  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Jim

Several years ago now I filmed some material with a famous SWAT instructor, John Meyer. He glowingly told me that Oakley sponsored his team, that he had visited Oakley and met Jim, and how impressed he was that Jim was in a cubicle like everyone else in the giant office. He'd never seen anything like it. John gave me my first pair of Oakley sunglasses, courtesy of his sponsor.

Fast forward a few years and I see this scam at NAB. I'm reminded of the parable about the man who found a precious gem in a field, he buried it again, then sold all of his possessions to buy the field. Now I know this parable is about the Kingdom of God, but it sure sounded applicable to me. I went home and sold every piece of gear I could. First my precious 35mm Kinor, followed by my film stock and short ends. When I first saw my Red One footage I knew I was done with film, processing, dailies, and all the worry I experienced waiting on the lab. I named Red One #1673 Exodus - a departure for me from film.

Jim's vision and leadership have certainly changed the world of cameras and production. He and Red have certainly changed my life. All for good.

After one long November Reduser update night (East Coast here), my wife approached me the next day looking really serious. She asked me if I was up so late watching online porn. I think I laughed for 10 minutes. Finally I manged to say "Yes, honey, I'm addicted to this one site....Reduser". Then laughed for another 10 minutes. I think she is still a bit jealous.

All the best Jim! +1 vote here that your reputation AND integrity are intact.

Among Jim's many accomplishments is the one perhaps most important to all of us. Jim said something to me at NAB that would sound like BS coming from the average CEO. It was the year the first cameras shipped. I said, "I bet you're happy now." Jim replied, "I'll be happy when you're happy." And I felt it.

That attitude plays very much into why we like you and your company so much. You very obviously care about the customers as much as you care about the product. That counts. Big time.

FWIW...

Not long after Steve Jobs demonstrated the iPhone on stage in January 2007, an industry veteran implied that Jobs was cheating, that the phone he had in his hands could not actually do what he claimed it could. We had another expert claiming the iPhone would fail because it was a convergence device, and convergence devices rarely succeeded in the marketplace. And the CEO of a very large software company said that the iPhone wouldn't do well because it did not have a physical keyboard.

What a scam, eh? I am sure that Jim knows, despite his frustrations, that he wasn't the first to be falsely accused and he won't be the last.

Geoff Boyle posted last night that Jim was retiring.. which is inaccurate.

If you knew Jim, he is not the kinda guy that can just ride off into the sunset.

Jim's vision is not something that can be turned off. He has way too many things left to do.

In his own words:

"I will now sink into the background, I hope with my reputation intact. I will work on the future of digital cinema... behind the scenes."

Just wanted to clear that up. I have been reading alot of Eulogies this morning and make no mistake.. there is no RED without Jim.

As usual some people get what they want out of anything...

Could have not been clearer by Jim's final post what his intentions were...

While extremely Sad, since it was Jim whom actually made it so that I stay in this wonderful community when I was about to leave it, it does Saddens me to see him go from his own house (technically yours) but I do completely understand were He comes form and were all of this started...

So in a way I am also very happy about this, as I know I will see him and hopefully more times then one with my return in LA have one chance after an other to talk to the MAN, shake his hand in gratitude for what He has made possible and make him proud with my work on his highest achievement... The "RED EPIC DRAGON".

I wish to see him read much less crap out there and benefit from his life's hard work and enjoy it while taking some insane DRAGON images!!

So do I, I'll have a much quieter life than. no more late night abusive messages!

Mr Boyle, I respect you. A lot of my colleagues enjoy your posts on CML. But your response here is illuminating. Where you could have taken the high road and aimed for an EVEN tone, one that balanced respect with criticism, you chose instead to continue your spat with Jim and made your response personal, and borderline aggressive. Loaded with sarcasm, you come across as dismissive of Jim...in his own house...even when you know he will never respond back.

You and Jim are clearly Titans taking slugs at each other.

I simply wish you'd drop the fight and let it rest.

It's over.

I am so glad to hear this. My appreciation of Jim, his accomplishments, and generosity runs very deep. No other single company has had anywhere near the impact on my life as RED. Being an early adopter was one of the best decisions I have ever made.

Great News!!! Looking forward to the amazing things come next form a visionary that changed the film industry forever.

Jim, your life has been inspiring. Your glasses are bitchin and your cameras are nothing short of awe inspiring. Red and Epic have changed Hollywood and antiquated the film medium.
I'm sorry to see you leave you position of figurehead for the company. Your posts have made me feel like I was a part of the development of the cameras and it has been a lot of fun riding the roller coaster.
Jarred is a eminent replacement and has been doing a great job since coming on board. It was a post by Jarred in DVXuser.com that led me to the Red and I used that as an excuse to go to NAB for the first time in 2007. I've been sold from day one.
I will miss your posts, but I know you'll still be behind the scenes pushing technology forward. Thank you for all you've done.

I think there is far too much made of this Geoff Boyle.....i know everyone deserves a fair shake about what they have to say in this world of cinematography....but really....Mr. Jannard, COME ON letting the guy that made Mutant Chronicals and a handful of other B movies---or maybe they are C/D movies...but to affect you like that seems to much. I think everyone knows how you take every shred of criticism very serious...but come on....this Boyle is really a nobody. Take a vacation and stay off the boards for a while and don't let guys like this ruin your morning coffee---do like many of us when we don't want to hear retarded comments--BLOCK IDIOT by pressing here--.....Moving On............

....and like this is your last sign off....take a vacation and i'm sure we'll see you back here in a few months....you can't stay away from this....you're far too vested in everyone's reactions to what's new at red.

I for one will continue to stay up late just in case a fabled 3am post pops up only to disappear a few minutes later. It also got me searching around the net and I ran accross some priceless DVXuser threads giving a glimps into the past for future webiologists to peice together the history of Red.
