  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The single best buy...

...
So, I decided to keep the footage, in the vault - maybe, someday they just fit in - story wise ...
Now that was a brutal teaser. ;)
Sounds like you have captured some great moments in RED's history, that already fits in, i'm sure many people would love to see it.

You should release it as long as most people aren't used to watch 4k. Hehe.

it's an interesting time to reflect a bit on what Jim has started with his vision and guts, and what all of you and many others all over the world have created when melding technology, magic and the wonder of visual story telling.

they use a classic line in Pacific Rim (which you should all go see on the big screen if you haven't yet)

"Fortune favors the Bold" I think that embodies so many of those in our industry that took on the RED early and turned it into something important with all the amazing imagery you've all created!

Its amazing how being bold in the beginning turns out to show you were smart in the end. Seems the world is more and more sceptical of innovation, finding more reasons why something won't work, rather than celebrating the pocssibilities of what might be. Again, no idea how it must have felt to turn around to the whole of hollywood, wirh decades of proven workflows, and say "there is a different way to do this guys"

Ted, I doubt seriously you would remember but while waiting on the R-1 to be completed and shipped, I emailed RED asking for guidance on what I could or could not say on a small website I had at the time. You were the one who responded and in my naïveté, I had no clue what your position was with RED and how important your contribution would be. As it turns out, to all those patient zeros, you were Doctor 1.

As someone who has not had direct contact other than that email, I still have benefited from your work as you have been the interface between countless people across the world and RED Digital Cinema. As the RED system has grown in popularity and recognition, so has my time lessened trying to explain what and why I am shooting RED.

Thanks for doing what you do.

... Ted!

... i remember another part of history, when i was still living in Italy, poor like only artists can be ... LOL ...
i´ve put my last 100 bucks into gas and drove down to rome .... about 450 miles round trip ...

... and I saw the future. That where my original thoughts. And I´ve added, "... and it is stereo."

I get goose bumps while writing this ....

:-)

Regarding the PATIENT ZERO .... i guess, i played so hard, i was running around with a high gloss print out, showing a picture of the red one, the frame size comparison and stuff ... and trying to sell productions, talking people into investing, in italy and the biggest rental houses in germany as well, i talked to old clients, production companies, that once paid handsome ..... LOL ... nobody would believe me. "friends" ... that where none anymore from that day, ... told me it is "the biggest scam in history" ...

so, i think i am patient zero (out in the world) .... LOL ....

I was really crazy about it, .... (guess, i still am)

as you, Ted, may remember our little talk in Rome, holding the Epic Body in hand, I said: "I was waiting for this for 20 years." ... you:"Me too, ME TOO",

so much for history, nice memories and i truly hope, actually i believe, i will play my part in this lovely universe, you guys have created ...

further down the timeline ...
right now, it is all preparation and i enjoy seeing the wonderful work that is coming out of RED.

:-)

cheers,

to you

Detlev

... i am sure, it will intercut well ..... LOL ....
like mini sized windows into the past ...

actually,
it will show the dramatic progress and significance of the moment even better ...

:-)

I did something VERY similar -- needed a ray of hope in spite of the destitution -- went to RED and bought a t-shirt because I couldn't afford anything else. Haha.

The Internet has made it possible for everyone to be a content creator/distributor at this point, I think many of us saw this day coming. We just needed the tools to help fulfill that future. Jim provided the Swiss Army knife of professional camera systems when other companies were only willing to talk about what couldn't be done. Now we have several choices (but really only ONE -- haha), and the pinnacle of them all is coming -- DRAGON.

It is quite amazing to be filmmaker at this point in history. Given all that has transpired, and my faith in the RED team -- my money, will be on RED until they decide to stop. Granted, there will always be differing tools for a given job, but my team is shooting RED. Period. :)

If I had a feature on a tight budget I would totally use a RED One, it has 4 great audio channels and a great pedigree. Tried and tested. If you were doing lots of sports action footage the Epic is the only way to go. I hope that production looks at the RED One like they used to older film cameras.

I went to a live filming of "The Seinfeld Chronicles" one of the first of Seinfeld shows. They shot on an old Mitchell camera with a video camera gaffer taped to the top as a cheap video assist. So as successful as that show was, they used older gear to get started.

The RED One today still smokes all of the competitors that claim to be 4K.

Elsie, I've been seeing your posts for years on the various threads here, always think that you have something interesting and relevant to say on various topics. I'm glad I was able to help way back in the pre R1 shipping days... and I still have no clue what my position is at RED, other than running around the globe trying to help as many people as I can and have fun while doing it :-) I really like it that way.

I would love to connect up on email and meet up in person some day... maybe you and others want to make the trek into LA for the big Pacific Rim event we are going to do next week at the Saban theater? I spent a few hours yesterday with Maxine, the grading artist at Warner Bros. She's really cool and savvy, has tons of energy and I think it's going to be a really interesting evening. (and she's 8.5 months pregnant, which makes things even more interesting :-)

Detlev, I do remember that moment in that really cool theater in Rome with the window shades (it was the most interesting theater I think I've ever been in, and I've been in a lot of movie theaters) where we talked about the EPIC being the perfect camera for so many types of shooting! I'm trying to get back to Italy again this fall for another presentation after IBC.

and Brian, you are of course one of the original patient zeros (one of the very, very first in fact) it's always great to catch up with you and see you out in the world doing so well with whatever camera you are shooting that day (and very glad that's an EPIC most of the time!)

Ted,

I am trying to get to IBC this year, but if you do come to Italy would you consider stopping in to Florence? If you do not, I'll get to wherever you are.

I Love my R1, I use it for wildlife and believe me, the 5D for wildlife compared to the R1, its a child toy.

I'm dreaming with a DRAGON UPGRADE for my R1 :emote_happyhappy:

The price pint of $4K or less for the Red One, also requires factoring the duration of the manufacturer's repair obligation, which, as I remember it is 5 years after the discontinuation of product sale. It would seem unlikely that a third party vendor would undertake the replacement/full repair service, but maybe...
Thank you very much

Fury

Can I go, can I go, can I go -- please, Ted? Nice to make your acquaintance. :) Just saw it over the weekend, but as soon as we exited the theater, a couple of us were already talking about a repeat viewing -- it was visual cortex overload.

What's funny is that most people couldn't tell the difference between a R1 and 5D (some even preferred the 5D).

There are also people who prefer McDonald's to fine French cuisine - maybe the same people. Crude types with little culture or education and no appreciation for fine detail or subtlety. Luckily, there are zero such people among my clients.

My grandmother used to say, "I can tell you, but I can't understand it for you."

Understanding is nigh impossible to impart to another.
