  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

ARRI 4K Super 35 Camera Will be Launched Next Month

Rand,

Have they made available any of these Alexa 35 videos in HDR ?

Tom,

I don't think so from ARRI. But the youtuber below transformed one of the ARRI Alexa 35 ARRI Raw files into 2100 HLG in Final Cut. I still don't think Davinci Resolve supports the NEW .MXF file wrappers for ARRI Raw or Pro Res yet, at least I have not been able to successfully import any of the clips into Resolve 18 beta 5 yet.

On the FTP you'll find MP4 and MOV in SDR as well as the newer flavor of ARRIRAW wrapped in MXF. You need ARRI's permission for the prerelease SDK, same for prior to the launch, but sounds like Resolve might have a beta version as early as July, when in there I do not know. I'm pretty sure the current LogC4 LUTs are going to be final for initial release, but I have subtle notes which have been also popping up on various more color oriented boards as well.

ARRI also has "ART" and there will apparently be a full version of something more significant down the line.

For those unaware about the new ARRIRAW, data rates are very slightly higher to significantly higher at higher FPS and I have updated my framesToDataRate tool at phfxtools.com to support it.

Back to work I go.

Phil Thanks Again as Always! Yeah, I keep hoping everyday for a new Resolve Beta or Final version that supports the Alexa 35 footage. The Youtuber I posted about in my previous post above "States" that he was able to use an ARRIRAW file and convert to BT.2100 HLG in Final Cut Pro. I didn't see any of the .Mov or .MP4 files but I'm probably not looking in the right place on the server.

I found the .Mp4 and .MOV files. Thanks PHIL!

I wish the ARRIRAW .MXF files worked in Resolve 18 Beta 5 but here are some graded .mov and .mp4 Alexa 35 files

Here is a link to I believe are all of the .Mov and Mp4 FILES that were included along with the ARRIRAW .MXF files for those who didn't want to deal with getting it from a server.

The link is good for 7 days!!

ARRI REFERENCE TOOL CONTROLS-If You Never Used The ARRI RAW Converter Before.

1) After you imported the ARRIRAW files you can first do some basic corrections Like Exposure, White Balance, Temp, Cropping , Desqueezing and Aspect Ratios with the "IMAGE PROCESSING CONTROLS"

2) After you have done everything you want to do in the IMAGE PROCESSING tool, You can choose the ODT (OUTPUT DISPLAY TRANSFORM) you want to export a PRORES Transcoded file out as or no ODT at all.

TEST IN RESOLVE 18 BETA 5

I exported out an ALEXA 35 ARRIRAW .MXF file out of the ARRI REFERENCE TOOL as a PRORES 4444XQ in LOGC4 File. I then set up a DAVINCI YRGB "ARRI ALEXA V3/ ARRI LOGC"TIMELINE COLOR SPACE and a "REC709/ GAMMA 2.4" OUTPUT COLOR SPACE project. Finally I added a "ARRI_LOGC4 to GAMMA24_REC709-D65_V1-65" Lut to the last node and got the results below. I was expecting the LOGC4 to REC709 transform Lut to make the image look a little wonky since Resolve still only has an ARRI ALEXA V3 not ARRI ALEXA V4 Input Color Space but....

Short 16-bit TIFF sequence exported out of RESOLVE 18 beta 5 as REC709 Gamma 2.4 then I chose one TIFF and saved it again as a JPEG file.

Just had a play with some of the Alexa 35 ArriRAW files in DaVinci Resolve (unreleased build). The latitude is next level. Honestly, in a very challenging scene… even with a grade that would make other cameras cry, it just holds up. It’s taken everything I can throw at it. The footage just doesn’t break. I’m floored by just how robust this footage is. Absolutely next level.

Han,

Yeah, it does hold up pretty good. I think when ARRI LOGC4 is implemented in Resolve and other NLEs fully then you will see what it can really do

I Tried another test this time with a Person in the shot, same workflow as before.

The prerelease version of Resolve I’m using has the new Arri LogC4… That’s what I’m talking about.

OHH!! What Version do you have? In Davinci Resolve 18 beta 5 on Windows there's only ALEXA V3

It’s a dev version of 17.4 from Arri.

Hans,

Do you have a link to that Version? I'm kinda unsure if I want to go back that far back also just for ARRI LOGC4. Maybe as PHIL stated, it will be in an upcoming release of Resolve 18 beta/final version.

That won't be happening unless ARRI publicly releases it. It is a invite only beta right now, meaning you need permission. This camera is still not released yet. Though they pushed out some test footage to punch around with in ART.

I have it, but personally at this point I'd wait for the beta release coming to Resolve 18 for numerous reasons.

Thanks for the Heads Up Phil! What do you think of the Camera from what you've seen using ARRI LOGC4?

Sorry, it’s an internal dev build, so not something that can be shared publicly. As the camera is already announced, I would imagine that the public release version will be coming shortly.
