  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Jim

I think there is far too much made of this Geoff Boyle.....i know everyone deserves a fair shake about what they have to say in this world of cinematography....but really....Mr. Jannard, COME ON letting the guy that made Mutant Chronicals and a handful of other B movies---or maybe they are C/D movies...but to affect you like that seems to much. I think everyone knows how you take every shred of criticism very serious...but come on....this Boyle is really a nobody. Take a vacation and stay off the boards for a while and don't let guys like this ruin your morning coffee---do like many of us when we don't want to hear retarded comments--BLOCK IDIOT by pressing here--.....Moving On............

....and like this is your last sign off....take a vacation and i'm sure we'll see you back here in a few months....you can't stay away from this....you're far too vested in everyone's reactions to what's new at red.
Well said Johnny. My sentiments exactly.

I was one of the douches that miss-read the post and thought Jim was retiring. Oops, Sorry. Super glad he's not, all is right in the RED world.

Even if he was retiring, there's no better time for it than just-after-creating-the-best-camera-ever-made.

Thanks for being the Steve Jobs of cinema, Mr. Jannnard. Thanks for your guts. And thanks for your tools. You should be obnoxiously proud of yourself. Light up a cigar, and gloat.

Geoff Boyle posted last night that Jim was retiring.. which is inaccurate.

If you knew Jim, he is not the kinda guy that can just ride off into the sunset.

Jim's vision is not something that can be turned off. He has way too many things left to do.

In his own words:

"I will now sink into the background, I hope with my reputation intact. I will work on the future of digital cinema... behind the scenes."

Just wanted to clear that up. I have been reading alot of Eulogies this morning and make no mistake.. there is no RED without Jim.

RED = JIM

JIM = RED

In this stage of the cine digital camera development JIM or RED Digital Cinema company needs a new marketing strategy!!!

Wow This has got to be one of the worst posts ever here on Reduser - why on earth would you write something like this about another filmmaker? what has he done to deserve something like this?

Noise is a collateral damage of suceed. Bad comments are a way to make more succesful your products too, because they generate buzz and simpathy by opposition (if bad comments are massive). It´s a well studied phenomena on the net.
The problem comes when you build a community where everibody is sending flowers to your ears, and those who are not in the same wave are banned, minusvalorated or, the final situation, just self censored.

I cant´belive that somebody who has made so much and so big changes his life for stupid comments on the net. I think that´s not the reason. But, well, the best state of mind becomes when trashtalks about your work make you stronger, not weaker.

Please read "Antifragile" by Nassim Taleb.

There's a lot of badmouthing of Jim and Red at the r/Filmmakers as well. The usual CML and DVInfo crowd. I had to learn to bite my tongue.

Red defied and changed many of the notions with traditional filmmaking. Lots of people are making a living thanks to Red, but some are seeing their livelihoods in danger, as they profit and make money from the old ways.

That's why a lot of people badmouth red with such animosity.... but in all honesty, Jim should take all of that animosity as a compliment rather than stress about it.

Jim is inspiring

Jim is inspiring

Jim's story is inspiring. His involvement in this forum, as a very successful man at the top of the world, was inspiring. I dream of owning Jim's baby, the Dragon. Some day, that dream is going to come true. May be 3 or 4 years from now, but someday.

I thank Jim for taking a dream and making it come true.

I haven't read the exchanges over at CML lately, and in fact have probably missed some of the dialogue here at Reduser over the past few months, but one thing that has always troubled me a little bit is the impersonal nature that forums are sometimes susceptible to. I encourage everyone to remember that when you post something, that you remember to consider the actual human being your comments are directed towards. If ypu wouldn't make those comments to the person face to face, don't make them on a forum hiding behind an avatar. We all have opinions, many of these opinions will find an opposing opinion. A debate can be healthy and constructive. Some things are better left said in a one on one exchange, without an audience. It gets uncomfortable on these forums when thing get personal and insults start flying. To me, that rarely if ever accomplishes anything.

If Jim is indeed done with forums, it's unfortunate. I think he has a lot to offer young people both in terms of Red and business in general. Someone like Geoff Boyle who is now banned could offer young cinematographers a ton of useful knowledge. Not sure what has distracted everyone from the more constructive approach but I can say that it's unfortunate that these voices won't be around to share their thoughts with this community on a regular basis.

Please, I beg everyone to use common courtesy and exploit the great potential forums have as knowledge exchanges. Check egos at the door, accept diversity of opinion, and build a stronger community of filmmakers.

Because of his inspiration, I bought my self a Scarlet.
I don't use the tool to make a living, but just to have as a part of his guts and revolution of thinking. I am very happy when seeing the Red team at the NAB'12. I didn't have a gut to go and say hi to Mr. Jannard.
Who knows, maybe the tool will be used in the near future.
Right now I just learn on it.
It's a very sad for a lot of us whom Jim is our model
and IDOL to look at , to post the FINAL POST.

Respect Sir,
somphane

Thanks for the big ideas you and your team bought to the industry and the world.

The 2013 RED reel is perhaps the best retrospective of what those ideas helped produce.

I still find myself watching this for the inspiration alone.

Having said all that... it's only a matter of time Jim Jannard makes another 3am post.

Until then .....

Storm in a tea cup I reckon.....as for the attention seekers, just watch....they will find someone else.

NO

NO

Just wanted to clear that up. I have been reading alot of Eulogies this morning and make no mistake.. there is no RED without Jim.

I walked into Lemac in Brisbane yesterday (a place that has 9 Epics) and the word was Jim had quit.

Sad.

I bought into your vision; laid down $58,000 for a Red Epic. And invested another $50,000 in your ecosystem. I don't shoot movies or big ads. I just shoot corporates; but we wanted to shoot with a camera that eclipsed everything. As Red does.

We rode the discounts down; saw $10,000 wiped off our investment; saw the Dragon chip increase from 6k to 9k.

No. Don't go anywhere. We remain here. Up for the cause.

Sometimes we let our emotions get the best of us regardless who is creating all the negative noise. When you pour your heart and soul into something you are definitely going to be sensitive about it no matter what. I do agree that most people have never heard of or care what the oppositions view point may be. I could care less to even look into it as I have a mind of my own and can make my own judgements seeing limited Dragon footage with my own eyes. I do think it was unwise to call out specific names in this whole thing, but whats done is done. Let Jim do his thing and hopefully he'll be back in the future.

I personally liked Jim's bombastic declarations, beat downs and personal shit. It made the forum interesting. It made people dream and hope higher as well as hate the shit out of it. Love or hate him, you fell into the trap.

I thought we all understood the meaning of this thread. He is done with the forum wrangling and just going to focus on making cameras.
