reason for this would be to use the DSMC3 monitor, which is likely compatible with Komodo-X, and not have to worry about breaking the SDI output anymore. I'm a bit disappointed that there are so few accessories created for the Pogo outputs on Komodo, and I share Andrew's confusion.

If you have any information on this, it would be appreciated !

Have a great day !

no there isn't

BHphotovideo lists the BLACK version of the Komodo-X at the same price as the STORMTROOPER at $ 9,995, I would have thought that it would've been lower. Maybe they left the price the same until they know the actual price?

Jarred already said on Scott Balkum's live stream that there would be no difference in price between the ST and the ordinary black version.

Thanks Jon! I didn't watch all of any of the Live Streams so I guess I missed it.

sure thing, Rand! He also implied there was a good chance the OG Komodo price would increase if I recall correctly.

You can listen to Jarred talk about the price of the black KX here.

I get the feeling that the Komodo-X is a stopgap camera. That’s why the Komodo Mk2 is taking more time to release.

Thanks again Jon!

at the 1:58:10 or so mark in the video.

Sometimes I also just make things up with no insight or information.

It’s deduction my dear Watson. What do you imagine Komodo 2 will have over Komodo? If Red makes it larger it will no longer be ideal for drone use and many tight mounting locations. But Red will need to do something to set it apart. They can’t reuse the sensor that’s in Komodo-X… that sensor is to power hungry for Komodo. So what does that leave? Hmmm? Maybe some real innovation? Hence, the feeling that Komodo-X is a stopgap camera.

Honestly, I don't see a mk2 coming until Bay or Gunn asks for an 8k variant for a specific project...
and even then, it'd probably have to be more "action-geared".

Funny to see you here Jon, considering you were pretty adamant that Red wasn’t releasing another Komodo body anytime soon

Odds are you don’t even remember, but I think an “I told you so” is warranted

Funny to see you taking time out of your busy day to spread fake news.

Hard to say what the future holds, but I think the way it's developing is:
- Raptor Class bodies = 8K minimum 120fps
- Komodo/Komodo-X = 6K

If RED goes beyond 8K, likely a new name. Maybe a bigger lizard or critter.

BUT. What I do think is kind of cool, considering the history of all things, is the concept of X is back in play. At least for Komodo today, but had relevance across Mysterium and Dragon sensor tech and bodies.

Maybe something smaller makes more sense… Komodo was supposed to be a crash cam… perhaps it’s time for the Red Iguania?
