  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

PRO IO MINI - WHO WANTS IT - VOTE HERE !

You heard me, I said enable and nothing about a module. I'm almost certain that the Epic could shoot right to Prores onboard. This should be a software upgrade and nothing else.

Yes, certainly is against RED RAW only philosophy but they already enabled an external record mode for PIX240 so this is is just a little step further...
I also think the EPIC should be powerful enough to record PRORES directly to SSDs and as it can record 5K HDRx at limited REDcode, maybe it could also record PRORES + RAW (non HDRx) at the same time !!

Can anyone who knows more about the Epic technical end chime in about why it can't record to ProRes? I'm a fan of RAW, but as many others have already stated, some clients have needs that are outside of that. It would just make me feel better if I knew of a single reason why the Epic firmware shouldn't include a feature to record to ProRes? There may be a very good technical hardware reason.

Id like on board Prores 4.4.4 and 4.2.2 too but we do prefer RAW for our own work. Whats the issue with using a KiPro on the back of Epic ? I know our reasons but whats every one else's view ?

If it was available I would buy one...count me in

I'd buy 2 of each for my 2 Epics if they were available. Would be ideal for so many different types of work!

A "Mini" with 2 channels audio, 1 return, 1 EVF/LCD port. Perfect! This would live on my cameras 99% of the time. Those audio channels should be labeled 1/3 and 2/4- selectable within the brain.

The on-board 4k/2k ProRes Module/DNxHD (lets ask for both) recording to RED SSD would be a dream. The recorder solves so many issues that clients needs/wants. Recording RAW is obvious, but having a second source for those clients that need either a fast turn-around or are setup post agnostic, ProRes/DNxHD fills the bill. All in a tight package like this- easily a home run. External recorders have there place, but nothing would compete with a product like this.

This is EXACTLY what I need right now!! I've got my fingers crossed that Jared/Jim are listening...

Great post Mark- way to kickstart an idea. (Nice photoshop work to)

RED, pretty please?

Mark are up for a rebellion :) very effective man.

I vote for both of them. I would buy them if they see the light.

I dont think I would ever record just to proRes and not have the RAW files in my back pocket. For me that would be like shooting only Jpg on a photoshoot. My Samurai setup is the ideal setup for me at the moment, but a mini recorder would be nice. RAW + Prores.

I think the RED team forget about the masses that purchase the EPIC for multiple usages, instead I think the RED team focus to much on just keeping the movie boys happy. It's great PR cudos for sure, but those guys don't buy EPICs, they just rent them. 90% of us that actually purchase equipmant and use it daily shouldn't for everything but movies cannot be ignored when screaming out for compact performance instead of growing the camera into large proportions.

Since I posted this thread, the emails Ive been getting have been coming in thick and fast supporting both these ideas.

One day guys... It's going to come, I can feel it, (and it may not come from RED) But we must keep up the posts... :)

I'm eagerly awaiting a plus one module, but this modules "you" cam up with is much better, I'm down with the "Mini Pro I/O".

I think it would be nice if the ProRes module could be configured for either ProRes or DNxHD.

Have to have this pro mini I/O doesn't matter if it comes from Red or the 3rd party suppliers.

Mark I'm totally with you on this as well. The market wants it. RED could kill all haters that spread FUD in the industry in a second if they would enable the Epic to record Prores .

You could choose the format when needed.
Check out the Black Magic Camera. You can choose between different formats from Prores to Avid DNxHD. If this little box can do it, why can't the Epic?

Personally, I stay with RAW. But there are customers that want a fast turnaround and don't know about RAW. That's why you see so much bad Epic footage because they fuck it up in post.

I know it's not Jim's Vision. But maybe RED is still 2 years to early with the full RAW workflow. Maybe give them what they need now and enlighten them a bit later.
Or give them a free copy of Premiere Pro 6 then they will understand in a second. Who knows.

Just my 2 cents.

Tim

Great idea! I love shooting RAW but there are many jobs, rightly so, prefer not to have to add the post steps for working with RAW. When quick turnaround is a big deal. Being able to choose formats would be huge.

Agreed, prores without module, yes please!
