  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

$1299 Seiki UHDTV 50" SE50UY04 - Bought it today

Hmm, just a thought for engineers here. If the screen is going to display a full range of colors the display supports in some mode (709 or wide gamut setting) then can calibration and mapping be done in the video card and mapped onto the TV's range?
 
Changed my mind and ordered the swedish version of the seiki 50", same screen but named Andersson.

So how do I get 4k from my powerbook to the screen?

Alos if I want to playback r3d files is it possible to connect to the dual SDI out from the redrocket, (we got a M-logic TB rocket enclosure)...

Is it possible to put proress proxy or H.264 4k files on a memory stick stick it straight into the screen and playback straight from the usb stick?

What graphics card is recomended if I want to use it with a macpro?

Will definitely run some tests soon as we get it. But I though there was a bunch of people here that allready used it. If so please share how you hooked it up, what files you think looks the best to play on it etc.

For example what SDI (from red rocket) to HDMI box is possible to use?
 
I have been talking to BlackMagic - but just tech suport - no contacts unlike some of the RedUsers ;)
Thinking about MBP 17 running Lion or upgrading to Mavericks connected via ThunderBolt to Ultrastudio4K and then via hdmi 1.4 to Seiki 50"
Anybody doing something like that now? BlackMagic apparently has a Seiki they use for tradeshows so probably it works - but would like confirmation.
Anybody know if latest redcinex (and UltraStudio 4K) have issues with Mavericks
Would be nice if 4K existed with MAvericks - but I am guessing only if there is killer graphics card in the Mac.

No way to get 4K out of a PowerBook, but from a MacBook Pro retina (original or latest version) running OS X 10.9 Mavericks you can output a 30Hz UHD signal over HDMI to the Seiki 50" TV. There is no built-in media player in the Seiki, it can only display UHD/4K JPEG images from USB, not videos. For your Mac Pro, go with a graphics card that has an HDMI 1.4a output and officially supports 4K output over a single HDMI. There are one or two Mac compatible ones available. Also, you'll want a fast SSD to playback uncompressed 4K video.

Well not totally true there. Yes I think not possible from a 'powerbook' because your talking pre-intel mac's (although probably could do it at 18hz). This is of course assuming powerbook wasn't used by habit and he didn't mean to say macbook as I would be surprised anyone with an old powerPC laptop would even want to run a 4k display? Anyway, any macbook with a thunderbolt port should be able to run it just fine with this adapter:

That is actually the only way I have ran my 50 inch seiki at 30hz 4k off my mac book pro retina as I am running an old version (lion) that originally came with my macbook and I have no plans to upgrade nor was able to get the custom modes working with tom's hdmi hack for mac's.
 
Thanks, I meant macbook pro. Powerbook was long time ago I know.... But how about my macbook air with TB out port would that be able to play. Guess I can have the files to be displayed on a rad TB disk and then go from TB to HDMI or?

Not sure...maybe with Mavericks and the right mini display port to hdmi adapter it may work. I've only tested with the retina MacBook Pro using discrete graphics.
 
Not to post in the wrong thread, but also not eager to start a new thread for this.
Anyone looked at this? Versus redray and other 4K players? They seem to be seiki partner.

Mitsubishi droppped LaserVue and now the Necsel Laser Cavity fallas under Ushio, who has been working with Christie for 4 & 8K DMD projectors, as well as Barco, demonstrating at IBC 2012. I believe they could achieve 92% fill factor, and stacked RGB.
 
As far as the Nuvola units, Nanotech realizes the shortcomings of HDMI & TCon on the Seiki side, and I made them aware of some changing tcon boards, and also getting around the 6.2.4 issue by using DP to HDMI path.
Also concerning the 24Hz to 25Hz judder, I found this http://blogs.valvesoftware.com/abrash/down-the-vr-rabbit-hole-fixing-judder yet I am using the Seiki as a computer monitor, working on 10bpc aspects.
 
An update on my 50" seiki that I received yesterday:
2011 macbookpro17 fresh mavericks install -thunderbolt to apple store display port / hdmi adaptor to seiki 1.4 cable and tv - 1080p max res :(
tried display port/ with cable adaptor to hdmi and hdmi port - does not seem to output hdmi 1.4 ?
could poster with macpro retina that had this working specify exact model #s for adaptors used?
also several people have claimed they can play 4k images off USB on seiki - not quite accurate - the 4k is not rendered 1:1
i put super high quality 3840x2160 center cut of perfect 5dmk3 fashion model (no color correction, natural light perfect exposure and focus) and it looks very bad in seiki - seems to have been down sampled and then upscaled or poorly dithered.
so looks like ultrastudio4k might be only way to get real 4k - but blackmagic won't guarantee it will actually work with mavericks and seiki :( anybody tried straight thunderbolt ultrastudio 4k to seiki via hdmi 1.4?
not looking for sgi broadcast configuration

There was some compatibility problems with the display link to HDMI a few years ago Mike, I think resolution limitation too. See macrumors for articles.
 
My MacBook Pro retina has an HDMI port and Mavericks enables 3840x2160p at up to 30HZ on the Seiki and many other 4K/UHD TVs. Very few of the Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapters support 4K, but earlier in this thread there are links to one or two that do.

I skimmed torugh this thread again but not sure I found the right one.

So we now try with a macbook with build in HDMI out. That should work according to above. We just need maverick to be installed, waiting for that as we speak.

Then I would like to run it of a mac air using the TB port, is that possible and if so what TB to HDMI devices should I get...?
 
Got our "Anderson" (swedish rebranded Sieki) upp and running. Basically 25p 4k is a no go on this unit. It's stuttering like you would expect. 4k 30fps played back form a macbook retina straight out from the HDMI port looks pretty freaking amazing. Hate 30p but for the price it goes for I think this monitor will get to stay atleast for a little bit. I will porbably sell a few of these to clients that will use them as in store displays. Then working in 30p is not much of a obstacle.
 
Good idea Bjorn. There are signage mini PC's, very smaller, even smaller than Mac mini (Aopen, Asus or one of those) but the new 4k android media players might do.
