  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

ODEMAX - where is the info?

Its very easy to say what "RED should do"...particularly if you're not RED.
RED will do what they will do and the industry is "patently" (pun intended) better
because of RED.

This is supposed to be an Odemax thread. Not a discussion about Red bringing a patent suit. That is a discussion for the patent thread one of which is still open.

I'm sure I read awhile back that there should be more info on ODEMAX.

Could someone please point me to the latest news from ODEMAX and how the system works.

Sadly, there is no news. Who really knows what is going on in the corporate boardrooms at the moment. It just appears that players are jostling for positions in content acquisition and distribution for the future.

Right now UHD is the Wild West and the Gold Rush. Everybody is trying to figure out where and how to dig.

My guess is that they were a bit hasty and eager to make the announcement, and only then did they realize the complexities involved. Because it's not a whole new world, it's an upgrade (and quite possibly an improvement) to a world that has been trundling along for a while and has an intricate mess of rights, territories, most favored nations, and the rest of it. I don't doubt that it will surface in some form eventually, given that it has the backing of RED and their technology behind it, but this is a challenging proposition to pull off so I suppose we just have to wait and see.

I don't buy that it's more complex then they thought. These are business people.

What I do buy is let's build hype... and I'm afraid they got me/us.

Create a queue and build hype.

From Red's silence, they may have gotten Red too into believing that they would be delivering about the same time as Red wa or have plans for.s delivering Redray player. Red was hyping them big time in the begging, partnering, meeting with them to iron out any problems and now silence. Maybe Red will offer its own nextwork? Why not? What doesn't it do right now or have plans for. Why should it partner and share its wealth?

I think play with the majors, let youtube and vimeo host the red 4 files...

And make a player so we can view with any 4k graphics card that comes out. rad ray only will never go big I think.

HDMI 2.0 is due out soon. I can't help but wonder if it would be best not to ship REDRAY players in large quantities until it's released since they will obviously need to upgrade once it's out. The HDMI 1.4 standard only support 24p 4k/UHD and using 4 HDMI 1.3 connectors is only a temporary solution that I don't see lasting. HDMI 2.0 will support 60p at 4k/UHD resolutions.

That Would mean a further delay of over a year. Once the standard comes out, chips to implement the standard would take about 6 months to come out, something like that. However, the Red community of professionals need the Redray player now. Consumers don't until something like Odemax becomes real and a viable source of content.

but Red doesn't get hung up on standards.

Yeah, you're right. At best we're probably looking at late Summer or early Fall before HDMI 2 devices start shipping.

As I said when they made the announcement, if they let this sit too long 4k delivery will be in much more popular devices... Specifically PS4 (announcing on the 20th apparently) and Xbox "720" (both rumored to be coming out this year)... Now I don't want to crap on unreleased/unshipped products (RRay), but those other (presumably) 4k devices will be less than $500 and have next-gen consoles attached. Endusers aren't likely to pay double for less benefits, so I don't know where the RRay really fits in with the non-content-creating consumer... In otherwords, anything the RRay can do, I expect a $300-$500 next-gen console will have built in (hell even current consoles have enough processing power), minus the codec.

Given that, Bruce's comments actually seem plausible - RED pushing it out the door to apply for a patent broad enough that they can then make MS/Sony pay for an ability inherent to/expected in their next consoles, which would be BS because Ps4 has been rumours/expected to have 4k playback (games and media) since late 2011 (ironically even the PS3 was toted as being able to play quadHD - four streams of 1080p simultaneously - to show off CELL processor's multimedia prowess back in 2004-5). As 'conspiracy-theory' as that sounds, if you could apply for and be awarded a patent on something that broad knowing full well it's coming down the pipe on hugely successful devices (consoles, set-top boxes, etc), you probably would in order to collect licensing revenue. Now this RED v Sony raw4k/23+fps stuff sounds a little more compression specific, so I doubt this kind of crap is likely... however if it turns out that it's as broad as Bruce thinks it is, then... well... uh-oh spaghettios... I don't see why they wouldn't try the same thing with distribution.

I imagine RED is busy with DRAGON and their case against SONY. They are aware of their reputation for sometimes being late, but they have always delivered. Give them the benefit of the doubt. If they are late, or are not communicating up to snuff, I'm sure they have their reasons.

An because they are Red we should just accept whatever they say or don't say because they have a good reason. All we are are their customers and because they push competitor prices down we should just go along. If we only had Red for our government. Ted would make the perfect politicion and he wouldn't need a speach writer and there would be no danger of him letting info out. I do like him and he is smoother than a baby's rear end. Odemax needs a spokesperson like him. Then we wouldn't complain but we would have only the same amount oif info we have know. Go figure.

Not to discuss patents here, but getting a product out the door quickly has nothing to do with getting a patent. Totally irrelevent.

These are not really business people. RED typically avoids 'business people' preferring a more organic, figure-it-out as you go along approach. I'm certain that the big ideas come way before the cold light of day hits them, and their weakness is showing their hand before that moment. Of course, they do like a fair serving of hype as well, but that's by the by.

Bruce...

Read this article....there are a couple of interesting paragraphs

http://money.cnn.com/2012/12/18/technology/mobile/apple-samsung/index.html?source=cnn_bin

Well, they'd better be careful.

Because I'm patenting "compressing 4K video fast enough for it to be useful" :)

If RED can patent "compressing visually lossless >2K raw-originated video in a camera at >23fps" surely I can patent "compressing visually lossless >2K RGB-originated video on a computer at >1fps" ?

The fine print will be something really broad like their "using any compression method such as but not limited to JPEG2000, H264, Huffman..."

How about "using but not limited to GPUs, FPGAs, custom ASICs, multithreading..."

Seriously, I now actually hope REDRAY fails.

Because if it succeeds, RED is going to come up with some idiotic broad patent for it like I have just described and then try to sue everyone else who ever wants to distribute high quality >2K compressed high-resolution video.

If you point to DCI cinema files or Youtube as prior art "they'll say well, Youtube's 4K wasn't high enough quality and DCI wasn't >2K (even though there were no 4K projectors for it to project to at the time it was invented)... our GENIUS is in combining both!"

Again, they won't try to patent a specific compression method. They'll just try to patent the combination of 4K with ANY compression method that is visually lossless.

It's business, it's called that for a reason. If you like shooting which is what I thought this forum is about then be happy. Otherwise please by all means, invent your own tech, file for patents, and then see how much you'd protect your baby. Again, it's business, not personal. Some of the arguments made here make me scratch my head.

I emailed the email address on the ODEMAX site and never got a response.

Rory, same for our team...Our Houston partners own a good bit of the fiber in the city. They currently service most all the major oil and gas guys downtown.

I am curious to see how Odemax solves the "last mile problem" that has been inherent in the "connectivity" industry for decades...

Looks like it may be a longer lead time than first projected....

Would have at least appreciated a simple reply...but it has been radio silent on all fronts
