  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

$1299 Seiki UHDTV 50" SE50UY04 - Bought it today

Isn't there a displayport to HDMI converter for $100, would that work?

I understand that there is a way to get the 55inch to do uhdp60, was that true? I might be interested if it can do p50 in a Pal version.

With p60, you could display a 24p frame in the nearest p60 frame. Not perfect, but it would smooth out p,may back more than p30.
 
This is the newer version of the one Frazier posted and it's a bit cheaper: http://www.provantage.com/gefen-gtb-hdbt-pol-blk~7GEFN0CQ.htm It also has the advantage of running longer distances since it uses CAT-6 cabling and it sends power over line (POL), the receiver end doesn't need a power supply. Can also transmit IR or pulse data.

It's actually gone up in price about $50 over the past couple weeks for some reason. I guess people are finding them to be useful as they also aid in pushing signals to other displays and, IMO, are the best way to hook up a projector.

I don't know of any cheaper solutions that work 100%.. Simple boosters don't seem to do it and it's not that they wouldn't do it, it's that there isn't a simple booster available that isn't complete crap. Most don't even boost the signal, they do nothing or just crank up the amplitude and that solves little.

The HDMI cable that comes with the SEIKI is shit. I tested it and some other cables when I first got the SEIKI and was having troubles. If it were 6" longer, it wouldn't pass HDMI 1.3~1.4a spec. ;)

A stutter every 10 seconds or so is probably your playback device.

When operating at UHD resolution, the monitor only refreshes the image at 30fps. You get pull-up judder for 24fps material or other less than 30fps rates it will accept. I don't have any proper PAL hardware in my area or way to test if the set will sync and operate at 25fps or if people in PAL land also have 30fps issues to deal with.

The HDBASE-T extender from Monoprice also works OK, but not as good as the Gefen one and there's only a few $ difference.

Did some further testings today...

First up yes you are right the Seiki HDMI cable is shit... Do not use it.
Secondly out of the 3 HDMI cables I had here at the office a really low priced one that was only like 20cm long works much better than the rest. I can actually playback my material (2minutes long) without a studder or fludder in 25p 3840x900 several times before it even studders ones.

So I want to buy a HDMI booster but I would prefer to get a good quality one that does not need the KAT5 cable. Just HDMI to HDMI. and one power supply... but that is probably as you mention something that does not exist. So maybe I need to go and get one of those gefen units.

the apple store thunderbolt / display port to hdmi did not peddle above 1080p60
and neither does the accel ultra av display port 1.1 to hdmi passive adapter hdmi 1.4b (rated to 4k).
same results for all hdmi inputs. This seiki does not offer 30hz - just 24, 50 and 60.
so I am starting to feel that mavericks on pre retina macbookpros don't support 4k :(
would be nice if trial and error wasn't required to determine that.
any opinions on whether blackmagic ultrastudio 4k (thunderbolt 2) maybe will support 4k from premiere and FCP as claimed or will that be limited in the same way? Guess it depends on how the driver passes data over thunderbolt.
so hoping I can test tha at melrose Mac. Anyone get a non retina macbookpro to output 4k to seiki on mavericks?
expecting answer will be no.

The newer macbook pro retinas does do 30,25,24 Hz 4k out of the HDMI connector, if you want go trough the TB port then I'm pretty sure you need to have something there that supports 4k or atleast HDMI1.3. So not just any kind minidisplay to HDMI will do, I think there are such converters that makes it but not all.

apparently I purchased passive version of accell minidisplayport hdmi adapter instead of active version
Both have same hdmi 1.4a label!
Seems active is out of stock everywhere.
Also - DaVinci Resolve faq implies non retina have less GPU capability / pixel clock rates.
Anyone has another cable that works (with url to order from) and / or gets not retina macbookpro to work - please post.
Any explanations of hdmi 1.4a active vs passive within tis context? ;)

I learned a bit from talking to our swedish Gefen sales person today.

This is what he told me in short ( He might be wrong and I might have understood him incorrectly, but still):

Apparently there is different HDMI protocols, apple use one others use different etc. Apple devices kind of does a constant "handshake" basically apple machines constantly ask the screen what signal it wants. This sorts a lot of trouble but can also cause some. Gefen has different HDMI adaptors and extenders treat this handshake in different ways. some just feed it trough and others cuts them of and some reply just what was asked...

So with the Seiki he thinks that our macbook pro is constantly asking the screen if it's 30hz (25hz or 24hz if thats the setting) 3860x2160... the screen however is not really able to give a constant reply as it does not really run the same protocol as apple, this makes the macbook studder....

So what to do?

Well he told me that his best shot at it would be to get a "HDMI detective" basically a box that sits between two HDMI cables and all it does is that it:
1. boost the signal coming and forwards it.
2. it allways reply back to the source a: "yes" the signal is right for the receiving device.

So this little box makes the Seiki get a clean signal from the mac an no more studdering....


But thats all theory for now...

Tomorrow the theory will be put to practice. As he will send me one of these detective boxes to test . So hold thumbs, :thumbup1:
 
The Gefen HDMI Detective didn't solve the SEIKI signal issue for me. Not sure what's up with the SEIKI, but it does not play nice with just about any 4K source I feed it. I have to run it through some sort of booster or converter to make it work, which is really odd, but that's just the way it is. The GEFEN extender I linked above is working just fine from REDRAY and from an OPPO up-converting Blu-Ray player that outputs 4K. I have not worked with HDMI output from a Macbook Pro Retina… I suppose I could try it, but I've mostly stopped screwing with the SEIKI, just not worth any more time or effort here when we have other options to choose from. Yes, the price on the SEIKI is attractive, but I'd rather pay 3X the price for the Samsung or Sony because they actually work. ;)

For me it's interesting also if any from 2nd gen UHD TVs by other vendors will have display port, or panasonic is exception, and most will have only HDMI2 (that probably will limit use of it to very latest or maybe even just to not available yet next generation gpu-s), and DP will stay for UHD monitors only?

If you could try it with a retina macbook pro, that would be a great help. I want to order that extender but no real need if it does not work. Also Jeff, whats a good playback PCI card with HDMI? I guess the BM Prolink extreme works but I have no use for the 3D and the capture functions, so me thinking that there must be a lower cost alternative thats basically just a graphics card with HDMI and DIVx out... or no?

The next CES will show us what is what for the next gen of TVs, but I expect that some very high-end models will retain it while it will remain standard on all UHD professional displays.
 
Curious if anyone has seen this display from TCL http://www.tclusa.com/products/led/le50uhde5691/ ?

Probably the same panel as the Seiki but the specs list it as 4K 120HZ. Weird that we don't have true working (at least 60hz) 4K displays under $2k yet. I have a feeling this panel is only 120hz at 1080p but not really clarified in the specs.

HDMI is so dead, TV manufacturers should have just put in display link, and negotiate a future standard upgrade that would support similar functionality to HDMI, such as multi channel sound, that could be firmware upgraded to, and put a dead bolt into HDMI. I was a supporter of HDMI years ago, but they have not been proactive and since thunderbolt io support. display link come thunderbolt, had become a no brainer for a multimedia equipment and control interface.

HDMI is the most popular consumer device interface on the planet next to USB.

I understand your frustration, but HDMI is on over a billion devices worldwide and anything but "dead".
The desire for manufacturers to maintain cable compatibility with older devices is a great marketing ploy to make people feel good
about their old investment and justify a new purchase, especially when it comes to HDMI 2.0 Receivers.

HDMI = Good for Manufacturers

120 Hz + = Good for Gamers, VR & 3D

Displayport is not a very good connector either and offers minor improvement to what HDMI offers for the average consumer,
and quite a hassle. Wireless HDMI has more practical use than displayport to the average person...

The Seiki SE50UY04 50" processing only supports 120 Hz at 1080p resolution or lower as far as I've ever seen, and no more than 30 fps at 2160p.

I'm not knocking the HDMI 1.x specs, they fit their times. My beef is with the missed opportunity of HDMI 2.0 - this was the perfect time for an interface that enabled a host of next generation devices. It sure seems like the entrenched players wanted to make it more difficult for disruptive technology to threaten the status quo. Simple protectionism.

Oh… Don't even get me started on the level of quality in the music industry. We had a fighting chance with SACD and DVD Audio. Both of which flopped in the face of crappy, over-compressed, low-fi delivery via downloadable means and the fact that the majority of all people now listen through shitty little earbuds.

If I could be king of the music industry for a day, I would mandate that all audio be mastered as 100% losslessly compressed with support for a minimum of 5.1 channels at 192KHz/channel in 24bits. Minimum.

I'm still continuously amazed that with the quality level of home theatre and sound systems available to the common man these days, that the majority of all studio recordings and mixes are still 16bit, 48KHz stereo. What a shame. And further degraded by crappy compression for convenient delivery.

I guess I'm just going to bide my time until we see the "high def audio revolution". …if it ever happens. I suppose at some point it will have to as other entertainment becomes more immersive and since most people can currently store their entire audio libraries in triplicate at the maximum obtainable quality on a piece of flash media smaller than a postage stamp.
