  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I've seen this many times and more or less accepted it as part of the MX sensor's "charm', but I've always wondered why it is so. Whenever I get a shot that is blown out, the blown-out areas will look slightly pink. Turning down the ISO reveals the "problem" areas. Here's an extremely exaggerated example. Anyone who can shed some light on this issue? I would assume it was possible to fix this in software?

It's pretty well known, little documented and usually not spoken about... :-))

It is not fixed by DRX but a quick secondary.

Cheers

It is because the color temperature of the highlight has caused one channel to not saturate before the others.
DRX usually takes care it. You can also do the same by using RGB curves and adjusitng the highlight balance.

Deanan is of course right, but there are two different ways this can happen.

When DRX can fix it, adjustment in the top of the curves and aligning the channels will fix it.

never seen this either, are you sure it isn't a lens problem as I can see chromatic abberition there also. (I am bad speller)

It's quick to test for.

The DRX fixable issue usually just pops out when you do like Tony has or set the gamma to linear.

It is quickly fixed and happens only in parts of the image that are somewhat overexposed.

If you're not at 5000k, the channels will have to clip at different levels, as the light temperature is unlike the native sensor temperature and the effect is further enhanced by the whitebalancing.

DRX and curves takes care of that.

The other issue can be seen more like a flare in situations that earlier would have triggered black-sun.
THAT has to be taken out by secondaries.

I know it is not good practice to talk about this as it is hardly ever neccesary to fix, but when it occationally happens, it is good to know...

I say Redcolor2/Redlog film = no problems!

Off-colour clipped highlights is a general sensor issue on pretty much all cameras I've been able to play with. I know my Canon DSLRs do it, for instance. Often it is hidden by deliberately over-exposing the image in the development thus clipping the image to white, rather than on off-colour. Of course, this wastes DR.

Perhaps you could add a "Make all highlight areas white" type of button to your app so that it is
easier for people to fix this issue? Also, there could be a setting for at which point it makes things white.
Such as, anything above 98 percent etc.

Just a suggestion. :)

Martin, it's called the DRX control. It doesn't make things white, though, it tries to make them neutral to the colour temp intent.

Hello Graeme,

Yes, I understand.....but, I thought there was a suggestion in this thread that this DRX didn't always quite fix the problem all the time,
hence my suggestion that another control be added, you know, to take the whites to eleven, as in, these whites
now go to ELEVEN, which is one more. :)

Like I said - this was a super exaggerated example, but it is noticeable sometimes and it's nice to know that it can be removed almost completely with the DRX tool. I guess I've just been working with the Rocket for far too long so I've gotten used to not having the DRX tool at hand since it's turned off when the Rocket is enabled. Thanks for the speedy responses and staying on-topic, guys!

Now I'm wondering, since Epic has the same sensor, does it have the same (minor) issue?

All sensors will do this - and as Gunleik says, it's not an issue. I've seen the same issue on film scans too.

Hi,
We are having same issued with our newly MXed RED ONE?Is this any sensor issue?Never faced this problem is our earlier Mxed camera.
We will grade in Scratch.Any remedies?

In REDcinex, a simple grade using rgb curves is to pull the highlights Y slider (second one) for blue and red down.
Usually blue to (1,.90) and red to (1,.95)
