  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

PRO IO MINI - WHO WANTS IT - VOTE HERE !

Ah shit I just bought the Pro IO just because of audio. Do you think anyone will buy it from me, if this piece comes out? :)
The Mini I/O would compliment the full sized Pro I/O rather than compete with it, adding two more XLRs to make a total of four XLRs. And the full sized module adds other features. So if you didn't want it, I'm sure someone would be interested in buying it from you.

I would love this. We're holding back on purchasing an EVF until the +1 monitor module comes out as we generally don't do in camera sound anyway and the other features on the Pro I/O are something that make more sense as a rental for our purposes.

The more I think about adding a ProRes and DNxHD module would really give Sony, Canon and Panasonic a run for their money in the Broadcast and
quick turnaround market. I feel adding Pro Res alone would be a mistake, including DNxHD covers all your bases.

Now that I've ditched FCP, Prores is irrelevant to me. DNxHD is a must. Given Dragon's coming out, I also assume RED is working on one of their own that can act as a replacement for these, and which all the editing systems (or atleast AVID) will include natively sooner rather than later.

Not to derail the thread and bring it back to topic - yes, I'd be totally into a pro-miniio and proxy module combo, but it looks like this may not happen since the focus seems to be on the high end modules for now atleast. :(

It's too bad that this very important thread has metastasized, with 70% of the people supporting Toia's brilliant "Pro IO mini" proposal, and 30% of the people arguing for a prores module as well / instead / built in.

Guys... they are separate ideas... and I believe they should remains as separate modules, both essential, but serving different purposes.

The crux of Toia's proposal (as I see it) is to come up with the smallest possible I/O module that will effectively create the perfect, field camera for light weight, run & gun shoots. Everyone knows that we can build up for studio. Also everyone wants a prores module. Noone in arguing against that. But keep them separate!

I just hope that someone at RED has seen this thread, and I also hope Toia's core message is not lost.

End rant. :)

Absolutely agree Alex. The point of the mini I/O is to combine a module adapter and XLRs and an additional EVF/LCD input (on top) to create, in my view, a complete, but compact pro camera. This addition would be small enough as to be hardly noticeable in most situations and could be left on permanently. But what it would do is get rid of the need for third part XLR adapters hanging off your rig and plugged into the 1/8" sockets on the front which are noise-prone since they can rotate. It would enable us to have both EVF and LCD at the same time, AND... the camera would no longer need to have an adapter added to add modules (since it IS an adapter). Quick release modules would go straight on the back.

If you don't need XLRs for a super lightweight rig, you can remove the mini I/O. Makes the concept of the adapter a positive boon to the whole modular design concept. For those that want a ProRes or DNxHD module, that should be separate. Not everyone wants that. But I think just about everyone could use the mini I/O. If other features are added to it, then it starts to bulk up and move away from the whole original concept. Let's keep this requested unit simple so it can become part of everyone's kit.

Need some additional SDI-outs if it hasn't been mentioned. For feature work having multi SDI out is a must AND being able to re-route menus, preview, overlay and so forth is golden. Typically a DP wants the RAW (with option to toggle easily), AC wants quick access to Menus, Director/Village feed needs to be clean or preview, Dolly guys want just a clean feed (or overlay for guides), and your on board record needs to be clean. If the Mini IO could have at least 1 additional SDI out we'd be set. 2 preferred.

Ned,
I dont like the RED LCD, so i only use the EVF.
To control camera i only use REDMOTE.
So with my setup i have EVF in Lemo, on board SMALL LCD HMDI & i have the HDSI BNC output for video village.......all sorted.......and two Audio XLR's.......
cheers
paul

I hear you. Despite some design shortcomings of the RED LCD (it's yoke is a joke, wish it just had 1/4 20's all around), it's still for my AC's or myself, the quickest way to navigate the settings. We usually set up the bomb on a W - ooden C - am -er - a EVF mount, Red LCD on top plate and Small HD that the AC uses for focus on a noga arm. Two problems: we still have to swap lemo's btw EVF/RED LCD and loop through the small HD to client monitor. Innocinema solves none of these issues. A mini I/O would solve alot of these issues without the size penalty of the current.

The more I ponder this, I'd like to see a bare bones even smaller mini I/O without the XLR's. Most the shows that most commercial / feature DP's shoot use double system, so XLR isn't as critical as we only use it for reference sound or often, not at all.

My ideal ultra mini would have: (2) xtra lemo EVF's (so you can use the 7" RED LCD, 5" RED LCD and the Bomb simultaneously), (2) SDI' outs; and (2) 12 volt Lemos. With 3 SDI's altogether you now have one for onboard AC monitor, client and playback.

Count me in too! I think the bare bones approach would be better for run and gun applications in sports and such!

For the love of all that's holy, give us a second EVF output. I am so incredibly weary of the incredulous look that comes over people's faces when I tell them they can't use both EVF and LCD at the same time.

Then they see the image and forget. But I remember. I remember...

Let's add a 5v powered usb port to it also, always nice to have for example powering the paralinx or a ledlight for nighshoots :)

Mark I'm totally with you on this as well. The market wants it. RED could kill all haters that spread FUD in the industry in a second if they would enable the Epic to record Prores .
You heard me, I said enable and nothing about a module. I'm almost certain that the Epic could shoot right to Prores onboard. This should be a software upgrade and nothing else.
You could choose the format when needed.
Check out the Black Magic Camera. You can choose between different formats from Prores to Avid DNxHD. If this little box can do it, why can't the Epic?

Personally, I stay with RAW. But there are customers that want a fast turnaround and don't know about RAW. That's why you see so much bad Epic footage because they fuck it up in post.

I know it's not Jim's Vision. But maybe RED is still 2 years to early with the full RAW workflow. Maybe give them what they need now and enlighten them a bit later.
Or give them a free copy of Premiere Pro 6 then they will understand in a second. Who knows.

Just my 2 cents.

Tim
