UNDERWATER HOUSING Comprehensive Test & Review

Hi guys. I've been wanting to get the Epic Underwater Housings together for a comprehensive test for quite sometime and have been in discussions with fellow RU and builders for a while. There are several great options and more coming.

Epic Underwater Housing Options:

Gates
Deep-X
Amphibico
Aquavideo
Nauticam
Subspace
Equinox

I'd like to get experienced divers, shooters and builders together in Kona Hawaii, late March 2013 to put these systems through their paces. This is not an official test for a publication, just a collaboration of friends and colleges looking to gain experience we can all benefit from. Results to be posted on RU.

My previous test work can be seen here: SALT III: High Speed Lens Shootout

I'll post a new thread as well to track the progress of this project.

Any chance of doing it somewhere like Stuart Cove's in the Bahamas? I suspect it's easier and cheaper for Amphibico, Aquavideo, Nauticam, and Equinox, and probably about the same for John at Gates. Also, I suspect a month is a little short notice for the principals of most manufacturers to schedule something like this. Not to mention that NAB starts April 7 in Vegas.

Man, you always made me laugh Tom...wish we had gotten to dive together more on this last trip and spend more time. Yes, we are both nuts and love sharks that's for sure. BTW, I got those two shots the last day. No current, clear to the bottom, sunshine. You gotta love that. Timing is everything. Got lucky.

We'll do another trip together soon. I may be going back over for another 5 day 4 night to Bimini and film them again. Only 3 days of diving with them this time but three tank trip. Small group. Limited to 8 divers. 3 spots are sold already. Space for 5 more. Two bedroom shared accommodations. If you know of somebody that wants to go let me know via pm or email. By mid March.

All Hammers again. Then Tigers first of March again, then Oceanics.

Great to see you, Jim and Ron there.

Thanks for the kind comments, you made me laugh tonight.

Will try to post a edit of the biting sequences, the footage is crunching now.

John Bantin just sent me this photo of me with the Hammerhead, he shot this same time as one of the bite shots I got. Photography by John Bantin.

Best,
Frazier

Sweet - Any chance I can get that shot for promotional use?

I'll ask John to see, would be a great shot for your promo page, the other side of that shot from my angle is of course.

Thanks, Frazier, Mauricio, John and Jon for the kind words.
Frazier - I would really be tempted to go right away again, but work conspires... Have to build studios for "real" filmmakers. I'll likely go again next year.
Jim, Tom - I know I owe you both frame grabs of your close encounters. Please hang in there... they're coming.

My bad Greg. I'm breather guy too. Maybe I'm just too close to this conservation stuff to get a joke sometimes.

Interesting rumor:

http://www.canonrumors.com/2013/02/canon-ef-12-24-f2-8l-cr1/

"We’ve spoken about the existence of an EF 14-24 f/2.8L in the past, a lens that a lot of people want to see come to fruition.

We’ve been told that an EF 12-24 f/2.8L exists in prototype form and could become a product instead of the EF 14-24 f/2.8L. I can only recall Sigma making such a lens for full frame cameras. Going this wide would certainly put some space between the cheaper (assuming based on Canon pricing history) EF 17-40 f/4L and EF 16-35 f/2.8L II."

An L series 12mm zoom would be pretty awesome on an Epic.

Like the large dome on this Ryan. Did they figure out a good handle for it other than the bottom rails. Is it going to have a vacuum check device port installed also? HD-SDI out for surface monitor?
