  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I've always tried to stay on the cutting edge in regards to technology and equipment and that's why I shoot on the RED and soon the EPIC. Now I just try to make my stuff look different that everything else I see.....I shot this last week using a system that I've put together that I call MozoCam.

I still have some tweaking to do but all of this footage was shot in a two hour period in Charleston last Friday.
 
I've seen this done before but not always this smooth. Lee, what's going on at :24 in? Looks like the frame shifts, as there is a black bar on the right side. There's no smoothcam or other post stabilization right?

Looks really good.
 
Looks fantastic Lee. Hard to believe "Just so you know, there's no Steadicam involved"

Are you goung to show us a picture of your setup?
 
Hey Ketch, Vimeo text said he didn't use a steadycam so I'm very interested in how it's so smooth.

There appears to be a bit of post stabilization? Unless I'm wrong. at 00:23 there is the edge of the frame... and what an edge it is. Also later, there is picture warping as (final cut?) attempts to skew the frame to eliminate shake.

I think the segway is cool (though misleading)... but is sort of negated by the fact that you have stabilization done in post...
 
I have real issues if someone posts this type of thing and doesn't mention that post-stabilization was used. That should be mentioned upfront if the point is to show how smooth the shots are, in my opinion.

We're all seeing the same thing. But I'll wait to hear it from Lee and give him the benefit of the doubt.
 
Sure, it would be good to know if this post stabilized.

But having said that, I really like it! Hmm... there's a Segway store down the street...

EPIC + Segway + Steadicam + 96fps. That would be fun.
 
I've been experimenting with different ways to make this happen and it's getting better.

I have no reason to be misleading by any means. Yes, I stabilized in post but honestly don't think I spent more than an hour working on it. I really just threw some of the shots together that I thought were cool, colored and stabilized as needed. I'm a fan of using whatever tools I have available and I'm certainly not embarrassed about using smoothing tools in post. I think that it's pretty cool to be able to get shots like these without a steadicam, mainly because I'm not a Steadicam operator. If that's what you're going for, use everything you can. It's not like we don't color our footage....is that cheating? I just think that if it works, it works.
 
Fair enough Lee. That's why I was giving you the benefit of the doubt. I think clarifying that this also utilized post tools is helpful because otherwise people may expect to hop on that thing and get perfectly smooth shots. I'm sure there were times when it was pretty smooth without any help from post and times when you need to take out the little bumps to make it work well. I agree that anything you can do to make it look great is viable.

So, the real moral of the story here is that the Segway with the occasional help from post smoothing can be a nice option for getting silky smooth moves into your videos.

So this was with the RED One on your shoulder? That's is impressive indeed. How is it with the center of gravity up high when your driving the Segway? What mount were you using for handheld?

On a side note, does anyone have any links to camera mounts for a Segway?
 
it looks really awesome, but I'm really curious what it would look like with out the stabilization from post.

Segways are pretty awesome though, and they do ride really smoothly and are great when it comes to controlling constant speed so it might be cool to see what happens if somebody with a technical background puts a shock mount on the segway also with a gimbal and a steadicam arm so the segway will support the steadicam instead of your body.. it might make for even smoother shots... now only if I had a segway, a technical background, and extra parts....
