Adobe Abandons Creative Suite, Announces Full Switch to Creative Cloud

This is very bad move from Adobe. They should provide two option,CC and Licensing.

There is a big Adobe complex near my home and they have low cost lunch and free drinks for the employees. As it happens, anyone can walk in the front door and get the same cheap food and free drinks. I for one will just visit for lunch a little more often if I feel Adobe is taking advantage of me. :-)

I don't mind paying.. I just want to know that I dont need to be online to be able to use any of the programs.
I have shit net most places I travel in the world.. and the last thing I need is ADOBE fucking me around online to use there products...
I love stand alone programs sitting in my laptop and not having to be online to use them.

If someone from ADOBE can pipe up... would be nice.

No offense to everyone saying this is a bad move for Adobe... but Adobe is a business, and for them, it's a brilliant move. They've discovered they can potentially make a lot more money by going this route, and that's their right. They exist to make a profit. Why do you think (among other reasons) that Apple has been so slow to upgrade their towers? Selling towers doesn't keep the shareholders happy. Selling iPhones and iPads does! Personally I think the $50 / month (I just exhausted my first year 'discount') I'm paying is a steal for what I get. Not only do I get the full master collection that I had before, but other software that didn't even come with master collection, as well as online storage, and other collaborative tools... and it doesn't matter if I have a PC, Mac, or both! I understand the people that 'only' use Premiere / After Effects / Speedgrade, etc not wanting to pay $50 / month for all this other software they may not use, but Adobe is producing professional tools for professional use. If you're a hobby user, there are plenty of low/no cost editing solutions out there for you... sorry, I know that sounds harsh, but I think people just need to accept this is the new reality and move on with their lives. I'd worry more about using your RED to shoot something amazing than Adobe taking a measly $50 out of our pockets each month...

It's too bad they didn't make different packages for people who only use a few of the apps... anyone who uses the complete range of Adobe products should be very happy while one or two app users will think they are paying for a lot of bloat. The price per app that has been posted precludes just renting a couple of the apps at a time.

And some of those may, as you suggest, move to other platforms. I suspect Adobe figured this could happen and weighing the pros and cons, decided it will be more profitable going the Cloud route. Like many here suggest, it would be nice to have the choice to just purchase the app of your choice, even at a higher price hike than normal. But even if that were the case, personally I think I can live within the cloud and will very likely move to that when the next apps are loaded.

I personally don't like the idea of a monthly subscription fee, but if I think of it as something like a phone bill or internet service bill, I can rationalize that.

Ditto.

I try to say it as neutral as I can: To have only a subscription model is not what I want,
nor that anyone I spoke to since the MAX keynote likes this forced model.

I like to have the old CS license model as alternative. I do not need a physical shipment.
Adobe has a quasi monopoly and with that some kind of responsibility.

I have paid updates since 1993, twenty years by now. I'm not happy as it is announced.

To be forced as well to install it on the main-drive, rather than on a fast external, is not
wanted either.

All in all, this is bad news from my perspective.

@ Greg no offence, when things go wrong ................It's not the "hobbists" that will suffer.............. it's the pro-users with impossible deadlines or editing in remote places.

Because all this is new............. somewhere, somehow this system will "F^*k UP" for some lucky pro user.

As stated elsewhere on this thread Adobe should offer both options with "cloud" downloads being cheaper & hard copies being more expensive ...I want certainty not uncertainty & I'm prepared to pay for it. In fact why don't Adobe offer a Pro-user guarantee, I'd pay even more for that as insurance for a cloud/software/licensing failure on a mission critical job ?

But wait, this isn't about better service for the customer this is all about making it easier for the company (which is their right). Instant updates .....big deal..I can do that now without the "cloud" . Easy monthly payments ..just like my mobile........ so what I want to know the benefits of this new system that make my job easier, are there any ?

The other obvious concern about "Adobe cloud" software/licensing is there will no longer be any financial pressure to EXCEL or deliver "shit hot updates" to encourage users to buy into a Adobe system. Basically once you are in you're in for good, so it doesn't matter wether they deliver good, bad or indifferent updates every year or every 2 years that's it....there will be no incentive for innovation just steady as she goes, do the minimum for the maximum return to the shareholder. CS13 has a new font ! WOW. Cynical maybe but do we really believe this can't happen.

One thing for sure - if it is going to icloud only it MUST be rock solid. If you cant access the apps because of some access problem that is just not going to work.

Aside from everything else that's been raised here, one thing Adobe have not been able to do in the past is release new features mid cycle, only bug fixes. As i understand it, this is due to consumer protection laws covering all those people who bought software in a box. By removing that product and moving to a 'monthly' service rather than a yearly product, they can now begin to release new features as and when they're ready to go, no waiting for the next dot release 6 months down the line. So, when Dragon colour is ready, boom, everyone gets it via the cloud.

...Having a big release once a year is a pain in the ass for everyone. incremental releases makes more sense and subscription costs are actually easier to manage.
Respectfully disagree Bob. For those that just use apps like AE as they come from Adobe, this is fine. When you have a slew of third party plugins as I do, constant updates are a real p.i.t.a. You have to go through and reinstall them all again with each update. (This is assuming you can use plugins with the cloud version.) If this happens every few few days or weeks, it could get very annoying. And one can only hope that updates are not automatic and screw you up in the middle of a project when the plugin you're using disappears. That would be a total showstopper for me.

Just because there IS an update to your installed cloud Adobe product does not mean you have to update TO it.

You are in control of the installation of the updates.

Obviously people are really confused about how this model works.

A) You don't have to be online to use the products; you only have to be online for the initial download/install. The products install just the same as if you purchased software install discs; except that there are no discs. You download the install, and only when you initially install the software.

B) Yes, you have to check in once a month to confirm that your subscription is current; just like going to the gym. But the software lives on your computer, just as if you had installed from discs.

C) All of your projects live on your computer, just like the software! You don't have to store anything "on the cloud" if you don't want to.

D) You don't have to update your software unless you want to. You will get notifications (if you are online) when new versions are available, but you aren't forced to update. It's an option.

E) The cost is ridiculously inexpensive if you use more than a couple applications in the suite. Seriously! This is the Adobe Master Collection for $600 per year or less. Educational pricing is $360 per year. And if you get in on the promotions, it can be as cheap as $240 per year! $240 per year. If you normally upgrade once every 3 years (and you are living in the dark ages if you don't!), it's still much less expensive than buying the entire suite.

F) If you only use a single app, it's only $20 per month.

In my opinion, this is the best deal going in the pro application market. Period. Every single Adobe application is included!

I personally use: Premier, After Affects, Speed Grade, Photoshop, Lightroom, Audition, Prelude, Story, Encore, Illustrator, InDesign, and Acrobat Pro! All for $20 a month (educational special) for the next year, and $50 a month there after. This is a stupid good, no-brainer deal! And, my software is always up to date with all the latest enhancements (if I choose!).

Come on guys. Get with the program. Quit whining and take advantage of one of the most powerful software suites on the market.

Sheesh! :)

BTW, I'm not affiliated with Adobe in any way other than using their products since about 1988!

Well, I only use Premiere ocationally, photoshop not that often and media encoder now and again. I bought CS5.5 for one specific project as it was the only nle that red R3D's natively at the time. I factored that cost into the project.
If I want to use the latest Adobe offerings I have to pay (in Norway) $80 a month to use this software a few times a month. More in short periods. It's not that tempting anymore.
I tried to see if I could buy the upgrade to CS6 today, but it doesn't seem possible anymore.

if you are a heavy user the price point is of course not to bad, but I'm not

Personally I don't like being "locked up". Its like credit card instalments. I like to pay and "own" the software and not have the feeling I'm renting it ad eternum, or forever. Not a big fan so far of Premiere but If the new one really is that much better than in its current CS6 encarnation, then I will try it. If not CS6 after effects, photoshop and adobe media encoder work for me.

Jeeze! What is this? Soylent phukin Green? Trying to talk us all into going with the flow? I tell you what... I won't try to talk you into giving up the cloud model if you let me state my case for retaining outright purchase. Deal?

Note A: I haven't used a disk for my Adobe products since CS3. All downloaded just like the cloud stuff. Except I own it and don't have to fuck with point B.

If rental suits you, fine. Stay happy. It doesn't suit me.

I bought the Production Premium CS5.5 package during their "switch from FCP7" promotion.
Can't believe I'm saying this, but now I'm thinking of giving FCPX a good look.

I don't believe this is a customer-oriented move to improve our experience, it's a cash grab. Giving your customers less choice for more money isn't good business IMHO.
Upgrading once a year was what, $350? Now $600 for a CC subscription. I use maybe a half-dozen of their software horde, I couldn't care less about having access to the rest, it's false value to think OMG I'm getting all of that! It's filler, it's the air in a bag of chips.

If they're going to force us to rent the sw instead of owning it, I'd at least like to see package pricing more in line with the former upgrade cost.

Taylor, I don't want to derail this thread too much, because it's not about FCPX, but as a pointer: I also bought 5.5 with the switch campaign, but never really used it. Gave FCPX another chance after 10.0.3, and now switched 100 percent to FCPX. My only message to you is: give FCPX a fair chance, but do it by informing yourself first (tutorials, training, advice from people) so you don't get nasty surprises because you don't know something about the software. And be sure that you will have to get used to the software, and know that some of the 'clicks' you make mentally, will not happen in the first project. It takes some time, but I really really REALLY like editing in FCPX now - although I have my own wish list about things that could be better.

About Adobe: I like their subscription plan, although I'm rather a 'buy my software' guy. Not giving people the option is wrong in my opinion.

IMHO, this is a clear signal that Adobe is not confident in developing new features. They have instead now adopted a model of bait and switch and extortion. I fully expect the allure in their future software offerings to be mostly based upon compatibility with the newest codecs, etc., which of course wonʻt be supported in CS6.

Sad about it, but Adobe shit the bed on this one. I predict it will go down in history as a worse PR blunder than Appleʻs FCP7>FCPX transition. At least Apple has other products, poor Adobe only sells software and Iʻll bet they lose the farm on this ill-fated venture.
