ARRI 4K Super 35 Camera Will be Launched Next Month

Karim,

I think ARRI believes they have the perfect resolution/ pixel size already but who knows what's possible.

How can the ALEXA 35 achieve 17-stops of dynamic range?

by REDSHARK

from the article.

"Modern cameras almost invariably use some degree of digital noise reduction, although alternative terminology may be employed to soften the blow."

I've never heard that RED uses "some degree of digital noise reduction". 4.6k with noise reduction shouldn't even get an MTF of 4k... how can they clame 4k? Who cares though?

Patrick,

I have nothing but the utmost respect and admiration for everything Red has achieved and meant to this industry. But just because they didn't say that they used noise reduction doesn't mean that they didn't. I think if any of us could really see the actual RAW signal image and compared it to the actual "Raw" that was recorded to the Media storage from the camera and what we see in our respective NLE's, that we would have to conclude that some level of noise reduction was initiated in-camera.

I think you might be assuming that the Noise reduction in the Alexa 35 actually happened at the 4.6K resolution. Maybe the 4.6K resolution they quote is the derivative of what remained after noise reduction from a possible 5K+ actual resolution Alexa 35 sensor.

I think if you can afford $70,000+ for a camera, you'll also have a lot o' dough for camera cards and backup drives.

Certainly true but it's not just a matter of costs but also how often you have to swap cards then during a shoot.

ARRI ALEXA 35 SAMPLE FOOTAGE TECHNICAL INFORMATION

I checked the FTP server and didn't see any ALEXA 35 footage on the server yet only the previously existing models. But it will probably eventually show up like the LogC4 Tranform LUTs did a few days after the original link was posted in the Alexa 35 workflow PDF

The upload last Friday was corrupt, they are working on getting it re-uploaded.

If it's the same exact upload, sample footage is specific shots from the Encounters films, 80GB, 26 shots. I'm certain they'll have some other material uploaded at some point as well.

At the moment you'll need permission from Arri to get the SDK for various applications, but I would expect that to change shortly.

Phil Thanks for that info!! The PDF was released on the 23rd .of this month. So I was wondering why the files might have been available around the 23rd and not now, and you just explained why.

I realize that LOGC4 needs to be supported in all of the different NLEs for any of the LOGC4 Transform LUTS to do justice to how 17-Stops of dynamic range actual looks. But I just wanted to do the best I could with the sample footage by whatever workflow necessary until LOGC4 is supported to get an idea of the practical implications of this camera.

Thanks again

Here are the folders expanded so that you know which ENCOUNTER Video Files you want to Download. I couldn't initially tell just by the Country from which they came from personally.
