  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

We were always told that everything was subject to change. They could have really exploited us. Instead, we get to shoot 4K at this price. It's dirt cheap, even when you add everything else on. I am very, very happy. Projects that were impossible last year, will be affordable this year. I thought it would take another decade for this to happen. Thanks to all at Red. (And if that lens on the camera is a Red prime, things will get even better.)

Funny thing about that. I spoke with a Kodak rep a couple years ago and they told me it would be 10 years before a digital camera could compete with film. They were coming off a HUGE year with a couple films shooting over a million feet.

A year later RED got announced.
 
Its pretty amazing that every single piece of Kit RED is making is (arguably) better than the competition, yet is dramatically underpricing pretty much everyone out there.

Im glad RED didn't cheap out on making crappy product just to hit a price point that a "prosumer" may be used to.

Once you guys hold this stuff.. your will realize how incredible the pricing is. The EVF alone is a work of art.

Any idea if the EVF still has a partially carbon fiber made housing?
 
Just to bring all the $$$ issues into perspective does anyone remember about 16 montha ago when there was all the speculation about Red costing 200K?

Speaking of that, I searched the forums but couldn't find any specifics regarding the materials being used for the camera housing. Also, it looks like there's carbon fiber going on in the Red Rail pics. Did I miss a post about the materials or are they secret for the time being?

I still remember when the Red website first went up with the funny car pics and nearly everyone was sensing a fake. Ah what a turnaround!
 
ill give you a hint.. RED isn't getting any volume discounts on plastic.
 
I dont need to by any RED stuff, but I am so far more stoked now, than I ever was on the very real begining in 2005 ... THANK FOR THIS RED REBELLION!

... just cant wait to play in post with any RED footage
 
Those with AB batterys should know there is a relatively inexpensive adapter from V mount to AB. assuming the V mount on red is standard at the top where this adapter folds over and screws down, We should be able to adapt our existing batterys.
 
Shawn, seriously, in all due respect,you have to admit what is being presented is quite an amazing package. Sure, it's not exactly what they said and if you were to hold them to it, I suppose you could argue that they should throw in the LCD and battery with the system. But I think they realized that people would rather have the option of choosing other accessories and this allowance does that. I actually think it's quite brilliant, and I have to say that if this camera turns out images that are as incredible as the marketing, community building, and revolutionary way of doing business that Red has embarked on, this will force a new pricing structure in the industry. The whole thing is a lot more affordable than I thought it would be. I'll still have to sell my third kidney to afford it, but it's looking like a much sweeter deal right about now.

I can understand for those coming from a prosumer world that these prices, as low as they are still seem intimidating. That's okay. I think this is where those two worlds start to come together and it becomes more about what you do with the tools than what you can afford to do. 25K is not a drop in the bucket for most of us. It's real money. But sit back and think of what you'll be able to do with it. Most of us would still be running around with DV cameras, maybe an HVX, but for what you are about to get, you should be able to achieve far more than you would would that DV camera.

So, let's all pause, think of the possibilitites, and look forward to NAB, where all of the hard work of the Red team and the optimism of the Red community come together, hopefully for a very positive and perhaps historical event.
