  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Nikon Mount Aluminum and Titanium

Dear Red Team,

Ordered, but couldn´t find detailed information. Will the mount support manual lenses (Ai/Ais) in addition to just the physical fit, does it read the Ai information via the Ai coupling ridge, at least for meta data? Will it be able to control aperture via the Ai-s now or maybe after a new firmware release? Any insights appreciated.

Cheers

Ulf

Any lens not on the list is an unknown.. just like the Canon was.. until it gets characterized, you just need to get lucky.

And yes.. we will start characterizing 3rd party Nikon lenses.. you guys should figure out which ones you want first.

Thanks Jarred,

This is grrrreat! Thanks to the Red Team! You have made our field work so much better!

Just one persons dreams: At least for Nature Landscape and Wildlife photographer!

Most of us in the field can not predetermine distance to subject as in a studio, so primes are not as often chosen over zooms. Even though zooms tend to be less sharp with more glass!

That said, I still love the Nikon 60mm Micro Nikkor as the sharpest lens I own. Thank you for having this lens on the list already!

These days with crowds at the best places, getting the right space is a gamble! And don't ever think about getting close to an animal in public with out the Hubble telescope! Hee Haa!

The lens that is always ready on our Epic is the Nikon 17-35 f2.8. Or the Nikon 12-24 f4 (not yet on the list). If I am running to film something ...maybe the Nikon 18-200, for stealth and focal length options.

Adding more wide zooms above and the Tokina 11-16 f2.8 would be nice.

Standard, Nikon 70-200 f2.8 VR, is the first lens for any wildlife, (on the list already).

Nikon's best wildlife overall lens is the Nikon 200-400 f4 VR and of course the 300-800 Sigma is now a standard!

I also like the Nikon 400 f2.8 and the 600 f4 if I am in a known location but find less and less using these lenses as clients want close up and then even closer until only the eye is in the frame!
Then medium and wide clips!

Thank you for the Red Nikon mount and thank you for any of the updates to Nikon lenses. In the meantime, I hope to learn how to use the Red Nikon mount and use some of the lenses as we always have ...Manually!

Best,

Kennan & Karen Ward

Now we're cooking on gas! Thanks for getting this out the door Jarred.

It works!

Zero functionality with uncharacterised lenses as expected - no AF, no iris control, nada.

Mike

Mike,

Congrats, still waiting for mine. Thanks for sharing information. Just curious, does it read the Ai information via the Ai coupling ridge? Any iris meta data?

Cheers, Ulf

Got it. Just put a 24-70G zoom on the camera. Seems to focus slightly slower than my Canon mount-w- 11-16 Tokina. (Chalk it up to different lenses??) Other than that, works as advertised! Oh, I got an 82 mm Heliopan Vario ND-w-front screw in from Germany. So far, no vignetting (even with a Heliopan rubber lens hood) or weird color shifts-w-the 24-70. I'll have to test some more, but so far so good.

Got mine earlier. Popped the Nikon 16-35 f4 VR lens on the Epic, and both the iris and VR seem to work perfectly. I haven't bothered trying auto-focus yet, but I'll try that tomorrow.

can I add a +1 for the Tokina 11- 16 and the Nikon 105 to be added to the list soon.. please
It's great that the mount is available at last, thanks everyone involved. I'm looking forward to meeting up with mine very soon

Received my Nikon Ti mount yeasterday. The mount itself is well designed. I only tried my Nikon 70-200 V11 so far. The focus works about as good as the Canon mount. However, when changing the aperature using the side handle rocker switch it is very slow. To change the aperature I must push the rocker switch just once about every 10 seconds to change the aperature. If I hold down the rocker switch, the aperature of the lens cycles from open to close staying within the same F stop. I think there needs to be new firmware to correct this behavior.

Tested the New Red Nikon TI mount. Looks great, and function fits well.

None of my Nikon lenses auto focused, a couple had very slow responce in toggle iris control on side handle. Menu set iris was responsive on some Nikon lenses.

I took the Red TI Nikon mount off and put it back in the box and replaced it with the OptiTek Nikon ProLock.

I will have to wait till more Nikon lenses "..gets characterized..."

Got my Nik TI this afternoon. So far, I am very pleased. Works great with 70-200 and 14-24. Even got it to "sort of" work with 600 f/4. Even the VR works! Hope to do some better testing tomorrow afternoon. Thank you Red!

I just slapped my 14-24G on. I am NOT disappointed at all! Been waiting for this for a while. Now, I have to get one of those fotodiox lens hood adapters.

Evin,
You really need to test Rokinon set as well.

The Rokinon set are fully manual, what is there to test? They will Just Work with the Red Nikon mount surely?

And congrats Evin... it's interesting how everyone seems to reach for the 14-24 first :-)

Mike

@ Evin,
If you can't get it locally, I am willing to send my set (asa 24mm cine available)

Click on his link (lol),

I meant, Bokeh, Breathing & Flare test of Rokinon (and compare) .... not a RED NIKON Mount (lol)

I'm a happy camper...

Hi Evin,

looks like the Al Version. Did you already tested it with larger lenses? Do you think a lense support is necessary? Probably you could say something about the differences/advantages concerning the stability in comparison to the R1 Nikon Mount (the new one looks much more solid).
Thanks in advance.

Thomas.
